why is it that I don't see many runners with water during a marathon?

Am I the only dork with a huge camelback during a marathon? I hardly see anyone with water. Am I the odd one or what? I guess there is a unspoken rule about having water. Ahhh Is there?
Why lug on your back what is readily available throughout the marathon???? After all, a gallon of water weighs 8 lbs.
I have to agree, there is water on the course so I would think most people drink it, I did. I dont think anything is wrong or crazy about carrying your own water. I seen a few at the DC MCM this year.......
It's not only about finishing, its about finishing healthy!
I guess maybe I drink too much. I tried to go without my own and I thought I was going to die.....;\
I actually see lots of folks packin' their own water at marathons. More and more are using the fuel belt type systems that hold four little bottles. Personally, I don't like the feel of carrying the extra weight so I rely on the on-course water stops but you certainly shouldn't feel like you're in some small minority.
Good luck and happy running!

My best friend wears a fanny-pack. I say be yourself! If YOU want water right on you, I say go for it!
I didn't have one during my last marathon and at times I regretted it. I like having a steady pace and the water stops tend to throw that pace off for me.
So especially if the colors of your camelback are adorable, I say BE YOURSELF and who cares what others do! If you are happy and you are your own fan, that's all that matters!

I have ran marathons with and without water bottles. It just depends on the format and how many water aid stations are available. Myself, I would be uncomforatbale with a camle back though. I do like the fuel belt or the similar Nathan belt that carries two bottles and provides a small pouch for Tylenol or a piec of chocolate etc...! ![]()
I like to also use safety pins to attach a couple gel packs. The last few years at the Tampa Marathon and the Sarasota Marathons I only use my race bib belt with no water bottles. These races have water stops at least ecery two miles and other privately stocked stations as you go through the neighborhoods. But at the Marine Corps Marathon and many trail type Marathons I carry the fuel belt. On the Bald Eagle Mountain Mega transect and the Racheal Carson Trail challenege whcih are 24 and 36 miles I carryed my Nathan Belt with two full size bottles plus a Nathan Hand bottle with the elastic hand strap. These are off road rcaes that only offered a few stops each total. So water or power aid etc.... is a must. But dont feel bad about carry what you need. Finishing is whats most important and like somebody said, finish healthy. !!!! Go get it!!!!
Thanks Jay! Your awesome...:D
Wow, I love trail running! I did my first one in Napa. It was crazy!! And your right there is no water.... ok I don't feel so bad now... And yes, I may not be that fastest (yet) but I do finish..lol
The problem is, see, you're not catching enough people.
Once you settle into a pace, you're with the same people pretty much for the rest of the race. If they're not carrying water, that's what you see.

Your right Len, I never thought about that.....
In the two half marathons I've run in the past 2 years, which both parallel a full marathon for the first 11 miles, I saw quite a few runners carrying their own fluids in fuel belts. Most of them, judging by the color, looked like sports drinks, but a lot of them looked like water. Although I've heard most marathons have plenty of water each mile at the water stops, if you carry your own you do have the flexibility to drink whenever you want. Also, whenever you slow down for a water stop, you lose time. That said, I drank the standard issue water at the water stops, but that's just personal preference to not haul the extra weight.

I always take my CamelBak on trail runs because it also allows me to also carry a first-aid kit, emergency whistle, etc.
I'm a running novice, just 18 and training for my first marathon, but in the few races I have been in, I have not carried water because it'll slow me down and I want to finish ASAP!

i've seen LOTS of people carrying their own water. i've done 2 half marathons recently. it is very convenient to have your own water to prevent having to stop for it at the water stops. it also eases some of the crowds that build up at those stops. i'm definitely looking into getting a fuel belt. i'll use it for my training runs first and see if i like it. carrying one bottle in one hand for a long run is no fun at all!!
