I bought a light weight, 3 LED head lamp at REI last spring. It takes 3 AAA batteries. My wife and I used it for the Texas Independence Relay in March, so that would be about 18 hours running. I also used it at the ET Midnight marathon last summer ~ 5.5 hours.
Head lamps are kind of strange to use. It feels odd on my head, but I sort of got used to it. I think a heavy one would bounce a lot. It definitely beats carrying a flashlight.
One problem is that when the batteries run out it goes off without warning. So if you're running a long trail run out in the boonies you might need to carry spares.
I have used it several times this winter because I want to run outside and there are no street lights for about a mile on part of my route. It has a pretty wide beam when all 3 LEDs are on. It has a flashing mode but I don't know what I would use it for.
I suggest buying it at REI. They are good about accepting returns so if you get one you don't like you can return it and try a different one.
I wore it on a camping trip and it was much more convenient than using a flashlight. Come to think of it, I should use it when I work on my car.
The brand is Black Diamond.
