I'm not trying to find out who the toughest athletes are, swimmers, cyclists, runners.
I am curious though, before training for your first triathlon, what sports you liked best. Before triathlon, you were a _______ ?
Or, is triathlon your first sport?
*To clarify, yes, I'd like to read everyone's response.
All newbies. All viewbies.
Triathletes with decades of experience.
Fast triathletes. Slow triathletes.
Include any sport etc you've enjoyed at any age.

I hope you're asking for anyone's input. I'm a rook...first tri is in May. I was originally a competitive swimmer throughout my teen and highschool years. After about 17 years of inactivity, other than occasional softball, basketball, and strength training...I decided to start jogging to get in shape. I ran a 5k and took 2nd in my age group. From there I decided, hey why not give a tri a shot... The only bad part...I'm in a serious battle with the bike.

I've always been active since middle school with at least soccer and tennis. Then in high school I was still playing soccer and tennis, but I got into working out at the gym - running and weights - too. In college I continued with gym cardio and weights, adding flag football here and there, and I stopped with soccer and tennis. After graduation, when I started to work in the real 9-5 world, I kind of dropped off for a while - about a year I guess. I'd been thinking about getting back into working out and going to the gym but I didn't see the urgency, I was bored with working out for the sake or working out. Tthen I read an success story in one of my fitness magazines about a woman who decided to get healthy and became a triathlete. That's what inspired me to get healthy and active again (and lose the 30 lbs I had gained in my hiatus). At first I started training to get healthy and lose weight. Then I actually signed up for the race and started making goals for myself. I did my first race.. and I was hooked. After that losing weight has been a positive side effect to my training, but it was no longer the focus. My training focus had switched to becoming stronger, faster, better. Now I do tri because I'm addicted (of course). But also because I get to set goals and feel so good when I put in the time, the effort, the blood sweat and tears to reach them.
Golfer.
In high school I was a football player and ran track as a sprinter. In college I joined ROTC and the Army changed me from a sprinter to a distance runner. I did my first tri in 1998 as something fun to do while stationed in Korea. I came to the States and did a tri season in which I completed a half ironman and really got the tri bug. 9/11 put a stop to my serious tri competion since I was either training to go to Iraq/Afghanistan or in Iraq/Afghanistan. I stayed fit but started to put on some weight. I"ve finally got a chance to go to a year long Army school and I wanted to get into better shape and lose some of the weight I'd gained, so I've scheduled two half ironman's for this year with the goal to lose weight and beat the half ironman time that I put up almost 9 years ago. So far I've lost 25 pounds and I'll let you know in June after Ironman 70.3 Kansas if I met the second goal
Initially I was a soccer player. Moved to weight lifting then running in college and caught the triathlon bug last year after buying a bike.

Before triathlon, I was a football player in high school. I always saw the Ironman World Championships on TV in high school and have always been fascinated and thought it was something I would really enjoy. I bought a bike in 2004 and enjoyed riding around like I did when I was a kid, but I figured I'd put that riding toward a goal. I started running more, and signed up for my first sprint in July 2005. I worked hard on the bike and run, but didn't train for the swim at all. I got really nervous when I saw that distance to the first bouy! I got through, and did another in August 2005, and a third in July 2006. I missed racing last year because of a calf injury, but am ready to get back to it with 3 or 4 races this year including stepping up to the Olympic distance for at least 1 race! I can't wait for the weather to break so I can get outside and play!
around 9 years old, I played soccer. I loved it but I couldn't breath. I'd lose my breath quickly and had to be taken to the doctor. There they did tests and said I had severe allergies. I guess my mom pulled me from soccer.. not really sure, but I never played again.
then at around 12 up into high school, I was a cheerleader. truth is, I wished I could have play field hockey, soccer or something, but it was too expensive for my family. For cheerleading, all I needed were sneakers. I tried track once, I was super fast but didn't have any long distance ability. I'd spit blood during our warm ups. I gave that up in about a week...
So although I had the desire, I just didn't seem to have the means, money or health.
Running was my absolute weakest sport when I began this in November, and now as of January 2009 it is my strongest sport!
drunk.
I started swimming when I was 10. I took up biking when I was in high school and started running in college. It took me twenty years to put all three together. They have some tris in this area with kayaks which I want to try.
I will be doing my first tri in July.
But I have been a competitive swimmer, a soccer player, a gymnast, karate, and I ran/jogged and lifted weights on the side in order to crosstrain for the above said sports.
Been doing tri's for several years now. I was competitive swimmer from age 5 or so. In high school I rode & ran in training for swimming & also played soccer & did gymnastics. I then played ultimate frisbee, softball, basketball, & indoor soccer through college. I started cycling for transportation in europe & began running for exercise. I watched my first tri in Europe and thought, "that could be fun." I didn't swim regularly for about 10 years until I discovered a masters team who got me into my first tri as a relay swimmer. I was hooked.
