Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey everyone...

I did a light 5.5 or so miles today at a slow, easy pace.   I still felt sore in my calves when I started from my long run Saturday.  I didn't feel super strong today but I did the recovery run easily (and slowly) as I went at a 10mm pace.  I'm glad to say that my calves loosened up though during the run.  I plan on a shorter run Wednesday at a faster pace before doing  a long run again Friday morning.  I'm a big college football fan (Penn State) and I am heading up there Friday for the game on Saturday so I want to be sure to get my training in before I leave Friday afternoon.   I'll lift weights Tuesday and Thursday as well (I lifted yesterday too).

Congrats on your HM Rach.  I'm hoping to have the same positive experience as you did.  I think setting that goal is the key and focusing on it.  Well done.

16 Miles!  I am ultra impressed Wendy.  I have grown to appreciate and admire Marathoners more and more as I continue running.  Keep it up!

Thanks Joe.  I'll look at the map etc and see if I can figure it out.  Thanks for the advice too.

Thanks for the advice spicegeek.  I had actually planned a recovery week last week (i try to do one every 4-6 weeks) but I bagged it after Monday because I was so pumped up that I had finally decided to do a HM.  I'm paranoid that if I don't get myself ready for the distance of a HM I'll fail.  I definitely am motivated by  a fear of failure.  Would it be a bad move to continue training as I am until after the HM then scale it back for a week or so?  BTW my wife just shakes her head at my nickname  ;).

Keep up the great work everybody.  It certainly is tough as the miles increase but I think it will be a great accomplishment to get that 13.1 under our belts.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hello all!

I'm SO glad our prayers were answered...the storm is weakening!  Well, I know it will still hit some, and we're continuing to pray.

Congrats to all the other racers this weekend!  I'm VERY impressed!  I feel like I am brushing elbows with some of the most amazing runners!   Seriously, I'm very impressed with all the stamina and perseverence you all show...it's very encouraging to me and I'm sure others would agree!  also, thanks, all for so much encouragement...you guys ROCK!

I have a question (i know, i have too many probably!)...I used to be a sugar fiend...such a sweet tooth...now, after I have been training for the past six months seriously, I crave more salty foods than sweet...I still eat sweet, and enjoy it, but i don't crave it anymore...has anyone else had this phenomenon, or is it maybe just a palette change I've heard people go through? hmmm...

spicegeek, I've seen now that you LOVE to make pies...I LOVE to bake, esp. pies, and I love to make the crusts from scratch!  Any tips, or great recipes you'd want to share??

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey Misswendy, glad you and your family are good. We had a few bands come through that had some tornados in them but nothing happened with those. My brothers in Mobile said they're good.  The people above me had their family come over from Louisiana and they said they was on the road for 18 hours trying to get here. I felt sorry for them. they looked beat and worried.

Congrats to the racers, way to go!

Rach - misswendy is the real recipe queen - she posted this little gem last week

http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/recipes/dessert/tart_rusticpeach.html

which I modified slightly - I cut the raw pastry into 6 before cooling - the roll them into mini pies - I use lime juice not lemon and I put the almonds on top - They have been a total hit with the trainers at the gym - I had several kisses from the hot boys !! I made them with peach and stawberries last week - I just made another 4 batches peach , strawberries, raspberries and  blueberries - the all look great and smell awesome - If you make them as minit pies - take them off the trays and put them on a cooling rack as soon as the come out of the oven - the juice does leak out and if you leave them on the tray they are hard to move once the syrup cools and goes hard !!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

running rach - that's great news on your HM. Glad you made it under your goal. I'm also very glad I didn't walk any besides at the watering station. Congrats again and good luck in your Komen Race for the Cure.

spicegeek - thank you very much. See you've been getting kisses, nothing like a workout with bonuses.

Joescoolagain - thank you and I definately will. I think it'll be a big mental plus to Know I have water when I need or might not need it. Live and learn. Good luck on your runs.

marflair - thank you and glad to know I'm not the only one that didn't run with one when I probably should've.

teabag259 - Welcome and good luck on your HM on Oct 4. 2 hour goal I see, I hit 2.03.07 and me not training properly was actually happy with that. Not sure if you have, but buy a water belt and you'll be fine. I tapered off too much I think because of vacation and stuff right before the event. Btw I wasn't gonna say anything about your name, lol. I wondered.

misswendy - thank you. also if I missed someone that raced over the weekend congrats to you as well. I almost missed all of last weeks post. Sorry.

runjr - I think I saw that you coached some of your people you know, congrats on that.

chamblin - great job on your 10.

