Need Help Reclaiming My Health

Hi everyone,

I stopped smoking 3 months ago after 18 years of smoking. Two months ago, I joined a gym and have been doing cardio/weight training 6 days a week. On the days that I can't go to the gym, I'd like to run and I've although I've tried it a few times, I'm not happy with my results.

For one thing, I feel like I'm coming down too heavy on my feet but I'm not sure how to adjust this. I also feel like I'm leaning forward too much even though I've tried to keep my posture straight. I've been able to run about 7 minutes before I need to stop and walk not because I'm tired but because my breathing is too quick. I'm obviously doing something wrong because I don't have this problem when I am doing any of the cardio workouts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First -- congratulations on your decision to get healthy. Way to go!!

For help with your running technique -- especially your perception that you're landing too heavily on your feet -- go to www.posetech.com and check our the Pose technique. Definitely light on the feet and especially good for beginning runners because they are not invested in "traditional" running technique, so it's easier to learn. You can run for a lifetime injury free with Pose.

Not to worry about running causing you more cardio stress than other things. The muscles used are different for various cardio training modalities, and depending on how you're using those muscles, and how efficiently you're moving, you can definitely have different results. My boggle is non-recumbent bikes. The way they work, they just whip my behind, no matter how well I can hit the recumbent bike, run, do real live biking, stairmaster, you name it. It's all in the leverage and muscle groups, so don't pay too much attention to it yet. Check out Pose, and keep up the good work!

I quit smoking 2 months ago (after 20+ years) but I started running a little last year so I have a jump on you. I went from treadmill walking for 30 mins to running 6 days a week, between 2 and 5 miles a day. Personally I'm still not happy with my stride and also need to watch how much I lean forward too. Are you doing treadmill or outside? I found it was easier to learn to run on the treadmill first. Try to build up to 30 minutes before making the move to outdoors. I just could not breathe outside with all the humidity and pollen etc. That's what worked for me anyway. The more I ran the more my form improved. I think it may just come naturally after a while. Unless you hire a trainer I think the best thing to do is run as much as you can, a little more each day, or how ever often your doing it. I'm still new at it but that's my advise.

I have a couple comments. Running is probably the hardest cardio workout you will do, so it is not so surprising that you find it hard. You could try a run/walk strategy until you build more endurance, for instance: run for 4 minutes, walk for 1 minute, run 4, walk 1, and repeat until you've finished the distance / time you want to run. Increase the "run" time by 1 minute every couple weeks, until you are able to run the entire time. Try not to worry too much about form or pace for the first couple months. I think you will find these things improve as you get used to running.

Lenz's Law is a special case of Le Chatelier's principle: Any change in status quo prompts an opposing reaction in the responding system. I like that one better.
