Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

Happy Friday all! Sorry I've been MIA, another busy week at work and somewhat lazy week of running, though better than last week. Hopefully I will get in around 8 tomorrow, though it may be chilly & windy. I'm getting a little better at how to dress for it.

Good luck to Joe (& DW), Marilyn, JC, and anyone else who's racing this weekend! Joe, you'll do great--you've really come back quickly. Can't wait to hear about it!

autumn, you have plenty of time to prepare for your half. You'll be ready

spicegeek, I don't think I could lift that kettle bell, let alone swing it! Watch those feet, though--you don't want to break any bones there! Enjoy the vacation taper

misswendy, great tempo run! Are you down to 2 weeks til your full?

Cara, glad to hear you're feeling and running better--and that your mom is doing better too. Don't push too hard until you're over that cough.

jams, I am making myself get out there in the rain... trying to convince myself that it will help prepare me for the colder weather to come. I am keeping my older shoes in rotation for those days. Glad the rain had stopped by the time you got out.

Erin, nice that you have so many possible companions to run with! My DDs are older and live out of state, but we're doing a race together on Thanksgiving--should be fun!

jc, hope the sore throat/cold is better before the race!

Mary, great tempo run!

Chuck, nice job on the 8+. Did your team win?

runjr, glad you're able to get your running in. Have you picked out your next race?

I am still thinking about the Mini Marathon in Indy that kicks off the 500 Festival... just not sure I would enjoy a race that big (35000 runners, biggest half in the country). I did see on the website that they call their pasta dinner the "Mini Marinarathon." I like that... how can I resist?

Everyone have a great weekend, and rock 'n rollers, YOU ROCK!!!!!!!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

Hi everyone,

I ran 4.1 this morning and got home to find DH had cooked me a breakfast! I was a little more tired on this run today, but am pleased to be getting the miles in still. Plan for tomorrow is 8...

Jams - I often run in the rain... I don't advise hail storms though as they hurt rain can be quite pleasant as long as it's not too hard!

Erin - glad you got better weather so that you and River could go for a run!

Jc - hope you manage to avoid that cold. My boss has literally had one for over a month now! Good luck with your race and just do the best you can

Mary - I enjoyed my 'longer' 6 miler too! Isn't it amazing that someone we once considered a long run is now just an easy mid run

Chuck - great job on the 8.17 I'd like some of your weather... it's cold and miserable here most of the time these days

Kim - oooh - your half is coming up soon!!!

Joe - Turn off the auto-pause... you're only cheating yourself You can always just look at the moving time stat on motionbase instead Good luck if I don't catch up with you before!!! And to everyone one else running the same or any other race.

Carmen - hope that crook goes away soon. It sounds to me like you need a few days rest. You'll thank yourself for it after... promise!

Macd - glad to hear from you... i've had a lazy couple of weeks running too - I feel guilty when I don't get the miles in though My plan is 8 tomorrow to so fancy a running buddy I like the sound of that mini marathon!

I'm off home now as i'm still in the office at 18:40 on a Friday night. Work really has been that manic, but couldn't slope off before saying hi to you all!

Happy running everyone and have a great weekend!

Cara x

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

Carmen, yes...my very first half!  I'm excited and nervous!

Got up this morning and did a very difficult 4 miles.  I really wonder why some days are easier than others.  My lungs were not liking the heavy fog/mist and it was making it very hard to see even with my head lamp in that stuff.  All I kept seeing was misty water heading my way...lol.  Tomorrow is my off day and then Sunday I will do 7 miles on the trail that I love by my house.  Any recommendation for mileage next week (the week of the 1/2 marathon)?  I usually take off Monday and run Tues - Friday anywhere from 4-6 miles a day.  I'm thinking that may be too much.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

hi all, my busy week is over.  Travel to Minnesota for a quick trip and then Chicago for a day.  I just got back from running my first tempo run since my race.  I ordered some pictures from my full and should have them soon. I will post after I receive them.

spicegeek - if I ever get to NY I will definitely try to run or workout with you.  That would be fun.

misswendy - IMO I would try to set a pace comfortable early on (stay within your goal pace, don't run with the crowd)  and then you will have more energy at the  end. Be patient and you will finish stronger and achieve what you started out to do.  I saw way too many people take off too fast and burn their carbs right away. Set your first half at a no faster pace than your goal, stay on your pace no matter how you feel early on..   Those are the people that were walking in from mile 20 on.   You are going to do great.  I am praying you get to the start line healthy.

cara - glad you are feeling better.  I have been taking off more than normal trying to recover from my race.  I actually felt better tonight.  Next race is a 5k turkey trot.  Then not until April a HM and another full in May.  How about you?  Have you decided to try a full?

jams - I almost always run outside.  Just run slower and as long as it is not icy.  I run with a knit hat for my ears in the cold and a baseball hat over it to keep the rain out of my eyes. If it is not cold a rain jacket and baseball hat. Summer running in the light rain is awesome.  Just be careful.

erin - double workout with the pulling by River.

carmen - get a foam roller to roll out the muscles.  Just take the lon run easy. You are well trained and should be ready to go.

joe - have fun, you have worked really hard to get to the starting line.

macd - we are running Oshkosh HM in April and the Green Bay Marathon on May for the full.  We are looking at the mini-marathon in Indy as well.  Will with of your DD's run with you in the spring?

runnerkimnj - running my first HM was a day I will always remember. As for next week go to runners world and look at Ryan Hall's HM plan or another plan and follow the last week taper.  IMO just slow down the pace this week for sure. You are just looking to keep your muscles loose.

mary - great tempo run!!!

go Joe, JC and Marilyn.

take care all.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

Hello everyone,  not much time tonight so this will be just a quick check in.  Ran an easy 2 miles today.  My legs are sore from three days in a row.  I think I will get out my foam roller tonight.  I'll get three more in tomorrow, then a rest day Sunday.

