Welcome! Boy can I relate to your mirror situation! I can tell you that in the brief 3 weeks I've been doing this I'm loving the look of my calves-hey exercise works!!!! What "plan" are you doing? How's it going?

Hi, I'm in the same boat. I've always struggled with weight, but I saw a picture of myself recently and realized I'd hit a new low.. Hopefully, this running thing, combined with a few changes in diet ,will help get my body back in check. : )

You've set your goal. Now just take all the great advice and go for it. You can do it. Believe it. I was "new to all of this" only 5 short years ago. It's fun. I love it. I live to do it.

Re: new to all of this
Welcome and good luck with your training. The best advice I can give is to listen to all of the good advice on this forum especially the ones about not adding too much at one time. It was only about 3 months ago that I started training and have taken it easy the whole way. Now I'm up to running 3 miles a couple of times a week. Just keep your own comfortable pace and stick to the 10% rule that Len is always talking about and you'll come along fine.

Mellydo wrote:10% rule? I guess i missed that part, can you tell me where to find that? i've only started this week so i've got a lot to learn.

The general rule is to limit your weekly mileage increases to 10%. For instance, if you do 20 miles this week, do no more than 22 next week. Of course, in the early stages of your running program this can be difficult or impossible to follow. So if you did 8 this week, next week you could do 9 or maybe 10, but slow down a little while you're at it.

Re: new to all of this

I started running last year, not very serious, I topped out at 4 miles a couple times a week but also went to the gym. Then I got super serious this May and now run 6 days over 20 miles a week. Here's insentive, this time last year to now: I went from an extra large to a small. I can shop in any store for clothes and not wonder if they'll have my size, or think other people are wondering what I'm doing there instead of the fat lady shop. For the first time in my life I have leg muscles. Also sometimes I have to remember to eat more because I'm burning off too many calories. So yes running has been berry berry good to me. I'm sure you will find it so as well. Good luck and keep going!!

Re: new to all of this

Dang Urb! I wish I could see some results like that. I guess I need to actually start increasing my mileage and stop being a slacker. I haven't been completely slacking though. I did start doing regular 3 milers last week but this week I'm moving so it's going to be hard to actually get any running done.

Well moving is a pretty good work out right there. Just to be clear to get to this point I also hit the gym pretty hard too. I think I had/having a mid life crisis. I'm just glad it didn't manifest in buying a new sports car instead.

I belonged to a gym for years before I figured out you had to go to it too. :^0 Sometimes the times just right to make a change, don't loose the drive to do it and you'll win the battle. I'm very happy to have helped motivate you. And that means more to me than you know!
