Re: 20 MINUTE 5k thread - 2008

Hi Michigan, sorry to hear your possible slight stress fracture and wish you very fast recovery and be able to run an awesome time this weekend.

Timing is everything. This is really true. For my last Sun's track race, if it is held even just a day later, I would have had very mild temperature in the high 60's/low 70's in the afternnon.

But if it were held a day earlier, I would have had 98F weather, so I guess I shouldn't be complaining too much. As a morning runner in the the 50F range, 85F+ was really tough for me.

My next race will be end of Jul. I am planning to run about 63 miles this week, breaking 61 I set a few weeks ago. See how high mileage will do for me.

Re: 20 MINUTE 5k thread - 2008
Kudzurunner, of course you're right about the possibility of a short course if it is uncertified. The same thing went through my head, but sometimes someone just ends up having a major breakthrough after many failed attempts. The track is always ones best bet for accuracy, and there is no short course prevention factor to deal with to boot, but it's tough to find a suitable track race. BTW, you sound like a deep thinking guy. I always enjoy your posts.

Michigan, I doubt that you have a stress fracture, but of course I have no way of knowing. The fact that you have drastically upped your training could make you vulnerable, but there are many less serious injuries that are more likely. What are your symptoms? Whenever I think I might have a stress fracture, I always reason that in running for nearly 30 years, since I haven't had one yet, I'm probably not prone to them. That logic may be flawed, but it has worked OK to date. I like your strategy for your upcoming race, to latch onto someone who runs the kind of pace and time you are attempting. As I've noted, similar tactics have worked well for me in the past. I think you will break through in a big way. A good part of being able to hang on through a potentially painful last mile is having a burning desire to accomplish your goal, and you certainly have that. Hope the weather cooperates. Good luck to you!

I am pumped to put in a solid summer of training to break 20 and compete well in xc races in the fall. I might run a local 5K in mid-July, or a nearby summer series cross country race or two over the summer, but my first "real" race will be a 5K on the day before Labor Day. Last year I ran 20:27, so I'm going to do everything I can over the next two months to prepare myself for a sub-20 at that event. After that, it will be a mix of road and cross country 5-10K races through
the fall, with a possible trip to Spokane for XC Club Nationals in early December.

Re: 20 MINUTE 5k thread - 2008
Good luck tomorrow Michigan. That's some nice mileage you've been racking up. I think sticking with the guy that ran 19:35 is a good idea. Just make sure he doesn't start having a bad day. Last couple races I 'discovered' hanging onto people and it made it much easier to just relax, loosen up, and run without worrying (too much) about pace. My problem was that after mile one and mile two, either those people took off, or slowed way down. Miles two and three just check yourself and make sure you're still running what pace you think you should be. And if that guy does start leaving you, just make sure you keep him in sight and can run to where he is in exactly 24 seconds for a 19:59. :) Good luck man!

Re: 20 MINUTE 5k thread - 2008

MichiganFlyer, I'm honored to be the first to congratulate you. Nice going! You must feel like you're walking on air, after that big breakthrough following all those near-misses. What a great feeling to know you're going to do it while you're still running the race. Having occasionally experienced that same thing, I know how exhilirating it feels. Were you able to savor the last few minutes of the race, thinking about all the hard work you've done to get there? I deliberately avoided scrolling down to the end of your post, enjoying the suspense of your race report. Glad to see you get tough and go out at a quick, but controlled pace. Nice move sensing that your pacemaker was slowing up, and deciding to go by him. As I've written, I had a feeling that you would have a better shot of getting under 20 if you tried to blast a fast time, rather than trying to sneak under by a few seconds. Enjoy your triumph, and don't forget to celebrate later!

Congratulations Michigan, I think every one new you were capable of running a sub 20. The question was how far under. I figured with your training and previous results that you had a 19:30 in you. You have graduated from your own thread. Congrats.

Re: 20 MINUTE 5k thread - 2008

Cool Video. You look like a runner where as I look more like your brother inlaw. Tell your brother inlaw that about 18 months ago I could run only 29 minutes. After losing 60 lbs I ran a 20:39. I have decided to stop concentrating on getting below 20:00 and putting more effort in losing weight. I would like to lose around 20 more lbs before fall. My goal is to lose 30 more total.

Again Congrats on your victory.

Nice video! Good to see you come through with so much time to spare. You looked pretty reserved at the finish, considering how happy you were. I probably would have been jumping up and down, pumping my fists. Hey, at least you didn't do that Alan Webb war whoop thing. Looks like it was a huge race. Any trouble getting a good place at the start? Does this mean you're off the thread, or will you stick around to tell us of your future adventures?

Michigan -

Congratulation on breaking your 20 min. goal!

I have not posted for a while but do check in almost daily to read everybodies post. I love you dedication and focus and as mentioned by others it was only a matter of time before you met your goal. Looking at your video on Youtube I would agree you look like you had more in the tank and what I would give to have your runners build. Being 44 and 5'7" @ 175lbs I am far from looking like a runner.

Now that you have broken the mental barrier I would expect you to have a nice string of races in the 19:20-19:50 range as you gear up for a sub 19 min. 5K. It sure looks like that is very achievable with your milage if you added a little more speed work along with the aquired taste for that "Painfull" 3rd. mile it should be in reach. I can tell by your dedication that it is only time. Keep up the work and again congradulation!!

Re: 20 MINUTE 5k thread - 2008

Great job Michigan!! Sorry for the late congratulations, but that's a nice chunk off your pr. Way to go man.

Well, I'm back up to 4-5 days a week, 4 to 5 miles per run. No hip/leg pain in at least 3 weeks I think. Part of this I've moved to more of a mid/forefoot stirke and I've been doing some barefoot running on the grass and I that's what helped me transition back into running. Got a little bruise or something under the knuckle of my index toe so I've been mostly running on grass with my trainers because the concrete makes it hurt a little after a few miles. Figure it'll work itself out. Got some vibram five fingers to do some running in for my birthday as well. Anyway, it's coming along and I just need time to get used to it. (I'm used to it...feels natural...my feet need a little more convincing ;) Anyway, yesterday was my 40th, so I'm now officially in the master's division. woot :)

Re: 20 MINUTE 5k thread - 2008

Angrek, good to hear that you're running mostly pain-free again. If you're interested in developing more of a mid-foot strike, and otherwise improving your running form, check out Chi Running by Danny Dreyer. He has a website you can go to for additional info: www.Chirunning.com. Do you hope to be racing again sometime soon?

MichiganFlyer, what's next for you? I see that you have been easing back on your running following your breakthrough, which is probably a good idea. Biking is a nice diversion, but as Tinman pointed out, it's far different from running.

I've been gradually upping my mileage, while fighting off a bit of minor (I hope) knee pain. Had some acupuncture a couple of days ago, and I think it's going to be OK. I'm hoping to really hammer away this summer so I can make another sub-20 attempt in the fall.

Hope everyone is having a good summer.
