Favorite Boston Qualifiers

For those who've run enough marathons to compare: what marathons do you think are the best qualifiers and why?

I've only run three marathons but I hope (with a lot of work - I PR'd at CCM in 3:56) to BQ next year. I'll turn 35 in Dec '06 so I get the age break time of 3:15:59.

I'm leaning toward using CIM because it's at the end of the year, it's fast, and I'm familiar with the course as it was my first marathon.

I'm hoping srlopez chimes in here. :-)

I am hoping to BQ at the Shamrock Marathon in VA beach, the course elevation change is only +/- 3 feet and it only happens twice in the span of about 2 miles!

I was talking to another runner who said that such a flat course is really hard to run as there is no variety. Any thoughts on that statement?

I ran a BQ on six different courses this year.
Martian Marathon
Glass City Marathon
Flying Pig Marathon
Cleveland Marathon
Sunburst Marathon
Chicago Marathon

Chicago for sure because it was the course that I ran my first BQ(2002).

If you're pressed for time, your best bet is Hyannis, because the race is run two days before the deadline for Boston Qualifiers. It's also not a hard course (although there are no crowds and the weather might suck).

Good to know about Hyannis. I could give myself three chances then with something like:

- A race in Oct. Not sure which. Chicago is fast, but crowded. Maybe Steamtown or Wine Glass.

- CIM (Dec).

- Austin or Hyannis (Feb). Maybe Miami but it's warmer than I'd like.

Shamrock '06 is too soon for me to be ready to BQ at and is run too late to BQ for the '07 Boston.

the problem I see with Austin is that it is very downhill 1st half, my legs took a beating and it was a long time before I recovered. If you are planning on BQ qualifier Feb 2006 and then Boston 2006. I wouldn't count on a great Boston. (although others have done it, you never know)

I had an excellent experience with CIM and recovery. It's rolling in the beginning, flat, and then downhill. Recovery for me was zero. i ran the next day before catching my flight. (I also had excellent weather that year). It was chilly in the morning and it was great that when you got bussed out, you could get out to use the porto-potties and then get back on. I sat on the bus until 15 minutes before race started. Unlike Grandma's where it was raining and the bus dropped you off and left and there's no shelter to stay warm and dry.

Have you thought about Detroit, it has the bridge across to Canada but the rest is flat and it is a managable size. It is well organized and the weather has been pretty good through the years.

I've run Houston 3 times and it's my favorite marathon. It has great organization and with around 5000 runners is the perfect size IMO.

You're right about the concrete, but that's the only drawback I've seen about that race.

Re: Favorite Boston Qualifiers
or you can run a race in Ohio called "Last Chance for Boston" on February 26, 2006. I'm already signed up to do it as a training run. The sick thing is that it is on a "1 mile loop course".
