Horse Buggy's + Amish Men on Bikes!!!

Ok so as I was out for my 8 mile run this morning, not only was I faced with the obvious, avoiding oncoming speeding vehicles, and the ever so popular piles of horse ****, but had one **** of a time competing with the horse and buggy's and amish men on bikes!!!! They were everywhere!! I lost count with the horse and buggy's around 30 and the amish on bikes...there were somewhere around 20. Of course not all at one time, but enough to kind of make you start to go crazy!! And I was literally cut off by one of the horse and buggy's!! This ****** me off, because I was doing my thing running alongside the main highway, when this amish guy decides he doesn't feel like stopping at the stop sign on the side road he was on, and just comes right out in front of me...HELLO, he was looking right at me, so I know he saw me. So I was either going to run right into the horse or go off of the side of the road, and risk falling into this steep ditch that was there. Obviously I didn't chose to give the horse a hug, so I jumped off the side, all while telling him off of course!! I couldn't believe I was actually cut off by an amish person in a buggy...what is this world coming to!! HAHAHAHA!! Anyway, I thought I would share this with you all, and give you a little something to laugh about!! And by the way...does anyone want to meet up with me next weekend and run against the buggy's??

KEEP ON RUNNING!!

Carey

Carey,

Your story had me laughing.  Since I am not Amish, I can only guess that they go to church on Sunday.  You are probably safe any other day of the week.  Your story also brings this question to mind;  Is it possible to have runner road rage?

Mike

Re: Horse Buggy's + Amish Men on Bikes!!!

I had an incident a while back on my long run day.  When I train I usually do so with my iPod, which helps me find that "zone".   I have to be extra aware of my surroundings which makes me choose my routes carefully.  So here I am, running up the side walk.  I was coming up on a corner where the were a couple teen age boys sitting on their bikes, chatting (I guess), and blocking the sidewalk.  As I get closer, I keep wondering when they are going to move out of the way (As my momma would have wanted me to as a boy !http://community.active.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif!).  Well, they weren't moving, so I took matters into my own hands as I wasn't going to divert my course.  AS I got close to them I asked; "Are you going to move out of the way anytime soon or what?".  I guess it was REALLY loud because one of the fine youth fell off his bike.  I am glad I could not hear some of the fine language that the youths were probably yelling back at me.

lol at runner road rage. i have a serious case of it. i have ZERO patience for people speeding around, doing 50+ in 25mph zones.

What about people doing at or under the posted speed limit in the "passing" lane?

oh, mike, don't get me started.. my road-road rage is even worse than my runner's road rage.

how about people who try to merge onto major interstates, like I-95, going 40 miles per hour.

or people who see a cop at the bottom (top?) of the on ramp and so they slam on their breaks, slowing down to 20 or so mph, causing all traffic trying to merge AT THE SPEED LIMIT to slam on their breaks and swerve to avoid a huge pile-up.

or people who, despite beign able to CLEARLY see that there is NO ONE behind your car, insist on pulling out in front of you and almost causing deadly accidents.

and my favorite, which i have actually witnessed, people who realize they've gotten off at the wrong exit and, as if they've never gotten off a highway before and don't know that the on ramp for EITHER DIRECTION can be found shortly after the bottom of the off-ramp, TRY TO BACK UP THE RAMP TO RETURN TO THE HIGHWAY.

omg, the idiots.

Karma,

BACK UP THE RAMP?! Wholy S@@T! That is a new one. It has gottne so bad for me here in VA, I have thought about placing a sign or sticker on the drivers side of my truck that says.

IF YOU CAN READ THIS, IT IS BECASUE YOU ARE GOING TOO SLOW

IN THE PASSING LANE, NOW KINDLY MOVE YOUR SLOW AZZ OVER

TO ALLOW THOSE THAT WISH TO PASS YOU TO DO SO.

I figure that in between the make-up, texting, phone conversations, smoking, and changing radio stations, they might be able to read it.

Re: Horse Buggy's + Amish Men on Bikes!!!

yup, mike, back up the ramp. the first time i saw this, i just kind of shook my head and hit the horn. the second time, i layed on the horn from the top of the ramp till i reached the car (they were halfway down, and the ramp is mildly long) and i really considered getting out and screaming at them about idiocy, but was afraid perhaps i'd get beaten up, as it was dark outside. i mean, seriously, how can anyone possibly decide that backing up an off ramp would ever be a good idea?!

better than the sticker on the driver's side (tell me you have a HUGE pickup, that'd make the idea of said sticker even funnier)... get a bullhorn or some sort of loudspeaker. i would KILL to have a loudspeaker hooked up. i'd probably get shot, though, lol.
