Live and learn!
I don't like injuries but I welcome them as learning opportunities for myself and hopefully I can pass on the information to you all as well so you can identify if you're experiencing similar symptoms as this message will live in the archives of our online community if you should ever need to search for it.

I just had an appointment with a doctor who is a "board-certified sports chiropractor and is A.R.T. (Active Release Technique) certified, 2-time Ironman triathlon finisher, avid mountainbiker and ultramarathoner specializing in a myofascial and soft-tissue approach to injury rehabilitation with emphasis on a quick return to sport for the injured athlete." and we determined that I strained my Vastus Medialis Obliquus (VMO) from the speed effort (over-striding) at Carlsbad 5000 which I followed with 26-miles of running the same day that had some really steep downhills. 3 days later I did a workout with another really steep downhill run and a lots of lunges...
He did some work on it and its already starting to feel better! He recommended no running until its way better and that I should continue with my other activities and just limit my range of motion so no pain/discomfort comes from that area. He also said applying heat tot he area will help with circulation and increase blood flow which will aid the healing process.
He also mentioned that when I do start running again, to pay closer attention to my cadence and make sure its really high, so to prevent over striding.
