We recently published a story about four different schools that have homecoming traditions unlike any other: San Clemente (Calif.) High, Jordan High in Durham, N.C., Cupertino (Calif.) High and the University of Central Florida.
Surely, your school or a school you're familiar with has a weird homecoming tradition, or a great homecoming story you can share.
One I recall fondly was my senior year of high school, when we did the traditional vote to choose a king and queen. I was good friends with one of the guys on the homecoming committee, and just before the pep rally he came up to me and said, "You'll never believe it."
"What?"
"There was a tie for king."
"A tie?"
"Yep, a tie. We re-counted the votes seven times to make sure we weren't wrong. It was a tie."
I went to a decent-sized high school in suburban Kansas City. Both of the leading candidates received more than 100 votes. To have two candidates tie? What are the odds?
But it happened. The school had to scramble and find another crown before the assembly, and the rest of the student body learned in shock what I was tipped off about minutes earlier.
That night, the queen was announced at halftime of the football game (only one winner, thankfully). She then had the unique honor of being escorted by two kings, one on each side of her.
