It's not easy being apathetic...

Or maybe I just can't get my head out of the clouds. I need to write a persuasive speech on something controversial, and I am having trouble finding an issue that I can be concise about in 8 minutes, and that I give a fig about. Iraq is out because it's way too broad.

What ****** you guys off? Maybe something will appeal to me. I just can't think. I think part of it is because it's the end of the semester and I'm pretty frazzled.

The problem is also that I will be speaking to college students. Apathetic college students. At 8 in the morning. The only person in that room who cares is the teacher. Unfortunately, he is also responsible for my grade.
Maybe I'll just pick something really extreme. Third trimester abortion or something.

How 'bout the big stink going on about the movie "Golden Compass"?

How about proposing that cell phones be banned from campus. That ought to wake them bastids up.

topics likely to come up in a college classroom (i.e. stay away from these):

abortion
legalization or decriminalization of pot
whatever the professor's own research focusses on (greatly misguided attempt at sucking up)
drinking age / age of majority discrepencies
vegetarianism
gun control
war
capital punishment
gay marriage
violence in video games/ on tv

Claiming to have disproved hir main hypothesis always goes down well, I find.

We had a student who gave a presentation claiming that Chomsky's views on language acquisition disproved Darwin.

Misery loves company. Oh how I know a few people who are like this in my life. I try to be nice to them if I happen to be around them and if I'm not with them, I avoid them as much as possible.

Other than that, the rest of my life's pretty darn good so I'm lucky and very blessed.

I think I might actually go with trying to persuade them to get off the **** phone while driving...it can be summed up quickly, applies to them directly, is important enough to generate legislation, etc...plus, I get the chance to remind them that they aren't so important as to need to jeopardize themselves and others while operating a 1+ ton vehicle at high velocities on public roads.<HR>

I vote for something a little more unusual. As a former public speaking teacher, I really loved the novel topics. Your classmates will, too. For example, one student gave a persuasive speech saying that our society needed to introduce nap times. I thought it was a great topic. Also, I was less like to be able to compare such a topic to the 10 other speeches I'd heard about gun control or euthanasia.

So, instead of cell phones while driving, perhaps cell phones while on public transportation, in stores, etc. Limiting cell phones to people over 15, etc. Something people won't be expecting.
