Overzealous?

I'm within 30 days of my first race (run, swim, run) and after doing some training on the actual course (1k ocean swim parallel to the beach) I fear I might have been Overzealous in my swim ability. So with no intent of not finishing (or dropping out) any advice on less than 30 days to practice an open water swim, on how to do a 1k without looking like I am not a good swimmer.(also Im quitting smoking so I know that will help)

Re: Overzealous?

how bad was it?

the more practice you get the easier it will become. also if possible see if you can have a knowledgeable swimmer/coach/lifeguard watch you swim and see if they can help improve your form. form is key in swimming and the better the form the more efficient you are and less energy you waste on the swim so you can trash the bike and run.

did you do the swim in your wetsuit or did you not get it yet?

Re: Overzealous?

Joe has said some good points. Since you are so close to your race I would have some look at your form and technique a little bit and make minor changes. Any major changes can take over 3 to 4 weeks for you to realize/incorporate into your stroke. I think the best thing you can do is to increase your cardio in the water by swimming at least 3 times a week (twice in the ocean if you can) Bring a faster swimming friend and swim the course with them. Trying drafting them and all, so you get as best a race scenario as possible. This will make you feel very comfortable in the water and on the course to have a great race.

Good luck
