I am about to begin training for my first Olympic distance triathlon (1 mile swim, 25 mile bike, 10k run). I completed two sprint distance (500 yard swim, 15 mile bike, 5k) triathlons over this past summer and myself to be a pretty seasoned runner (1/2 marathon shape almost year round, completed 5 marathons,and keep a base of about 25 miles per week minimum). Currently I can swim 1 mile but it takes me almost 40 minutes and I am certainly NEW to swimming. Due to cold weather conditions, I teach one indoor cycling class per week and try to attend one other class. Once the weather warms up I will take to the road, but am not super comfortable on the bike either. In my past triathlons (both very hilly) my bike mph averaged about 16.5-17. When looking for a triathlon training plan I have found a lot of freebies for beginners online and on local club sites, but many of them seem to be for real "beginners". Since I am a fairly strong runner and can swim a mile already (yes, slowly) I was wondering if there were some better plans out there for someone like me. I don't want to set myself back, but I also feel that some intermediate plans may be too intense. I know I could create my own, but wasn't sure if any of you had any secret sites where plans were free and could be customized per athlete. Any insight would be great.

See if you can find Triathlete Magaine's Essential Week-by-Week Training Guide at your local library. If the library doesn't have it, many libraries will allow you to order a book from another library through an interlibrary loan program. It takes a little more work than hopping online and having a plan at your fingertips, but the book is a great resource. Or if you're serious about triathlon and think you'll be into it for a few years, looks like you can get a new copy for under $15 at Amazon. This book has plans 10 plans each for sprint, olympic, half iron, and iron, ranging from absolute newbie to semi-pro. You'll definitely be able to find something in there for you.
If you haven't already check out triathlete magazine, they are a little pricy regarding annual costs for the subscription, but offers advice, tips, and training programs form sprint to IM, also Xterra. There is a spectacular Olympic plan in February's issue of 07 titled 12 weeks to an Olympic PR, very detailed plan that you can tailor from a beginner to advanced triathlete. Plus its free after you get your subscription, there really is no need to visit coaching websites or pay for plans, there all in this mag, plus the training and tips come from well known triathletes, not fly by night coaches on the web who are a dime a dozen. If you want a coach, you have to work with them one on one anyways to get any real benefit. Good luck!
The magazine also has the added benefit of being able to keep you up to date on training methods, equipment, and events. Worth every penny as far as I am concerned.
I agree! Triathlete mag always impresses me with the content. My one complaint is that there are so many dang ads! Sometimes it feels like reading a catalogue. However, the articles are so good that I wouldn't dream of ending my subscription because of that.
It is true they do have a ton of ads, some of which I am happy to read. I like seeing the attention that the sport is getting now, the more ads we see the better the sport is doing overall I think. Glad to see other fans!
I'm posting here because I im a similar boat as jldowne. Have done two tri's and want to step up to an olympic tri this early spring. Seems like the minimum time recommended to train up to one is about 16-18 weeks! anyone know of any shorter training schedules...granted it really depends on your conditioning. I've been doing solo tri's in the gym this winter...
can comfortably swim one mile in just over 30mins....run sub-9 minute 5 miles...bike um ouch...
maybe less than 16 weeks is not good? maybe sign-up for an olympic later in the year and bang out a sprint before?

There are 12 week programs for Olympic distance races. I think you can find a program to meet your expectation. If you want to complete an Olympic distance and you have the base you refer to then a shorter plan would be OK. If you want to dedicate more time to race prep you might have a faster or more competitive race, then you might look for a longer plan that helps get your biking up to snuff.
