I'm training for the upcoming Tri season and I'm really beginnig to kick my workouts up a notch. So, I'm looking for recommendations on a post workout/race recovery drink. I'm looking for something that I mix and drink immediately after (or during the first 30 minutes) after a run, bike, or swim workout. I've done some online research, but prefer to ask real users rather than trust the marketing "hype" posted on websites. Thanks in advance for your advice.
I'm a fan of 2 products in particular: Fluid Recovery drink (www.livefluid.com) and Infitnit Nutrition (www.infinitnutrition.com).
As a disclaimer, I know the owners of Fluid (went to school with one of them) and know the RD for Infinit well. So part of the reason I recommend these companies is because I trust them and beleive in thier purpose as well as their products.
The most important aspect of recovery (other than rehydrating the body) is to rapidly replace glycogen - and doing so by drinking something quickly in the 30 minutes after a workout, as you mentioned, is ideal. Somewhere between a 2:1 and 4:1 Carbohydrate:Protein ratio is ideal (20-40 grams of CHO with 10 grams protein, for example). Fat is not really necessary in a recovery drink since it slows digestion.
Try either/both of these products and let me know what you think.

Hi! I found a great line of nutritional products at this link http://www.marketamerica.com/chughes/categories-737/sports-nutrition.htm . The Preburn is good for fueling up the muscles with vitamins, minerals and protein about a half hour before your event. Hydrate is good during your workout - much better than the other sugary drinks like Gatorade. And the Afterburn is a protein drink specifically formulated for muscle recovery. A couple different choices in flavor for each. I've had great results! Oh, and I found that you earn reward points by signing in as a preferred customer. Good for some free products now and then!
Coconut Water is a natural and excellent electryolyte replacer. It has natural potassium, sodium and has higher amounts than store bought drink replacers with no artificial sweeteners or artifical dyes. You can buy a case on Amazon. I use mine in smoothies and when I am under the weather as well.
I use Hammer Nutrition Recoverite and if you decide to buy, enter my client #97447 and receive 15% off your order plus they throw in free samples of other products. Check out the link at the bottom which takes you to the nutrition information. You're looking for a ratio of carbs and protein to replenish your system. Try Monavie Active, (www.monavie.com) a blend of 19 nutrient rich fruits from around the world (main ingredient the acai berry), packed with antioxidants, phydonuriants and omega 3,6 & 9. Monavie is already used by the Cannondale cycling team and many pro athletes from all kinda of sports, taken before and after activity the antioxidants in the fruit help prevent the build up of lactic acid in the muscles, and re-energize the body for a faster recovery. I have been using it for a couple of years and had nothing but positive results.
Of course there are so many products on the market which to choose. I have tried a lot of them to find which one worked best for me and of course liked the taste. I have been using Endurox for a long time now. I would recommend it, but of course you need to try a few to see works for you and not what works for someone else. Happy racing
There are many good ones out there, so try a few for taste and read the labels carefully for content. I've been happy with Race Recovery by EAS. The taste is barely tolerable for me but other runners I know have no problem with it. It's been my best post-marathon drink. Also try some real food. Consider what your body needs during recovery (plenty of info online) and make a list of foods you like that will supply the necessary nutrients while minimizing the things to avoid. Then you have your post-workout or post-race menu.
Alot of my friends use a new product called enlyten electrolyte plus strips (www.enlyten.com/claydee) Sometimes they preload the strips before they begin events. Hope this helps.
Hands down, Mike's Mix is a great product! I've tried all the other supplements on the market and although they worked, the price was killing me. I stumbled upon Mike's Mix (www.mikesmixrecoverydrink.com) through another website and when I compared it to Endurox, Fluid, etc they had the same ingredients but was half the price. Of course, I was convinced there was a scam there somewhere. I ordered it and liked it. They are a small company and seem to focus on keeping the product simple. The taste took a little getting used to at first (mild vanilla flavoring) but the price was great and it worked great. I've since switched to using it with milk and really, really love the taste. It's like a milk shake. Yum!
