Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Back to school this week...I teach, and I am actually having a GREAT start to the year!  I'm really excited for this school year...my students seem to be pretty excited to learn French too!  So it's a win-win!

I'm planning on a 5 this evening...first time running since the HM Sat, but I walked 2.5 mi yesterday, and I felt GREAT!  so I'm gonna try it tonight.  Yesterday around here was an OVEN, but this morning it rained, and now it's a LOT cooler and perfect running weather!  I'm excited for that...the simple pleasures of life that excite us, huh?

runjr - the Komen is 9/28 (sunday, argh, I don't like sunday races) and it's in Milwaukee...i believe somewhere downtown near the historic ward???  Check out http://www.komenmilwaukee.org/ for all info...here's what I found about the course: "The starting line is in Henry W. Maier Festival Park (Summerfest grounds), and the Race will travel along Harbor Drive, onto Lincoln Memorial Drive, turn right on Lagoon Drive and end at Veterans Park on Milwaukee's beautiful lakefront. This new setup will provide more parking, easier staging of race participants, and best of all, no double back along the course."

on pies:  My ABSOLUTE favorite (and I DID make it this summer!) is STRAWBERRY-RHUBARB!!!!  Oh my gosh, I'm DROOLING just thinking about the name! ok, maybe I still have a LITTLE sweet-tooth! :-P

Jess- congrats on your first HM!  I did my first this past SAturday!  Wasnt it fun?  I ran the whole thing as well!  I even jogged through the water spots, except where there were young runners SOCIALIZING around the water! ARGH!  I wish somehow all runners would be able to be taught how to go through a water spot!

Have a great Wednesday, all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Rach, I have one piece of strawberry-rhubarb crunch (easier than a pie, and pretty tasty) left in the fridge. It's one of my faves too.

which reminded me, I meant to tell Dari I'd gladly trade a pie for basil pesto & tomato sauceif only I could figure out how to ship a pie! DD#2 would love thatapple is her fave and her bday is in a month.

and misswendy could send us some raspberry tarts...mmmm... It sounds like your new shoes & shorts will coordinate well. Wouldn't want you to be an uncoordinated runner lol.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

hour training with my main trainer today - but my #1 EC hung out with us causing trouble !

I`ll do an hour cardio later

I have realised I probarbly need to burn most of my work out clothing - even after washing it smells bad ...

Reeb - I would lay off the running this week - maybe do some light cross training - start back next week

runjr - safe travels !

Jess - Glad you made it over here ! welcome

teabag - if you are feeling low on energy take a rest day or 2 - pushing thro is risking injury, Yes you have the training to run the half - you`ll take 2 or 3 days off before your race so you`ll be fully rested - where as now you are building on fatigue from the previous few days training. do a shorter run this weekend - 6 miles - instead of 10 or 11 - you can make it a little faster if you like - make sure you take a complete day off to recover. Don`t forget eat well, sleep well and hydrate. I ran just fine last year on a long run max of 10 miles, and plan to do the same this year.

Cara - have fun with the pies !!

Chuck - Glad to hear you are doing well and you sound like you are getting back on form

Joe - wohoo 3 miles - excellent ! - I`m sort of following the Hal Higdon Novice program but I started a week early so I could taper a little more and get the 4 mile race in this weekend. I`m doing 3 runs a week - and instead of the option 4th run I`m doing an hour x training - I`m doing more cross training that the plan calls for but I was doing that anyway so I see no reason to cut back and I`m doinf moew weight training than they call for too - but again I was doing that anyway. This is the only week I really have felt a little tired but I did my long run this weekend at close to race pace so I`m not surprised.

macd Oh yes I have found the ways to my boys heart for SURE ! I have to wonder what the young girlies who wiggle their tushies at the trainers think when the boys all come over and make a fuss of the old sweaty woman on the treadmill !! But they are such nice guys - I know what it`s like to move away from home to a big city - Home baked treats make everyone feel good. I`m beginning to taper - no more long runs ! I dropped one cross training session Monday - I`ll only run 4 miles on Sat - but it is a race and I`ll see how I feel on Sunday - I may take a full rest day or just do an hour at the gym - but it will be a shorter workout. Mon Tues Weds will be a little weight training, a couple of short runs and maybe an hour biking. Thurs -> Sat - EAT and SLEEP !!!

