What is your overall goal? To get in shape, lose weight. What training program are you using? none, Run a 5k about once a month, figuring that'll force me to keep at it. How many times per week are you running/walking? from 4-6. Do you train on non-running days? not at the moment Running outside or inside? Outside only, I would get bored inside. Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

What is your overall goal?

Master the 10K distance in trail running races thru 2009 and eventually working up exponentially to 20ks in 2010

What training program are you using?

I don't use any specific program, but I am cross training, adding in new elements to keep it interesting.  I trail run, bicycle, do yoga for men and now I've started to lift weights, dropping the swimming.

How many times per week are you running/walking?

It works out to about 3 or 4 depending.

Do you train on non-running days? If so, what do you do?

Like I said above, bike, yoga, hike, weights, housework/laundry

Running outside or inside?

Always outside, always on a trail

How are you tracking your progress?

I keep a blog on myspace which is totally subjective, and I also mark the calendar with what I did that day so I don't lose track.  I'm not a hardcore anal incrementalist.

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

1. What is your overall goal? My immediate goal is to run a 5K. My long term goal is to be physically fit enough to join the Army JAG Corps next year. At 236, I've lost 15 pounds since September, and would like to lose 75 more.

2. What training program are you using? Robert Ullerys Couch to 5K Program. This is my 2nd attempt with the program, but the longest I've maintained. I'm on day 3 of Week 6. (However, I doubled up on Weeks 4 and 5).

3. How many times per week are you running/walking? 3 times per week running with walking/cross-training days between runs.

4. Do you train on non-running days? If so, what do you do? On alternate non-running days I walk or do the elliptical machine with 1 hour of weight training. Sit-ups, push-ups, and a little yoga everyday too.

5. Running outside or inside? Definitely outside. I love the fresh air and feeling like I'm going somewhere!

6. How are you tracking your progress? Totally old-school. I write it down on my calendar. My gift to myself when I complete Robert's program will be the Nike iPod Sports Kit to keep track of my progress.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE HERE!!!

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

1. What is your overall goal?  My long term goal is to run the Boston Marathon, even if this means I need to join one of the charity groups.  As for short term, I'd like to run a 15k or half marathon next year.

2. What training program are you using? None right now, as I find that following a program can make me push a bit too hard through injuries.  I just run 3-4 miles 3x per week, and have a long run on the weekends, slowly increasing this distance (my next should be 6.5).

3. How many times per week are you running/walking? 4x, although once my knee feels fully better, I'd like to move it up to 5.

4. Do you train on non-running days? Not right now, but I'm going to start doing some strength training next week.

5. Running outside or inside? Always outside!  And this isn't easy, now that I'm running in 20* weather, but I love it.

6. How are you tracking your progress? Forerunner 305 with SportTracks- love it!

Ha! Ha! That's funny. Check out mine:

It looks like absolute madness, but one thing I'm working hard on is being flexible. I used to try and have a perfect workout schedule, and if I missed a day it would completely throw me off and eventually that day turned into a whole bunch more. Now, if the weather is bad or if I'm feeling pain I'll just do a different kind of workout. I keep a change of workout clothes and running shoes in my car too, just in case!

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

Maybe keep that calendar  of what you plan to do a secret from the calendar of the things that you just did.   August was when I first started the new crosstraining program after a 10 month layoff from running only. I have to say, I look and feel much better because of the cross training.  I did a 5 k and a 10k this month and am doing another 10k on Dec. 6th so thats what I'm training for.  Its cool to see you do Tai Chi.  I see the old Chinese guys and ladies doing that in the park at sunrise and I'm all, "pretty soon I'm gonna be just like that!" Or hope to be!

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here
  1. What is your overall goal? Short term goal is to run a full 5K w/o any walking. Long term goal would be to run a half marathon.

  2. What training program are you using? I am following a walk/run schedule that I started back in September.

  3. How many times per week are you running/walking? 3 to 4 times per week depending on my schedule. I walk/run 3 to 4 miles and reduce my walking intervals each week. (approx. 1/4 of my time is walking and 3/4 running and my pace is at about a 13 min mile - I'm taking it slow and steady)

  4. Do you train on non-running days? If so, what do you do? I take a "bootcamp" class twice a week with a trainer at my gym. Core training has really improved my overall fitness and I have lost more weight due to the class and reduced my body fat percentage.

  5. Running outside or inside? Inside on the treadmill. At the moment I am more comfortable there. I do plan to take my training outside as I get better.

  6. How are you tracking your progress? I have been marking my calendar but just started a spreadsheet. I think I might check out the Nike+.

I too am a new runner. I started in September and added the core training in November. Since I joined the gym in June I have lost almost 20 lbs. At the start I had about 40 to 50 mlbs that I wanted to lose. Now I am just hoping to reduce my BMI and just be healthy. I turned 40 last month and it was kind of my wake up call because I finally admitted to myself that I am not invincible and I really needed to take care of myself so I am here for 40+ more years. I am feeling great!

Good luck to everyone! You all inspire me to keep on going!

Kelly

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

I'm Brenda in West Virginia and I'm just starting out so...

What is your overall goal? Just to be able to run... I want to keep increasing my run periods between my walk periods until I am running a mile straight then work up to 5k. But for now just to be able to run

What training program are you using? I am going to try the couch - 5k mp3s that I found online

How many times per week are you running/walking? Right now I am walking a mile 5 days a week. I am trying to work in the running periods just in the last few days

Do you train on non-running days? If so, what do you do? I go to the gym for weight training 4 - 5 days a week

Running outside or inside? inside at the gym on the treadmill. Once I am no longer embarrassed and can run more than a minute at a time I want to start running outside

How are you tracking your progress? In seconds, minutes, no longer feeling like I am going to die or never breath again LOL

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

1. To maintain a good quality of life, and in the short term prepare for the Miami Marathon at the end of January, which will be my 10th full marathon & heaven knows how many 1/2marathons

2.Depends upon the length of the race -- usually use Runner's World programs

3. 3 - 4, but I try to walk a lot on off days

4. I try to but seldom does it work out except on Fridays when I do Yoga

5. Hate running inside especially since my treadmill is down -- I'll run outside unless it gets too cold (usually 0 F or with a wind chill of 0 F) opr unless its raining -- hate running in a cold rain.. misting is ok

6. Usually my Garmin maintains my record with me placing explanations, etc on the porper page

Re: First Time Runners - Post Your Info Here

Hi!  I've only been running/walking about 3 months and I had gallbladder surgery 2 weeks ago.

I really miss my time running as I was just beginning to run more than I walk.  I was running 3-4 times per week.

I only did a few core exercises 2 other days out of the week.  My goal is to run in at least 1    5 K by the spring.  I don't really have

a set training schedule but I do walk/run 30 minutes  3-4 x per week.  I guess I need to set a better training schedule for myself

once I get the ok from my doc.  Just want to say running relieves stress, lifts my mood, and helps me forget a lot of my problems

while I am doing it:D