Anyone in the storms path I hope all goes well to you and yours. I think last report I saw things might be okay, but I'm not there so wishes with you. Sorry if I missed anybody, I'm still trying to catch up. Take care all and thanks again. Hey, I got a medal woohoo.. I was happy to just get water and a cold towel. The little things in life. I just found an email and I have another HM (my first HM I thought) 10/18. I will have water and we'll see what happens. Everyone have a great night.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hi all.  glad to hear all are safe from the storm.

rach - great race too bad we didn't get to meet at the race.  I ran with DD and DW.

teabag - I would go to runners world and download a plan and follow the last week of taper. Save your energy the last week, just use the runs to stay loose.

cara - good run and a solid push at the end.  Good luck with the broadband. No need to be nervous you are a runner.   I can honestly say you can complete your HM just decide on a plan.  Some days you will be better than others and you will learn from every race experience.  When the weather gets colder you can always paint.

reeb - great race. You got to enjoy the experience which is the best part.

spicegeek - take it easy on the day after the long run.

joe - good run.  Your cowboys are the team to beat in the NFC.

mary - good to hear from you. This summer went by fast. Hope to hear your schedule allows more running.

misswendy - great to hear you are safe.  Thanks for the whooooo from our race over the weekend.  Race report in last weeks thread.

take care all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hey everyone:

I'm glad to hear that everyone is safe and sound!  Great races and running all around it seems.

Though I had planned to take yesterday off and go to the gym, I ran and had quite an adventure.  It was a beautiful day and I couldn't get my head around going to the gym and exercising inside.

Off I ran on one of my usual 6 mile loops near my house.  Around mile 4 down by the beach what sounded like panting to my left along this super high fence line separating a million dollar home from the road.  I had my iPod on and wasn't completely sure that I heard correctly so I just picked up my pace slightly.

As I hit the end of the property line a gigantic dog came out from under the fence and proceeded to lunge at me.  For as big as he was, I can't believe he got through so fast.  He didn't bite me but he did manage to knock me on my #%#$ and scare the crap out of me.  I was so shocked/furious that I started yelling at the top of my lungs in the hopes that someone would retrieve their "sweet Barney".

Thankfully, a man and his wife saw the dog jump on me and stopped their car and he got out and grabbed the dog (who was not ferocious at all).  He managed to crab-walk the 100+ pound dog back to the owners who came out to see if I was okay after the man reported the incident to them.  I was so wigged out and frankly, ticked off that I ended up walking the two miles home with both a ripped pair of shorts and some pretty nice road rash on my leg.

I woke up this morning with a bruise the size of my head on my $%##$% and mood just as blue.  No running today.  Instead I stayed safe at home and canned 8 quarts of tomato sauce from my garden with my spastic but loving beagle boy, Chili.

Maybe tomorrow I'll try the bike trail for quiet solo run.

Can anyone explain why for some reason I'm no longer receiving email notifications that this thread has been updated?  I'm not sure if I inadvertently turned something off...

Ack .. bad owners !! I hope they keep the dog under control in future !

There is an action box - depending on how the thread formats either on left or at the botton of the page - there should be a link to enable e-mail notifications .. but this thread gets updated a  lot .. you may want to leave it off and just check in once or twice a day !

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

chilidogbeagle- Oh my goodness!  That's HORRIBLE!!!  I've never heard of anyone "close" to me doing that before...I thought that was only in the movies!  That's so sad...I'm sorry!  I feel so bad for you!  Someone told me once that if you see a dog, stop and walk, because the running can cause them either to become dominating towards you or make them think you're ready to play...I've decided that's what I'll do if I see one.  So far the only dogs I've seen since I've started running are weiner dogs and little bichons or something...I've seen bigger ones but always on a leash...that's TOO BAD!  Hope the end of the week is better for you!

Spice - thanks for the info again!  Great add-ins/ons!   I'll have to try them soon!

runjr - are you running the Komen?  did you enjoy that course?

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

I've been charged by dogs 5-6 times while running.  One time one came out of nowhere and lunged right at my rear end trying to bite me.  It scared me half to death and I dodged it by jumping left....right into oncoming traffic on a bussy road.  Luckily the car saw what was happening and swerved around me or it would have smoked me.  Weird thing is that after lunging and biting at me once the dog ran back into its yard.