Dari Is it a bad thing to fess up that Eye of the Tiger is on my ipod ?? .. but the I do box every Friday   ... and Pour some sugar on me ... love Def Leppard

misswendy you`re right i`ll try anything once ! the raspberry pies were a hit with everyone - but I still liked the blueberries best !

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

runjr - okay I'll do that thanks. congrats on the 6.1.

jc34360 - welcome and wow we ran the same event and both were our first, woohoo.. also sounds like we trained the same, I wanted the experience and kept hearing how fun they are and it was a lot of fun. Oh my 5 miles and you did the HM. I got up to 10 and it about killed me. Impressive. Good luck in November.

chamblin - oops I just read this now and earlier ran a little over 6 at a easy pace and felt pretty good actually. Yes, it's very amazing will power and I never quit on my runs, b/c I know the reward when I get done and didn't stop. Vacation is this Sun-Fri of next week. I'm gonna try and run atleast 2 or 3 days out there (sounds good in theory, but it might happen like Vegas, I start partying and don't run, lol).

chuck43 - great job on the 3 miles. That's cool you got to see one of your old students.

joescoolagain - Have fun at your niece's wedding and np, lol. When is the San Antonio Race?

macd019 - yeah I don't have much ryhme or reason for the ones I sign up for, but I'm going to start being more selective to coinside with my training. I usually just wing it, but I want to start improving and getting better and having fun at the same time. I'll still drink beer and eat fast food, but next year finish marathon sounds good as well, haha. You and I run at totally different times. That's good that you are able to run that early though.

misswendy - I'll pick some up later this week and try them, thanks for the info. I actually saw a guy when I was ending my run and he had on the shirt. I talked to him and he ran his first HM that event last year. He said only about 1k people and I thought it was bigger, but still local. I'll get a pic and since I saw the shirt up close it's not really that impressive, LOL.

spicegeek - okay no more running for me this week since 2 of you recommended that. I was just feeling the itch to run. I'll just play some ball and swim then. Good job on hour training.

Everyone have a great night.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hi everyone,

Wow Teabag/Chamblin/Joe/Macd019/Cara/MissWendy/Runningrach/Reeb29 - thanks for the kind words and fpr the welcome. I'm excited to part of the group!

Runningrach - congrats - I can't believe you ran the water stops and all! The part about people socializing made me crack up. So true though - at the last water stop I almost plowed down the people as they were all hudled around the energy drink and I was dying for some water at that point. Don't make me tell the gel story, it's even better. I swear I had more on my hands and face then in my mouth!

Joe - I went to VA just for the the run and some Labor Day Fun - I actually live in Jersey. Will check out the post on SA - thanks!

Reeb29 - congrats on your first! The end was defintely agonizing for me. I swear the last mile took me forever.....

Chamblin - thanks for the encouragement. I defintely want to train for SA. Ironically I realized if I had walked some in VA I probably could have done the actual running a little speedier but that's ok - was kind of afraid if I started walking I wouldn't want to start running again....

Teabag - glad to hear about your recovery plan. Having never run the HM EVER I'm not quite sure when to get back into it. I think I'm going to start again on Saturday which should have given me plenty of rest. Then start next week on a actual plan. Plus coming back to work this week has not worked well with getting back into it yet.

