Given that I have a full time job, I find myself disrupting my training schedule by one or two days. How is the best way to get back in the swing of things? I have my work out schedule, so do I continue where I left off? Is there a way to make up for lost time??
Definately! Of course it's easier if you know in advance when your breaks are going to be. In that case you can plan big training days before the breaks come up and then take a physical break while you're travelling and unable to train. On a tight schedule I always try to get as much cycling done as possible when I'm home because that is the hardest to fit in travelling or on a tight schedule. You can often fit in a run even when away or busy. The key is to be flexible and work with a week-by-week plan.Of course you can't cram 4 days of missed training into one day but I don't agree that if you miss a day or two here and there you can't re-arrange your schedule a little bit to get your weekly mileage in.
Hope this helps.

The best thing is to work hard at developing training plans that take into account your work schedule and demands as best as possible. Then, when a day hits that even with the best planning you didn't anticipate, whether you skip that day's workout or replace a future workout with that one will depend on a lot of factors. If it is a key workout for a particular training cycle then it should be done on the next available good day. But, also do not forget to factor in appropriate recovery (from training related stresses and work/life related stresses) or else all the training is wasted and not of best quality.
Good luck. It is a very hard balance and one that is best achieved with guidance of a coach.