I've had dogs twice charg me at bite at my hands (which is especially bad for me as I have nerve issues in one hand resulting from a work injury)  and recently had 2 dogs at one time come at me...but luckily they stopped when I stopped and their owner  was right there.

I agree that the best thing to do is to stop running.  That way you can at least defend yourself if needed.  If you keep running the dog is going to chase and bite.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Good morning all! Busy place while I was offline yesterday!

Rach and Reeb, congratulations! Great job on your races! Those are awesome times!

Chuck, misswendy, Joe et alglad to hear no one was hit too badly by Gustav! misswendy, hope everything is okay when you get home, and your sil as well. Great job on your runs while you were awayis that how you keep your sanity when there are so many people around?

Cara, glad to hear your runs are going better, and great total for August! Good luck with your new Internet connection--we've missed you!

teabag, welcome, and good luck with your training! Sounds like it is going well.

spicegeek, sounds like you've been baking up a storm! I bought some peaches from a farm stand on Saturday but didn't get around to doing anything with them. I'm ready for apples. Hope you've recovered from your long run by now. And your regular gym is open today

Mary, welcome back! Great job on the push-ups! which I plan to start any day now... I am hoping the heatwave this week is summer's "last hurrah"--what do you think?

Reeb, what race are you doing 10/18? That's when mine is (Indianapolis).

Dariscary episode with the dog!! Glad you are okay. I get barked at quite often on my usual routesmostly by dogs in fenced yards, but I'll have to watch for any escapees! Hope the road rash & soreness are clearing up!

Joe, good luck on your 3! Any rain yet? We could use some up here.

runjr, how are you and your ladies doing? Still on that high I hope Heard anything from Kevin?

I did 5.5 yesterday, and was going to do my "speeder" 3 today, but didn't sleep well so put it off until tomorrow. A mistake in terms of the weather, it was only 58 today and is supposed to be 67 tomorrow. I know, compared to what you southerners run in, that is nothing

Have a good one all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey all,

Woke up this morning and nearly went right back to bed as it was tipping down with rain outside. Decided that i'd rather run that feel guilty all day so I got up, put on my wet weather gear and hit the road. I went for intervals to get through it quicker and ended up running 6 miles including 6*3 min intervals with 3 min recoveries - completed it in about 58 mins and the run felt great! The weather though was aweful - windy and driving rain the whole time - I was soaked when I got home! On weather - we've just had it announced that it was the cloudiest and wettest August on record! Not a record that i'm pleased we've broken

Reeb - congrats on completing your first half! How are you feeling after resting up?

Spicegeek - Looks like you need your EC for motivation! Hope you're all recovered from your 10 miler and enjoying the wind down to your race! I'm going to try baking those pies for definite!

Joe - good job on getting another 2 miler done... gym as well - you are a good boy! I registered for the HM in the WWFoR - it'll be good for me to up the miles again... although I did nearly wimp out and go for 10k! you'll all be kicking me out of here soon to start my own 10k trainers thread Hope the 3 goes well for you today!

Mary - Good job on that push up challenge! I really do keep meaning to try it but I never remember at the right time. When I get internet back at home i'll definitely do it! Looking forward to hearing more  on your September comeback! I slacked a little in August too

Misswendy - glad to hear you're safe! Great job on those 16 miles... you are truly doing amazingly with your training - are your times getting quicker too? I really want to get faster...

Teabag - Hope your calves are feeling better! You can definitely afford a cutback and still do the HM - i'd ran 12 miles before mine, but many others only run 10 before a half! Trust in the training

Rachel - I like salty foods and sweet foods... actually I crave pretty much any food I can get my hands on I wouldn't mind one of spicegeeks pies though

Chuck - Glad to hear the storm hasn't really affected you

Runjr - I know I can complete another HM, but i'd kind of feel like i'd failed if I didn't better my time... it's a mental block I need to work at... i'm a complete perfectionist unfortunately How are the family feeling after the HM?

Dari - Hope you're on the mend after your dog attack! I would have been quite frightened... actually DH and I were out running last week and a dog started chasing us - it was fine whenever we stopped, but didn't like us running... it took a while for the owner to get it away so that we could run again. Definitely taught me a lesson! The only thing I was glad of is that the dog was at least muzzled!

Macd - New internet ordered today so hopefully i'll be back up and running in a couple of weeks... Good job on the 5.5 yesterday. Enjoy your speedier run tomorrow!

About to leave for home now, so am signing off. I think it's a rest day for me tomorrow but will decide later!

Happy running all,

Cara x