Speaking of which - are you all morning runners? Trying to figure out how to get into a good plan. I was running on the treadmill for awhile (I know - there are mixed views on this) and it was always ok but then recently before the HM, started running outside in the park and absolutely LOVED it. The time just seems to go by so much faster and it's much nicer to enjoy the weather, etc. (well at least last week since it had cooled down a bit). But I don't get home from work very early and with the Fall season just about here, I know soon it will be dark much earlier. Will I have to become a morning runner? Ugh!

Spickegeek - what's the pushup challenge? I'm curious -- and scared to ask!

Ciao for now !  - Jess

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Jess - I much, much, much, much prefer to run in the morning.  I was forced to run twice a week in the evening for the past year and I HATED it.  Now that my youngest starts preschool tomorrow (WooHoo!)  I can go back to doing all my runs in the AM.  I like getting it out of the way.

Have a great school year Rach.  Sounds like you have a good plan for getting back into it afetr your HM.

Man you are hardcore spicegeek.  Thanks for your advice.  I am going to follow it.  I need to listen to my body and not just beat myself up.

Everyone else..great job training.  keep up the good work.

I ran a very light 3 miles today.  In about 27 mins.  I still don't feel fully recovered and maybe should have just rested today.  But I did it easily.  I feel a bit better than I did though.  I'll run 6 miles  at a moderate pace on Friday and take off until Monday.  I should be good to go for next week then.

Have a great weekend and everyone root for Penn State!!

Hey everyone. Had a good run this morning, another 3 miles . Ran slow recovery run 29:37 for 3.06 miles. A little shin pain but I think it'll be fine. I'll try to do some shoutouts this evening. I have a full plate today so if I dont get ya today I'll see ya tomorrow.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

I have a 5 mile run planned later .. then I officially start to taper for the Chicago Half ! I feel oddly clam about it all being as I`m only about 10 days away !! I have started making my packing list so I don`t forget any key items like Gu or  my shoes !!

Reeb you`ll notice both runjr and I are very good at giving advice to take it easy and rarely actually take that advice ourselves !! I have a 10k race 6 days after my half !

Jess - no I am not a morning runner - I`m forced into running my long runs early because it`s so friggin hot here ! I can`t wait for fall when I can get up on a Sunday and if I don`t get out the door until 1pm I`ll still be fine ! I do my week day short runs on the treadmill but I have a great gym and lots of buddies who come over and talk to my when I running + eye candy to look at so the time passes pretty fast !! The push up challenge ... you did ask ... this site has a program that is supposed to get you up to 100 push ups http://www.hundredpushups.com/ - I am a big fan of strength training to go with running and pushups are a great all over upper body + core work out - the point is to get stronger - you can do push ups on your knees - on a bench - on a wall - counter top - whatever - or you can do the full out boy push ups - I had recently been training for a timed push up competition so my max was pretty good to start with so I thought I might as well build on that a see how far I get - I just started week 3 - and it is getting tough !!

teabag - hardcore ? .. thanks .. I`ll take that as a compliment ! lol

Chuck - take care of that shin !!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Good morning! Arrgh... another run postponed... anyone see a pattern here? This morning's excuse was thunderstorms when the alarm went off. I went back to sleep for an hour, then did 8mi on the exercise bike. Hopefully 4 tomorrow and 8 Sat. or my step-back week will have stepped back a whole lot further than I intended!

Joe, yes, I sweat at 71... it was 97% humidity. May you have a cooler 71 on Sat

Reeb, I guess a cool shirt is as good a reason as any to pick a race

Jess, I run in the a.m. to get it done and because there are too many distractions (like dinner!) when I get home from work. Also running on an empty stomach seems to suit me best. When winter arrives, though, I'm not sure what I'll do. I fear slipping on the ice in the dark. I did all last winter on the treadmill, but after starting outside this spring, I can't imagine going back to that.

teabag, you don't sound too broken up to have your youngest in preschool I wasn't either... could never relate to those moms who cried putting their kindergartners on the bus.

spicegeek, sounds like a good taper plan, except maybe for the race Sat... don't go TOO all out! I like the eat and sleep part!

