Relay swim tips

I'm apart of a 3-person team for a 10-mile relay swim taking place two weeks from now. Do you have any suggestions for a first-time open water relay swimmer? Its an early morning start so staying warm between each leg will be important. We are going to cycle through each teammate to provide ample rest. Any more advice?

My advice would be to cook dinner for your teammates the night before. Then offer to take them out for food and drinks after the swim. I think they'll really appreciate that. If your team averages about a half-hour per mile, the event will take five hours, so definitely have some snacks for your teammates, too. I bet they like Fig Newtons and Oreos. That's energy food, right there.

    Re: Relay swim tips

Once the race starts, and depending on how many swimmers in the water, it can be difficult to tell which swimmer is on your team.  If you know, then you can track their progress from the beach and gauge how much time you have in between legs.  I think the race gives you a swim cap for the relay, but if not, that's one way to see your teammates.  (especially if your teammate is wearing a bright pink one with flowers on it.)  Getting in to swim, then getting out, then getting in again, and then getting out, and then...  that can mess with your thermostat.  Especially with water around 65 degrees and no wetsuit.  I recommend pants and a jacket.  Also, bring a few pairs of socks so your feet won't go numb; it's nice to have a dry pair after each leg.  And definitely a hat of some sort.

Other than that, I second what Jesse@Active said!

Id have to say after each legg get out of your wetsuit and hang it. a cold wetsuit on for that long of a  period can keep you colder than putting on sweats for 30 or 40 minutes. There is a wetsuit hanger out now that blows air through your entire suit drying it quickly made for surfers who surf more than twice a day. Other than that keep fueled using "hammer" nutritional drinks in powder form.HEED is agood one, it offers electrolights and calories yull need for such an event. Good luck, browtothebone
