us marine with bad knees

i just got out of the us marine corps. towards the end of my tour of duty my knees were hurting after every physical fitness test from my 3 mile run. i never paid any attention becuase that was part of being a marine and i just sucked it up. then after my contract was over i got my knees XRAYED nd found out my shin and thigh bones have been grinding down on each other to where there is no more cartilage. is there any exercises/ suppliments or anything at all that i can do to get myself back into running. i wanna do any triathlon that i can get into for a first. please i will do almost anything(including somewhat cheap surgury with a fast recovery).

tough question - probably best answered by a doc

I'm not a doc but maybe try glucosamine (spell) have heard grea things about it but don't know if it will help in your situation. really need to talk w/ a sports doc or at least a real doc. what did the docs who took your xray say you could do?

BTW thank you for you service to our country.

Brother, Get to the VA as fast as you can, call your local goverment office and ask for the number to the local VA rep. You have service related bone and joint degeneration and are probably entitled to Disability and FEDERAL HEALTH care from the VA. Just wondering what was your MOS? No good ortho surgery is cheap, but it may not matter if you can get into VA. As a for instance, my father in law was a drafted Army mortarman in vietnam, only did his required draft service.  30 years latter his knees started failing him.  The VA has offered to do a complete double knee replacement and he gets about 1200 a month in disability.  DO NOT feel guilty about asking for benefits you earned with your sweat and hard work.  I hope you get the help you need.  Semper Fi Brother.  Here is to a speedy recovery, but if the path is long heres to the heart to finish.  if for some reason they tell you you will not be a runner, make sure you get a second opinion from a real sports medicine guy.  If that fails, the bike and swim might just be your permanent fallback, but there are a ton of non-run events out there.

Re: us marine with bad knees

Brother,

I know the feeling.  I too am a Marine and completely underatnd the rigors of service.  like you have had to endure the many days of suck it up and to from the front.   I have done a couple prints but nothing longer.  I am ensuring the challenge of doing an Olympic and 70.3 distance this year.

Keep charging and Semper Fi.

Where are you located?

Take it slow and use the old crawl walk run method.  I supplement with added swim days and double bike in order to get the cardio I need.

I had 3 brain surgeries and 1 internal surgery after coming home.

Keep pushing
