Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?

Hi Everyone,

Just found this thread and after reading several posts thought it would be great to join in! I'm currently training for my first half-marathon too...the Rock and Roll in San Antonio in November. I was excited to see others training for it also. I just started running back in March (very slowly getting back in shape) and just decided last week to set a goal of doing a marathon at age 40. Thought it might be smarter to train for the half first and posssibly go for the full in Austin early next year. I've got four kiddos and now that my youngest (twins) are 4, I'm finally feeling like I can get out and do something for ME!! I agree with everyone that proper shoes can make all the difference. I got my first pair in March and suffered some from minor aches and recently...painful shin splints. Felt like I couldn't run another day with them and got fitted for a second pair and was able to run the very next night pain free. Looking forward to the journey with all of you and hoping to reach my goal!!

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?
I also am new to running. I'm "training" for my first 1/2 marathon -- it's a fund-raising event in Disneyland called Run for our Sons on August 31. We are running to help raise money for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. My little 7-year-old neighbor -- the sweetest little boy you'll ever meet -- has Duchenne and could be in a wheel chair in as soon as his early teens. :-( Anyway, I'm 49 going on 99, haven't run since my early 20's and am extremely out of shape. I am determined to finish this race on time -- which is in 3 1/2 hours for it to "count" without being picked up by Minnie Mouse (how embarrassing!). I WALKED my farthest in 1 hour which was only 4 miles. That was on a path with extreme hills -- I live in Colorado -- so I think I'm going to start training on a treadmill. Any suggestions for this old workhorse??

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?
OK, went on my first 5 mile today. My legs are like rubber. Of all the problems that I thought I could have (strains, sprains and pulls), I would have never guessed I would have brush-burned nipples. lol I usually wear a loose training shirt and I guess with my manly pecks, I just rubbed them way too much. Who'd a thought? I guess I'll have to wear a tight t-shirt under my training shirt, it'll probably be soaked by time my run is over. This week I have an easy 2 on Mon, a tempo 5 on Weds, and a long 6 on Sat. I'm following a Runner's World Smart Coach training schedule for a half, the only problem is that there is no half when the training is over (sept). lol I'll probably pick up marathon training from there. It's good to have the time, no pressure. Did any of you hear about the 4 to 1, carb to protein, ratio for a recovery drink? They say you have to get to within a half hour of running and you can pick it up in Boost or Accelerade.

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?

Hey guys. I ran a 5K yesterday. My second race ever and a PR of 39:03. Of course that was my official time. My friend was on the sidelines and started timing me when I actually crossed the starting line and I finished something closer to 37 min. Right at the end, just beyond where I could actually see the finish, my shoe lace came untied and I had to bend down and take care of it. When I stood up my kids were there cheering me on and that's when my friend yelled out to me, "36 minutes". I felt like a horse heading to the barn. My legs didn't burn anymore and I gave it everything I had when I sprinted in the last 300 yards. A very strong finish for me and I'm really proud of myself. Of course I didn't manage to run the entire time like I wanted to but I kept my walking at a fast pace and for no more than 30 seconds at a time. Overall it was fantastic and I'm looking forward to a good long 5 mile run on the treadmill tomorrow.

The smoke from all the fires has been so bad here and running outside is just brutal. I still can't get the same 'no walking' distance on the asphalt that I can get in the gym. A 5K on the treadmill is nothing. I barely even get the lactic burn but put me on the street and I feel like I'm going to die. UUGGHH!!

Ever try putting tape over them??? I have a friend whose husband was a Marine and would do that (ouch!) and it worked for him. Just a suggestion!

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?

A few hints:

  • Double knot your shoelaces, particularly in a race.

  • No cotton t-shirts - or cotton anything else - on your runs. Cotton chafes more and gets very heavy and clammy when wet.

  • BodyGlide, NipGuards, band-aids or vaseline on those areas that chafe. Band-aids take some experimentation to find one that stays on. Vaseline works but tends to stain shirts. BodyGlide can be found at most running stores and a lot of sporting goods stores. NipGuards may be a little harder to find but can be gotten online.

  • Milk makes a pretty good recovery drink too - skim, chocolate, carbs and protein.

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?

Friday I ran my first 10K! My time was 1:06:42 and I'm really pleased with that. My two previous 5K times were 35:31 and 34:12. I'm happy to see my pace doesn't change much with longer distances, since I am running a half marathon in 9 weeks.

My issue is this: I have not been training on a lot of hills, and Friday's 10K was VERY hilly. The steep downhills resulted in two purple toenails. They are both sore, one is very painful and will certainly fall off, as it's starting to pull away from the bed already.

Can I still run? I will stay off hills until it's better, but I really would like to continue with my training. I have found all sorts of info online about what to do (or not do) with black toenail, but nothing on how to train with the problem. Advice and ideas from anyone are certainly appreciated!

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?
I just walked 8 miles yesterday and felt fine. Should I continue to extend my fast walks or try running to see how far I can run?

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?
Jen, yes you can still run, unless the pain is enough to make you change your stride. Then you should take a couple days off until the pain subsides. Consider going up in shoe size (1/2 to a full size) to minimize the chance that this will happen again. You should have about a thumb-nail-width between your longest toe and the front of the shoe.

Try doing run/walk. Walk a little to warm up. Then alternate running and walking for a specifed time. For instance, you could run for 1 minute, then walk for 1 minute. Repeat. Start with a mile or two, then increase as you find comfortable. Over time, increase your running time, leaving the walking at 1 minute, until you feel ready to run with no walk breaks.

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?
Thank you, Len! My shoes are already a full size bigger than I usually wear. I think it's time to travel across the state to an actual running store to get fitted professionally, instead of from a general sporting goods store with the help of a teenager. ?:|

Thanks, Len. Hopefully this out-of-shape old-timer can get (and stay) in shape without breaking a hip. LOL

Re: New here...Anyone training for a half marathon?

Len,

Just curious, how long have you been running? I saw that you are the "occasional" marathoner. You seem to know a lot of things about running. So, here's a question for you. I am currently training for a 1/2 this October and have been running 20-23 miles per week (my long runs are up to 9 miles on Sundays). Here's the problem. Three weeks ago I slightly sprained my ankle so I only ran bare minimum (and then paid the price later-ugg). Then last week, after doing serious speedwork (where my body was actually shaking a bit at the end), I got very sick the next day and am still feeling a little off (this "illness" used to happen to me in the very beginning when I would up my mileage) so I haven't put in more than 12 miles or so these last 3 weeks and I feel like I'm dragging when I'm running.

Okay, so this is what I need to know (finally, right?), did I lose my base by not running as much these past three weeks? Should I continue my training where I left off (I'm using the runners world training guide)? Not sure. I'm thinking about going back 3 weeks in the training guide and starting again from there.

Anyway, hope this all makes sense!
