Introduction - future marathoner :-)

Hi all
I just joined the discussion boards here as a way to support myself as I lead up to a marathon in October 2009...seems like a long way off but I need time.
I am a 39 yo woman who is going to run the Portland marathon just before her 40th birthday (we are moving there this summer). I am about 20 lbs overweight from stress...trying to cope in a different way now. I am engaged to a super-fast-super-thin-super-talented-runner so it can be intimidating to waddle along and try not to care about pace and distance when he keeps asking for my times :-). But I am doing it, doing it MY WAY!! And I am having fun at it.
Currently I am training for a 1/2 marathon the first week of April and will then transition to a marathon plan. Right now I am concentrating on dropping weight so that I can increase my speed...those 20 lbs REALLY slow me down.
I have only done a couple 5K races in the past and a couple sprint distance Tris...so this is a step up. More importantly though, the past couple of years have been super difficult for me and I am TAKING MY LIFE BACK!!!
I hope to make some friends here that I can offer support to and get it in return.

Whether I believe I can, or I believe I can't - I am right!
At the age of 49, in 11/04, I announced I was running the 05 Marine Corps Marathon. 30 lbs and 12 months later, I ran my first of 3 marathons.
You can do it!
Excellent!! I believe I can! One training session at a time...thanks for the encouragement!

Yes! Go for it!
By the way, is your fiance a good teacher? If so, you may have also found yourself a good running coach!

Go Erica! Good for you! Just aim to finish injury free and have fun!
Preparing for the marathon is simple...but hard.
All you have to do, is do the miles.....
Thanks everyone! Tonight I did 6.2 on the half marathon course I will be running in early April. It was tough tonight - 23 degrees and I forgot my headlamp. I just kept trying to focus on the present moment and just kept moving forward. It is done and I feel great! and my body feels so well worked - a good night's sleep is ahead. Thanks for all your support!

Holy cow! 6.2 in 23 degrees? You're already a trooper...the marathon is going to be a walk in the park for you...
Great work - keep going!
Sounds like you are well on your way - great attitude and looking well ahead. Don't worry about times - focus on a plan and hopefully you are following a plan. Be reasonable in your goals and you can make it happen. Your goal for your first marathon should be to finish. And if you are having funa and along the way you lose weight - what a bonus. Keep up the good attitude and training.
Thanks guys, I love all the support!

Hi Friend,
I am running my first marathon on Feb 15, 2009 (breast cancer awareness marathon in Jax Beach, FL). God help me!
I am just running to finish - it will be my first and will be for all those people with breast cancer. i am keeping that in my head when i feel like quitting on my training runs.
The race will be easy, it's the training that is hard.
Stay the course and waddle on! I am waddling too!!!! (Think of the Comcast turtle, Miss Slowsky)
