Good evening all and welcome to the new peeps. I'm back from LA and almost back from miserable head cold. I got one run in but missed my 8 mile run while I was gone. The combination of too busy and sick made it impossible but I completed it tonight. 8.18 @ 10:14 pace. Pretty excited about it as my head cold is still lingering. Less than 5 miles to go and almost half way through my program. I suppose it speaks to my anal personality that it was really bugging me that I hadn't done it. Guess I can relax now. I have a 10k coming up next weekend. Will be my first and I hope a good chance to test where I am speed wise.

Everyone's mileage is getting so high. We might have to change this to the marathon trainers! Congrats to last weekends racers. Sounds like everyone did great.

Spicegeek - sounds like you are ready to rumble for yours. Good luck!

Happy running!

Hi All,

A quick post whilst I have time... probably my last until Monday unless my internet gets connected over the weekend!

I went out for an easy 6 today but my legs and cardio were shot... I took it super easy and managed 5.2 miles. I think trying to maintain some kind of tempo whilst not really being up to it yesterday was a bad idea! I'll see how I feel tomorrow for my long run - it's a tapered one anyway as I have a 10k next week so was only going to do 8 miles, but I might cut it to 6 if my legs don't improve dramastically. Even sitting at my desk my legs are feeling dead so i'm sure i've overdone it a bit :(

Misswendy - I'm going to leave out day 6 for a bit longer and see how I go... I'm kind of stuck around 30 - 35 miles a week at the moment... my body doesn't seem capable of pushing further right now so i'm going to consolidate that level for a while until after the WWFoR HM at least. Now - was your dead snake a real one this time ;) I had nothing exciting at all in my run - I prefer going out with DH as we go to more interesting places...

Rachel - maybe you should have barged through the centre of the girls at the drinking session shouting 'coming through'...

Dari - running a morning after an evening training session is tough as you don't really get enough time to recover. When I make it to my local club (hopefully in the next couple of weeks) I'm planning to take my mid week rest day the day after e.g. run Mon AM, Tues AM, Wed AM, Thurs PM (session), Fri OFF, Sat AM... If I go to a Wed / Tues session I will adjust my off day... if I want to go more than once a week my plan kind of falls apart though ;)

Spicegeek - enjoy your taper! Excellent on the push ups! I'm sorry to say i've still not tried it, but I will definitely... just as soon as I get my internet connection at home or enough time at work to look it up! I was wondering whether the body starts to relax after a rest day and it's just getting comfortable when you demand more from it again hence why it feels harder? Maybe I should try some cross training on my mid week rest day? Not sure what i'd do though as i'm not a member of a gym...

Gayle - Good job on getting those 8 miles in and a fab pace too! Glad to hear that you are feeling better again! I'm like you if I miss a run - particularly a long run I get completely paranoid and start beating myself up over it... better to just get it in really ;)

Well - lunch time so I gotta go... priorities and all that ;)

Chat later I hope
Cara x

Good morning all! Got 4.57 in this morning, which I was pleased to be able to do on a weekday. I had 2 hills on my planned route and seriously debated bagging them, but didn't. I hope I don't regret that when I try to run tomorrow ;) Very humid here and windy--we thought the aftermath of Gustav must have reached us last night.

Gayle, great job on your 8! Nice pace! I'm right there in the anal camp with you (that doesn't sound very good, does it?).

Cara, hope your legs are feeling better tomorrow! If not, rest 'em girl!

misswendy, your dinner sounds yummy! Think I am baking a bday cake for DH tomorrow. It's not until Wed. but we have some friends coming for dinner, and he seemed agreeable to having some help eating a cake. You uncoordinated?--I highly doubt it ;)

Dari, I've been trying luna moons on my longer runs (for lack of anything else available locally)... they're not bad though tend to get stuck in my teeth (like dots); can't really tell that they give me any energy boost either. They taste fine though ;)

spicegeek, good luck with your race tomorrow!

Anyone else racing this weekend? Good luck/good running to all.....

hi all back after a three day trip out of state. I did run 7.3 on Thursday and 6.1 today.

teabag - When I began increasing the miles I too was out of energy. Three things 1. pace 2. diet 3. sleep. Make sure your non-long run days are mixed days with the proper paces. Runners World has a pace schedule for each day. It sounds like my early trials and ran too fast too often. Make sure you slow the pace when you need to and you will have more energy. How is the diet? Are you getting the proper foods? Finally, are you getting enough seep and rest? You are doing fantastic.

chuck - love the story of running with your son. You never know someday he may run. Are you still planing a visit out there by him?

macd - DW just started her work year so she will be busy for a while. I will be traveling quite a bit the next few months and then it will calm down some. I am not looking forward to TM days. I will try to run outside throughout the winter again. I can't believe the snow is just a few months away. I see today another quality run. How are your daughters doing?