Chuck, take care of those shins!

Have a good one all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Morning all,

Got up in the rain again this morning but luckily it eased off pretty quickly and wasn't that bad for the run. When I got home I was just making breakfast and it started raining really hard! Looks like I timed it just right!

Ran 5.6 miles - I was hoping this would be a tempo run and had planned 4 miles tempo starting at 9:40 pace and working down to 9:00 pace. I kind of knew from the first 100 yards that it was going to be a tough run so i'd just have to do what I could. After my mile warm up, I ended up running around 9:30 / 9:40 for 3 miles and then 1.6 miles cool down. This was really hard but I got through it! It seems that every time I have a rest day I struggle more the day after! Anyone else find this? I'm wondering whether I should add another day to my running and only take Sunday's off after my long runs?

Chuck - great job with that hilly 4 and then the 3.06... slow indeed - I can show you what 'slow' really is! Really cool on seeing that girl too and amazing how she has persevered and excelled dispite being disadvantaged from the start! I will stop complaining about my bad runs I promise!

Joe - good job on the 3 miles. Is it getting easier? If I only started running when it's dry i'd be lucky to run once a week at the moment!

Macd - good luck fitting in day time running! I'll try to send you our rain if you can send some sun this way Actually I think i'd just settle for a couple of dry weeks at the mo! We will allow you a postponed run for thunder!!! and at least you cross trained instead - I think i'd have gone back to bed and stayed there

Dari - LOL on the treadmill guy singing out loud! Get the Garmin... it's amazing! I am truly converted and could not be without it now!

Misswendy - Good job on that 10 miler - I guess that's just a medium length run for you now You back home yet?

Rachel - Glad the school year has started off well for you - what do you teach? Hope your first post HM run went well!

Spicegeek - how can #1EC hanging round ever be trouble Sounds like you're well prepared for that HM... you

Reeb - I love saying '6 miles' and 'felt easy' in the same sentance! going back 18 months when I couldn't get round the block I would have choked to death on my glass of water at such a thing Your vacation sounds lovely! There's a whole life time to run but we don't get that much time away so enjoy it...

Jess - I see you are in with the swing of the group already! You'll do well here I agree with the walking in a race and not being able to start again as sometimes that's how I feel. I do remember a really tough 10k I did where I let myself walk for a bit then was stop start for the remainder of the race... bad decision for me! I used to run after work, but I was getting home after 7, running eating 8:30 earliest and then straight to bed. It really interfered with my life so I now run mornings before work. Luckily I got a new job close to home so I run at about 6:30 but there are many true early birds here! You should try mornings as I am not really a morning person but i've learnt to love my morning runs (most of the time )

Teabag - I'm with you on mornings... but not too early of course Good job for getting the 3 miles in - hope your 6 is ok tomorrow!

Well - it's afternoon here now and I got another meeting!

Chat later

Cara

macd...i'd forgotten about the pesto too. i am making that tonight with whole wheat pasta and chicken. btw--uncoordinated is a word commonly associated with me, and not just for fashion! lol

spicegeek...hope your taper goes well. my running clothes are nasty. but hey, they take up a LOT of sweat! i've heard to add a little vinegar to the water, dont know if it works. glad to know you are in the 80s rock camp too!

reeb....haha on the shirt. i like the fruit punch beans the best.

jc....running has changed me into a morning person! i love it!

Socializing at the water table -- oh yes, it did happen!! There were four younger girls, teens, and they stopped to ge ttheir water, and grabbed a glass or two, and then waited for their friends to drink up, then I dont know what heppened, I ran right around it, I didn't want to actually stop...oh well...they were young, right?

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

Hey everyone:

6 grueling humid miles this morning.  I think I'll do evening runs on Thursdays after evening racing training on Wednesday nights from now on. My legs felt like I was wearing those ankle weights.  I think I popped another toenail today.  Time to pull out the red sharpie pen, again.

