Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

Hi!

I, too, am a very beginner runner!  I have never ran anything in my life and I'm 38.  Definitely carting around about 60-70 extra pounds, that slow me way down.  But, I'm ok with being a slow poke.

1 - my overall goal is to completely jog a 10K on March 28th.

2 - I'm using a random C25K program I found online.  I like it because it's distance based, instead of time based.

3 - I'm going about 5 days a week.  Seems I do better with 2 days of jogging and a day of rest.

4 - I don't currently train during my off days.  My dh is trying to get me to do some yoga, but I'm not there yet.

5 - Definitely running outside.  Freezing temperatures and all!

6 - I track my progress by staying on task with my C25K program and by writing down each workout.  I'm also blogging my program, so I can be accountable and remember what I felt like in the early stages.

I am SO happy to have found there are others out there like me.  This is very encouraging!

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

I am also new to running, as I haven't run much since high school. I am not a part of a training program yet, as I am looking for a program in my area. I am in the NW suburbs of Chicago. I started "training" a few months ago and my first run was an ambitous one (Chicago Hot Chocolate 15k) on November 2, where I finished in 93 minutes (averaged a 9:59 pace), which took me by surprise!. But here are my answers to your questions:

  1. My goal is the Chicago half marathon Spring '09

  2. I am not using a training program yet

  3. I run 3-4x a week, with a long run on Saturday/Sunday. I have started to integrate speed workouts once a week,

  4. On non-training days, I will do the elliptical or bike, and I often do light weights and leg machines.  I also do power vinyasa yoga 2x a week (it  totally helps with loosening muscles). I usually take 1 day off a week to rest.

  5. I usually run on a treadmill, but sometimes bundle up and run outside (I prefer that). When I am on the treadmill I make sure to run on at least a 1% inclice to replicate running outside.

  6. I haven't tracked my progress - it's all in my head right now. I am interested in finding a great orogram to track it though.

I know there are a ton of training programs in Chicago - what area are you in??

Hope this helps. Good luck. Happy running!

So you run 4 days a week? is that working out OK?  My trouble is getting OFF the couch!  and getting outside to do the running. The walking part I have down pat.

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

Hello all, I am a 41male.  6'1" and 275.  Up to a year ago I had always lifted weights but since I moved I have done nothing but eat and be lazy.

Well, a month ago my doctor basically told me I was fat with high bloodpressure so I decided it was time to do something.  To get my knees and ankles used to the pounding again I started walking a mile a day, then after a week I started walking about about 25 minutes a day (1.5 miles).  Last week I was finishing my walk by jogging for a minute.  I want to start a run/walk program but don't know when the right time is (walking a mile is pretty easy now).  Does everyone get that feeling like you can't catch your breath feeling when they start?

My end goal is a half marathon.  Any advice?

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

I am a fairly new runner - I've been running since May of this year.  The first time I ran was at an actual 5K race.  I used to walk 6 miles a day, but the peer pressure the day of the race got me to run and I have been running ever since.  I used to run/walk for the 5K.  As of October I can now do an entire 5K without stopping.  My time went from the first race of 36:18 to my newest PR of 26:50 two weeks ago.  I even finished a 10K in 51:55 without stopping.  Running is addictive and feels great.

1. My goal is to complete my training to finish the Myrtle Beach 1/2 Marathon in February 2009.

2. I train with two much more experienced guys and they really motivate and inspire me to keep going.  Couldn't do any of this without them. Thanks Rick and Matt.

3. We usually run together 2 nights a week - anywhere from 5-8 miles.  Then we do a 5K and sometimes a 10K race almost every Saturday.  The weather in the Myrtle Beach    area is great this time of year and there are plenty of races to run.  On days I don't run, I will walk at least 6 miles just to keep myself going.

4. On my off days I try to do some swimming and bicycle riding.

5.  I only run outdoors.  I find running on the treadmill too boring and I get bored.  It takes me forever just to run a mile.  Outside in the fresh air and seeing people makes the time and distance go by faster.

6.  I don't keep a journal or anything.  I just write my times on my racing bibs.  My friend Matt just got a GPS watch so he has been tracking our runs with that.

Keep up the good work.  I started slowly and have since lost 40 lbs from running.  I'm 42 and have never felt better.:)

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

1.  Goal is run (not walk) 1/2 marathon in March; sometime next year do a whole marathon

2.  I hired a personal trainer, who is a running coach. I tried too many times to run on my own.  She pushes me sooooo hard, but has taken me to levels I can't believe in only 6 weeks.   I could barely run a 12-13 min mile for 1 mile in Sept., I just finished a 5K in 31:34 and my longest run so far is 6.75 miles

3.  run 5 times a week  (some speed runs, some hill runs, one long run)

4. I do some strength training (legs mostly) and elliptical.  Just bought a Cannondale bike   I always take at least 1 complete day of rest.

5.  Definitely prefer outside, but run inside probably 2 times a week.  Treadmill is boring, but an excellent pacer.

6.  I track progress on Active and a journal I bought.

Run as far as you can...then run back

Hills are for passing

HI , i am a newby too:

  1. What is your overall goal?

  2. What training program are you using?

  3. How many times per week are you running/walking?

  4. Do you train on non-running days? If so, what do you do?

  5. inside on a treadmill .

  6. I'm tracking my progress on coolrunning/active.com

Ging1:

To find training programs, go to the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA): http://www.cararuns.org/.

This CARA page shows running clubs all over Chicagoland:  http://www.cararuns.org/Running/Running%20Clubs.aspx

On that main page, I found a running club in Oak Park - http://www.oprc.net/

You can also go to Runners World website for training tips. I have found some really great training tips on their website too http://[http://www.runnersworld.com/|http://http://www.runnersworld.com/].

Good luck - I hope this helps find a program you can use!

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

Hey Wanna Run a Half Marathon! We started a running club here in North Myrtle Beach and have about 5 members now.  We run on Tues and Thur nights anywhere from 4-8 miles.  It is a great way to keep the motivation going.  I plan on doing the half marathon in Ocean Isle on January 10 in preparation for the Myrtle Beach Half in February.  Nursing some shin splint/ankle injuries right now.  Doing a 5K tomorrow in Pawley's Island and have gotten my 10 year daughter into running now.  She will do a 5K with me in Myrtle Beach on Thanksgiving.

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

Just want to let you newbies know, if something hurts, DON'T TRY TO PUSH THRU IT!!  I just learned the hard way.  I have been running for 6 months now and training for the Myrtle Beach Half Marathon.  I had been having some shin problems and thought it was shin splints.  Rested for a while, it felt better, so I pushed on with training.  I did too much too fast.  I ran a 5K Turkey Trot on Saturday and at mile 2.5 my leg gave out.  I had to hobble to the finish line and now my leg is not weight bearing.  I will go to doctor tomorrow for an x-ray and I'm really hoping it is not a stress fracture.  I still finished the race at 30:16 (not my best but not my worst either).  But very disappointing knowing that I will not be running for a while whatever the injury turns out to be.  LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND REST WHEN YOU NEED IT!:(
