Critical Mass Cyclist Assaulted by NYPD

I just read an interesting article in the New York Times regarding the investigation against an NYPD police officer in the Critical Mass YouTube video shown below.
The YouTube video below shows the officer quickly move towards the approaching biker and tackle him to the ground on Broadway:
Crazy, right? Does anyone have any information about what happened or a reaction to the video? Does anyone know more about the Critical Mass bike rides?
Yikes! That's interesting. The cop definitely took the guy out and I'm sure it was for a reason or at least I hope it was. I would think the cop saw the guy fitting a description coming and took him out. That would be my hope at least.
This article says the cop got stripped of his gun and badge, and placed on desk duty because of the attack. The cop tried to defend himself saying the bikers tried to run him down--which is totally ludicrous when you watch the video. It is good this was caught on tape or the cop may have gotten away with it!
RyanActive found the police officers testimony on The Smoking Gun: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2008/0729081bike1.html
I can't believe the rookie officer claimed he was run over and knocked to the ground. It seems pretty clear to me that it was the other way around as he knocked the biker to the ground.