dari - lol on the songs your DS loaded on your ipod. My songs vary from Christian Rock to Classic Rock with some Country in there are well. I just work on the playlists to ensure when I am doing hills or really need a push that Barry Manilow doesn't play.... lol

misswendy - do you run with a boom box on your shoulder? lol. Or do you have one of those CD players, maybe 8-track tape or cassette? I have had them all. Long run tomorrow? Great running.

rach - DW does the same profession as you but not your subject. Thanks for the link for the Komen. Maybe I can pick up my DD from school and take her to the race to run.

spicegeek - food always works with us guys. You know every angle. With us guys, it is not difficult to figure us out.

reeb - how is the running going? Are you looking for another race? Are you feeling better?

jess - welcome and congrats on the HM. I run at night unless I am traveling. I usually take a full day off before I switch from morning to evening. If you like evenings you should get reflective gear and lights.

teabag - glad to hear you are taking it easier.

joe - low 70's? That is winter weather for you. Four miles tomorrow, good luck. It was in the 50's the last few mornings for my running.

cara - way to tough it out on the tempo run. I agree with you 100% on the day after a rest day. I took off Wednesday and Thursday's run was really tough. I see another run today and a race in the near future.

gayle - glad you had safe travels. Good lick with the test run.

I am caught up now. If I missed anyone I am sorry.

jc34360 - congrats to you as well. Yes, I agree the last 2 miles took forever I think. A lot of fun though. I run usually at 3:30 pm. I can't do the morning run thing.

chuck43 - good job on your run.

spicegeek - lol don't head to your own advice, that's funny. That's cool I just ran once this week and I'll do a small run tomorrow then it's on next week. Good luck on both of your races.

joescoolagain - Cool, good luck on Nov 16.

macd019 - yeah it doesn't take much for me to want to enter into a race. T shirt works.

chamblin - ty and glad you can run around the block and not choke on water, lol.

misswendy - one dead snake no dogs sounds like a good run. I'll pick up some fruit punch beans tomorrow for my trip. thanks for info.

running rach - yeah it was the same at my event, but I did stop and walk for 5 seconds or near there so I could drink my water. I heard people trying to run and drink and get choked, I've already been there and done that, no thanks, haha.

chilidogbeagle - good job on 6 grueling miles. thank you and I'm going to California, Anaheim area. lol pie damage control.

GLBryan - hey and great job on your run. Thank you it was fun.

runjr - congrats on your 7.3 and 6.1. I only ran once this week a 6 miler and gonna run I think maybe 10 or 11 tomorrow depends on if it storms really bad or not. Yes, I have trail race (3 part race series) on 10/11 and HM 10/18, 5k 10/25, 2nd series trail race 11/08, 5k 11/27, 3rd series trail race 12/13 and think I'll finish it off 5k 12/20 until the beginning of next year. I registered for a lot of these awhile back and just realized how many I'm doing, lol. Yes, I'm feeling great.

Everyone have a great night. Sorry if I missed someone I don't think I did.

Wow you guys have ben quiet today !! Had my usual Friday morning smackdown today - it was great boxing session - my punches are getting really tight - nice way to rest the legs a little !

Looks like I`m running in the rain tomorrow ,, yug !

GL Glad you are back - well done on getting that 8 miles in with a head cold ! Good luck with your 10K next weekend !

Cara maybe you should just take a rest day rather than trying to run - dead legs are not good !! There are all sorts of cross training you can do - get some very light weights and do sets of 30 - 50 curls, squat, shoulder press, lunges, bent over rows, reverse lunges, punches, side lunges - that will get your heart rate up !! you can do similar sets with resistance bands - just use light weight or resistance and go for fast high reps - biking or swimming would also work.

macd good run ! thanks for the good luck wishes

Joe Good luck with the 4 miles - yes I`m very excited about see The Who !

runjr you are right you boys are so easy !! nice runs !

Reeb - You are doing great !!

hey yall

17 this morning. it was a struggle at the end. not up to it today. oh well, theres always next week! 50 miles total for the week, a first for me. lotta stress this week, and it certainly affected my running.

chili...good luck with the sharpie.

spicegeek...good luck with the laundry. i'm just about to do some now! wow, ec and def lep. woooohoooo!

glbryan...way to run through the tough days

chamblin...haha, yes the dead snake was really a snake it is former life! good thinking on holding off the 6th day. i am doing wwfor hm too! i will be running 15 that day so i will just time the 13.1 and submit that.

macd...dinner was great and then last night i made grilled foccacia and we had that with the leftover pesto. yummo. what cake is dh getting? uncoordinated! ive laughed at myself many times for running off the road when there is no one there but me! great job on the hills! they will pay off!

joe...hope that 4 went well. you are well on your way to the zen run.

runjr...i will try the boom box next run. that should really pump me up. LOL. great job keeping the running while out of town. a run like the one i had today is discouraging, but later on it will pay off i'm sure. it reminds me to pay more attention to what i am eating and how much i am stressing. those things matter a lot.

reeb....my friend gave me a tip on water breaks in races: squeeze the cup almost shut on one corner and suck out the water/gatorade. less chance of spilling. of course, i was had to practice this technique ahead of time! haha good luck on the race

spice....way to punch it out girl. cant wait for the race report!

joe...extra sleep, cool temps, and neg split! wow its your day today!!!

love to all

hope no one is dealing with hanna.....

