training through pain?

I am 43 years old and training for my first sprint triathlon.  I switched to the triathlon because I have had a nagging hip issue with my left hip for several years.  It is doing tons better, but while going for physical therapy it was suggested to first train for a triathlon to build my hip up before trying to focus on training on a 10k or half marathon.  I am in my 6 th week of training for the sprint and now my right hip is starting to hurt.   I did a deep tissue massage this week and it helped a little but not completely.  I stretch before and after and on my off day I do a yoga routine.  My question is.... do I take the running out of my training for now or train through the pain?  On a scale from 1-10 I would rank it as a level 3.  With my other hip I pushed through the pain and ended up paying for it, but yet I know that some times you need to build these muscles and you do need to push through it.  One more tidbit of info... I only run on trails to minimize the impact.  Oh yeah and one more thing... I am about 10-15 lbs over weight.  I have lost 20 lbs, but am still working on dropping some more, so I'm not sure if that is contributing to it.    Any suggestions you can give would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks - Kym

Re: training through pain?

I experienced similar pain in my right hip soon after joining a local running club.  My orthopaedic doctor diagnosed me with "runner's hip" (which no one in my running club had ever heard of).  Apparently this is a condition you develop by running on uneven surfaces like roads (that taper from the center line to the shoulder).  The solution was physical therapy that focused mainly on stretching.  I was given several stretching exercises that helped somewhat but only if performed every day.  Rest helps most, but if you are a runner, you know how difficult it is to not run.  I still have the pain, but it's more an annoyance now than anything.  Some stetching and ibuprofen get me thru.