Jess:  Welcome! mornings runs for me, please.  I find that I have a really hard time gauging what to eat if I run in the evening and I'm generally less motivated to start at the end of the day.    You have a gel story?  I've only tried the wildberry gu once and I thought I knew what it would taste like until it was actually in my mouth and time to swallow, I couldn't - ughh.  Is there something out there that won't make me want to yak other than gu for energy replacement?

Rach:  You're a teacher?  No wonder you run LOL.  You receive the gold star for today.  Tough job.  I'm glad to hear they are being good to you.

Chuck43:  That's a great story about your old student. That's pretty telling about your impact on her life.  Very cool.  I met a man with the same name as my favorite teacher of all time this past weekend.  I told him and he asked me if I had ever told her.  Not likely - I was 13 y/o.  He suggested that I find her and tell her.  So, I actually called my english teacher from 30 year ago on Sunday.  She immediately remembered me and we had a great convo.  She told me I made her year.  Perhaps it's been a quiet year for her   Hope the shin discomfort lets up.

Spicegeek:  I think you're "hardcore", too.  I'm jealous of people with strong upper bodies.  The Chicago countdown begins...

Teabag:  3 miles is great... don't push yourself too much.  It's really hard to come back after letting your body get depleted.  I'm glad you're taking the weekend off.  Penn State?  Do I hear Alma Mater?

Joe:  okay, I won't complain (much) about this morning's temp anymore after hearing about 80's or 90's.  My run was a bit like running in a terrarium, though.

MacD:  I'm going to the post office right now to see about mailing pies.  I've haven't eaten yet since my run this AM and these food threads are making me hungry.

Reeb:  Have a great vacation - are you going somewhere fun? (you probably said and I missed it) - I like to run when I'm away - it makes eating to excess less destructive and eliminates major damage control when I get home and find things aren't fitting right after eating PIE every night.

MissWendy:  I actually love 80's rock, too.  I don't have much of it on my iPod - I'm not sure why.  Probably because I don't remember much from that period.  Definitely the decade that showed me that moderation was always going to be an issue for me.  Dead snakes?  Little ones I hope - I'm squeamish.

thanks again to everyone for all of your support.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 31st

5 miles .. done .. I am now officially tapering !!

Week 3 day 2 of the 100 push ups

27 19 19 15 35 ... total 115 .. bad *** !

Did some pull ups too

Joe 19 mpw / 9 LSD should do you fine for your half  - sounds like you are building back nice and slow too

Macd - the race is only 4 miles - so it shouldn`t be too bad - and it`s my 8th qualifier for the NYC Marathon next year - only 1 more race after that and I`m in !

Cara The EC is a little imp - he loves to cause trouble !! I struggle a little after rest days - I think my body starts to cry for more time off !!

misswendy - I`m going to try the vingar - if that fails .. really I need a fire ! - I was going to try some of the wetsuit cleaner I have too - it`s called sink the stink .. I`m thinking that may help the problem ! i`m a die hard 70`s - 80`s rocker ! I go and see Def Leppard live every year - I`m going to see The Who in Oct .. with my EC !

Dari - some runs are just there for the mental toughness !! try sports jelly beans if you don`t like GU - Me I` have no problem with GU ! The strong upper body was largely a result of a stress fracture - I was not allowed to do anything that invovled standing for about 3 months so I started doing a lot of upper body weights. Gave myself a goal of benching 3 sets 10 rep or 100 lbs - which I did - and passed last weekend I bench pressed 105. Once I got back on my feet my gym and a push up / pull up competition so I trained for that - and now I don`t really want to lose what I gained while I was laid up - so I switched to training with 2 people- the girl who I`ve always worked with who does a lot of movement and functional based work - and now I work with a guy also who is all about pure strength training so it`s a good mix. My weekly boxing session helps to. But one thing I have noticed my upper body doesn`t give out even on long runs I stay tall and upright
