571 currently in my box, 9 unread (from those damned medical students).... but I've deleted thousands.

My boss told me he gets upwards of 400 emails a day... he has to check daily when he's on vacation or the Internet explodes 

1284 right now, 72 unread.

Lotus Notes stats indicate that I receive/send (mostly receive) on average between 1700 and 2500 work-related emails a week, and I need to archive at least once, sometimes twice a day. I have a very bittersweet relationship with my Blackberry...

I archive almost everything (never know when you might need that paper-trail), but at the end of each year, I delete everything that dates back more than 2 years.

Overwhelmed by such numbers, superiors and staff get priority. I do have a few colleagues I watch out for, because they usually have important stuff. Everybody else? If it's that important, they'll track me down in person. Even if I'd spend just 60 seconds reading the other emails and writing back that I can't tackle their issue right now, I'd spend 3+ hours just doing that.

Fortunately, emails get automatically deleted after 2 months.

Only 41. But that's just the new, fresh incoming mail.

I'm sure I have many thousands in other mailbox folders.

I "file" all my messages after I've acted on them -- either into the trash, a customer folder, personal mail, receipts, etc. At the end of the day I go through whatever's left in my Inbox, and either take care of it (answer it, do a task) or put it on my list for tomorrow.

I have a spam folder that does a pretty thorough job of picking up the spam, and about once a day I give that a quick glance to be sure there's nothing there that ISN'T Spam, then I delete those messages.
