Wish I had some crashing waves to listen to. I appreciate your comment about listening to birds, etc., and I do run without my headphones sometimes, but I also enjoy music. For one thing, in my busy life it is the only time I ever get to listen to music. I also like to listen to NPR. It really distracts me on a long run. This American Life, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, and The Sunday Puzzle are my favorites. I listen to the podcasts of those shows. I also listen to More Hip Than Hippie.

The best running songs are those which can be successfully used in a training or competition montage in a sport movie. Just stay away from the songs used during the "shaken confidence" montage of the same movies. If the song is sad enough to make Rocky or Rudy want to quit, it will completely demoralize any of us mortal runners.
These are a few of my faves on my long runs:
"Miles Away" (Rebirth Remix) Madonna
"I like to move it" (Erick More Club Mix)
"Run It Back Again" (Corbin Bleu) Radio Disney Exclusive
"I'm Running" (Mary Mary) The Sound
"Run The Show" (feat. Busta Rhymes) Kat DeLuna
"Take It On The Run" (REO Speedwagon)
"I Ran" (So Far Away) (Workout Remix)
"Till I Collapse" Eminem

I was around in the 80's and don't remember some of your stuff-- I'll have to agree that the Stones are high on my list too... But, don't forget Fleetwood Mac and Rheana and Go your own Way... But, I think as far as I'm concerned, you should listen to some of the 60's stuff like "Pipeline" by the Chantays which refers to the inside of a large wave that surfers try to get into.., the BeachBoys , Jan & Dean, etc...
ANother I like is "White Wedding" by Billy Idol.....
WOW! I must be some whack job combining all of these decades of sound... ANd I still didn't even touch some of my 50's stuff...........
harder better faster stronger - daft punk
technologic - daft punk
timebomb - beck
what's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding - elvis costello
suddenly i see - kt tunstall
I like music that helps me keep the rhythm of my run or that helps me pick up the pace. Here are a few favorites:
"Los Angeles" by Sugarcult if you like a good steady beat to your music (about 5.6 mph on the treadmill)
"Whine up" by Kat Deluna (english verison)
"Ready 2 Go" by Republica
"Perfect Day" by Hoku (good easy jogging music)
"I'm Free (Heaven Help the Man)" by Kenny Loggins from the Footloose movie soundtrack
"Take on Me" by Aha for sprints or a 7+mph treadmill run
Thanks for the other music suggestions here !
I like either really fast beat stuff or really slow, relaxing stuff.
Lately I have been on a kick of listening to GreenDay.
The beat is perfect for running!
I also like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Coldplay.
Actually classical music is great for running too believe it or not!