Brutal .. BRUTAL humid here in NY - it didn`t rain - I wish it had - I wouldn`t have been any wetter at the end but I`d have smelled better !! I rang the sweat out of my "dri-fit" shirt - finished in 40:47 - I was hoping to break 10mm pace for this race but as soon as I stepped outside this morning I canned that plan - I did run under 10 but stopping for water twice wiped out that ! I survived what can we say !!

hey everyone:

6 miles on treadmill at gym today. No fun and hard to get used to again after so much street running, but it's done. It's super humid here today - we are expecting one of Hannah's tantrums this afternoon and tonight - nothing major just wet & windy.

Spicegeek: can you say "scuba gear"? Great job today. Humidity is so much harder to handle for me than almost any other element outside.

Misswendy: 17 miles. I can only imagine. Wow. I hope stress isn't impacting your sleep. Get your DH to run your shoulders & neck - it tends to be where I wear mine.

Runjr: I'm going to heed your advice to Teabag re: pacing. I tend to run same pace everyday - I have a hard time switching it up. I'm feeling a little worn down (in general). Okay, my iPod has everything from hip-hop to pop to rock to alternative to motown & even stuff from 70's & 80's. I will admit to having three versions of one song on there that has earned me more scorn from DS than is probably fair - "Dancing in the Moonlight" by Harvest Moon. I can't explain it but it must remind me of some amazing time back in 1973 - when I was all of 10 years old and life was simple & fair.

Reeb: Good luck on 10 today. Have fun in CA.

Cara: I agree with Spicegeek on taking day off. Deadlegs, hmmmm. I had them on Thursday after run & Wednesday night's race training. It felt like ankle weights. Yesterday was my day off. Moderation is always an issue with me.

Gail: I can't believe you did 8 with a head cold. I lived on claritin here most of the summer because of seasonal allergies. It got me through it but it makes my skin tingly (is that a word?) with a pesky case of irritability thrown in. Thankfully for DH & DS, season is over.

Joe: I'm going to buy the garmin 305 - can't get the 405 because of the mac os X compatibility issue. I can't wait - I'll definitely have it by next month & HM on Oct 19th. This month's cash goes towards car purchase for cherubic offspring.

MacD: Great job on hills! We don't have many around here and I tend not to intentionally seek them out :)

take care, dari

Hey everyone!

Finally got back into it today after running HM last week. Also had a nice day off from work yesterday so it was really nice rest. Figured having never done those long miles before last week I could certainly use the rest! I think that was right b/c my legs still felt a little heavy - ugh. Is that normal after this long or was last week's mileage just a fluke?

Spicegeek - I have no idea how you ran in today's humidity. It was over 90% humidity here in the NY/NJ area - wanted to run outside but by the afternoon my decision was made for me! Did 3.5 on the treadmill and I don't know if I'm officially converted to outside running now or b/c I'm still tired from last week but it was a little bit of a struggle. Oh well still feel good that I did it.

Still trying to figure out this schedule thing though - most of you replied that you're morning runners although Runjr and Reeb I know you guys said you run at night and Spicegeek you mentioned that night is what you prefer. I swear I sound like the typical person making way too many excuses (ok I probably am) but mornings may be rough unless I'm going to start running at 5am - ugh - sorry all you morning runners - I dread the thought! And even that may not get me to work in time as I commute into the city each day so it takes a little while. Evenings are good but it's already getting darker early and I hate running in the road/traffic. I much prefer the park - unfortunately most by me close around dusk but I'm trying to see if there any nearby with lights or something which lets them stay open later. Oh well I'll figure something out just have to stay motivated! Spicegeek - I might do like you mentioned and just do my shorter week day runs on the treadmill if I have to. Macd I think I'm now spoiled from running outside and dread the thought of going back to the treadmill going forward. MIGHT try to do a morning this week and see how it goes. If there are no replies from me later this week it's because I ran into traffic while trying to wake up!

Chilidog - I think the gel I had at the VA HM was strawberry banana or something like that. It was very sweet but not terrible. But as I started to allude to my gel story in an earlier post, I ripped the package open and was tired and sweat so of course it didn't open all the way. So by the time I got the gel out I think I had more on my hands and face than in my mouth!

Ok well hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! - Jess

Dari - scuba grea is right !! ..I would have happily run on the treadmill today !!

Jess - Where are you ? I live in Manhattan ! so I was running in that 90% ( it was acually 95% according to the race stats ) humidity - I have no idea how I did it either - It was a qualifier for the Marathon next year - that leaves me one more race to do !! it was "only" 4 miles - I`m just glad I didn`t have to do my 10 mile long run today !!

Spicegeek I still say you're crazy! I'm in NJ just over the GW bridge though. I actually work in Manhattan. Like I said the humidity and later the rain made my decision for me and sent me right to the treadmill! Glad you did well though :8}