I hope all of our racers have a great wekend!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

Ok slightly MIA busy getting ready for my vacation - I have to wonder if it`s worth it  sometimes !! I did my 5 mile run yesterday - the bruises on my foot look really wild now !! Today I boxed this morning - I decided to skip my speed workout as I have race Sunday so instead I did my own kettle bell cardio circuit and some biking - ended up going for dinner with my boxing trainer

Joe - that calm advice was the result of a conversation with my EC about the gym push / pull competition I said it doesn`t matter what happens - I have already won just by having the confidence to even try - it`s so much more than I would have had 2 years ago. On the morning of the competition he said to me - remember - you`ve already won - I tell myself that every time I try for a new goal.

misswendy - you can do whatever you put your mind to - how long to your 26.2 ?

cara - The kettlebells are great for back hips and legs and arms - and yes I`m noticing I`m getting more shredded - it`s a very dynamic workout. Glad you are feeling better

Jams I prefer the dry but I have run in torrential downpours - you never know what the race will be like so best train in all conditions - at least you can abandon a training run of you didn`t pick the right gear

Good Luck to the SA racers !!

Hey everyone

Good luck to all our racers this weekend!!!!

My Neice and I ran her first 5k, she did great! 31 something. She's 12 and has never ran other than PE so I was really proud of her. Her schools coach came up after ward and ask her to join the team and she did. She said she loved it. I did also. It was a very nice run to start the day.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

hey yall

short run on friday, didnt have time for the scheduled 5.

sat long run of 16. my heel really hurt but i pushed through and got back to where i could run ok for the last couple miles. even did the short hill route twice. my pace was good for most of the run, managed to speed back up after the pain lessened.

the full is two weeks from today! i am so nervous!

but i cant wait....

good luck to marilyn joe and jc and any other racers. should be a cool run for them in SA!

chamblin....dr says foot will be sore, but no damage is likely from pushing through. glad to see your cold is going away and you are getting back to running!

jams....i have run many miles in the rain, cold and hot.

dancerun...if my shoulders had muscles i would stare at them too! hope you and dds get out and run together...

jc...hope the cold holds off for your race

maryb...great job on your tempo

chuck...getting a little toward fallish here, but still warm.

joe...that auto pause will give you a better time prob? so go for it! we dont need to know if you stopped! hahaha

cscmartin...if you can run without pain, go for it. otherwise i would take it easy and wait for the hm. you have the distance already.

macd...great job getting back out there for 8. i have been getting lots of great recipes from some of the food blogs out there. have you ever read any? smittenkitchen is my fave. mini maranarathon is NOT to be missed! hahaha!

chamblin...good job dh! what a sweetie. hope you arent working late as much next week. thats no fun!

runnerkim....good idea to take off a couple days before the hm imho!

runjr...cant wait to see the pics. thanks for your prayers and the advice, i will do my best to follow it. the pace goal may be out of reach after resting my foot, and also some foot pain while running slows me down. but after a tough run this morning i have a little more confidence!

massgirl...way to take a break!

spicegeek...thanks for the encouragement. tell ec to dive on top of y our foot next time you drop the kettle to protect you! LOL!

chuck...great news on your neices run! that is awesome! she is setting herself up for a life of running with her cool uncle as inspiration!

love to all

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

Hi all! Got in 8.9 this morning--felt good to finally do some distance, even if I was really slow. Nature rewarded me for doing the hill route:  I startled 3 deer that ran in the woods alongside the road for about 50 yards before disappearing, then as I approached the final bridge, a great blue heron flew up from beneath it.

Chuck, great race and congrats to your niece! That's cool that she enjoyed it and wants to join the school team!

Cara, I didn't see your post until now, so I missed your company... Did you get your run in today?

runjr, I plan to decide pretty soon about the Indy Miniit usually fills before the end of the year. If you decide to do it, I definitely will, but I am leaning toward it right now anyway. Neither daughter can make it this yearit hits too close to their finals. Is the GB Marathon at the end of May? I wouldn't think you'd want to do a half too close to that.

misswendy, glad to hear you're able to get the miles in without causing more damage, but I hope the pain lets up soon!

Good luck to tomorrow's racers! I'll catch up on the rest of the shout-outs later... DH wants the computer to check his bets!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of November 9th

Hey Everyone,

Just registered for this site.  I ran my first 1/2 marathon last April.  My goal was to run under 2 hours.  I am 42 and had been a 100/200/400 sprinter in high shool and college.  I have been running off and on for a number of years but never in a road race.  I ran my first road race on St. Patrick's Day last year and ran 23+ for the 5K.  I had no idea what I was doing.  The sprinter mentality in me came out and I had to suppress it, everytime someone passed me I wanted to go and get them.  Back to the 1/2, I trained with no real plan and ended up running 1:52.24.  I was pleased.  Then came the knee pain and surgery in July.  I have staarted to train again for the same 1/2 next April.  This time around I have a plan.  I plan on only running 3 days a week and cross training the others with a rest day mixed in.  The trouble is that I am still having knee "pain" "discomfort".  The trainers at the health plex tell me that I need to strengthen my quad which I have been working very hard on.  My PHD turned me onto Celadrin.  Anyone ever use this?  I also take 2 Tylenol before each run.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

My goals; under 1:40 for the 1/2 marathon and run a marathon late next summer.

Any help would greatly appreciated.
