Beer

It's Jan 11th and we still don't have a beer thread?

Okay let me start....

Some times I drink a couple beers the night before a run will it effect the run? Will the fact I have a couple beers waiting for me at the finish help inspire a faster time.

Anyone enjoy anything unusual recently? Seems like the last time we visited this subject I was contrasting Peroni to Moretti.

Re: Beer
I run worse if I drink the night before a run. I however keep testing this different beers. Unfortunately...same results.

Re: Beer
my senior year of high school, we'd have saturday morning meets, kick the sh*t out of the rest of the state, and then get trashed that night.

in college? well, after a good race, the celebration process hasn't really changed

I've never tried drinking before a race, seems like it wouldn't be a good idea though

Re: Beer
I drank about 30 beers, seriously, Friday night and did an 8-mile run Saturday at about noon. I was still a little intoxicated but didn't feel too bad after the first mile or two. I thought for sure I'd throw up at some point.

Re: Beer
I have found running to be a good hangover cure. Especially if you're still tipsy.

Oh, there you are!!!

Where's everyone else: IR, MM, LT, etc.???

Are we gonna give it a better go than last year???

Let me tell you of a project I'm working on ... (you'd understand it 'cuz your were here for the Great Beer Thread of '03)

I have next year's book project on the board. It's Called "400 Beers"

"400 Beers???" Well, I've been working on a book called "The Iguana Chronicles: Tales of Love and Adventure in the Caribbean" This is essentially a memoir of our trip to St. Thomas which produced my daughter Mariel, with some pirate stories thrown in. "400 Beers" will be the sequel. It came out of a math exercise.

About a month ago, while on the stat bike on the gym, I started wondering how much I weighed when I was racing really, really, well (39:20 10K PR, 18:36 5K) I figured I've gained 10 pounds since then, most of it in the past 5 years. Ten pounds X 16 oz./pound X 28 grams/oz. (don't ask how I remembered that) X 9 calories per gram of fat yields 40,320 extra calories I've neglected to burn off. Divide by 100 calories per (light) beer and it's roughly 400 beers. Actually, it's 403.2 but I didn't think "403.2 Beers" had a good flow (so to speak) and I think I burned up the extra 3.2 while doing the math (I had to figure it right then, right there, on the bike, sans calculator)

The book is going to be one part reflection of how I gained the weight ... I have journals for Mariel's first couple years; one part journal of losing it again (maybe in the form of a training diary for the Philly Marathon or Timberman 1/2 Ironman or both); and one part bullsh!t stories - whatever I can come up with for filler ... poems, jokes, illustrations, etc.

I might even ressurrect some good passages from the Original Beer thread

Re: Beer
For "The Apprentice"

Flavor Enticement
Dry Hopped with a "sh!t-load" of Cascade hops grown in the Pacific Northwest. Doggie Style has enough hop character to satisfy hop-heads, but isn?t overpoweringly hoppy. It?s brilliant amber-copper color and pleasant malt flavor comes from the addition of Carastan malts.
Original Gravity: 13.0 Plato
Specific Gravity: 1.052
Alcohol by Volume: 5.3%

You have to get your hands on Dogfish Head. My abso-favorite IPA, in :60, :90 and :120 varieties!!!

From Dogfish.com

Our family of Indian Pale Ales includes the 60 Minute I.P.A. and the 90 Minute Imperial I.P.A.. Both feature our unique continuous hopping program, where they receive a single hop addition that lasts over the course of the entire boil (60 and 90 minutes respectively). This breakthrough hopping method makes for a beer that is extremely hoppy without being overly bitter.
"Feel the burn?... That's the sickness and the cure"

120 Minute IPA
Too extreme to be called beer? Brewed to a colossal 45-degree plato, boiled for a full 2 hours while being continually hopped with high alpha American hops, dry-hopped daily in the fermenter for a month and aged for a month on whole leaf hops, 120 Minute IPA is by far the biggest IPA ever brewed! At 21% abv and 120 IBU's, you can see why we call this the Holy Grail for Hopheads!
Released quarterly, very limited availabilty
21% ABV 120 IBU

Descriptors: Marmalade, orange peel, woodsy, minty
Food pairing reccomendations: Duck a l'orange, crepes, fruit pies
Suggested serving glass: snifter
Comparable wine style: Grappa
This beer AGES WELL

Re: Beer
Ahhh, flying dog ... haven't heard that for about 6 months.

I'm in the military and was recently sent to Germany for 2 years. While the beer here is great ... my husband and I sure do miss some of our favorite beers back in the states!!

Drink one or two or three or ... for us!

I used to be able to drink and run when I was in college, now adays I limit it to one or none before a morning run.
