Spring or early Summer race as a BQ

Any thoughts on a marathon this Spring or early Summer for a potential Boston qualifying time? I just ran Mardi Gras last weekend (my first marathon) and missed my BQ by a little over 3 minutes. I feel decent and was thinking about maintaining my base and taking another shot at Boston. I figure I need at least 2 months to recover (is this realistic?) and I am looking for something fairly flat.

I am planning to run NYC in November but I am not sure it would be the best place to try to qualify. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, I got my BQ 12 weeks after my previous marathon.

There are plenty of schedules that will help get you to the line. Just find a marathon that you want to run (location, course, festivities) and then find a schedule that will meet your needs.

There is a good selection of spring marathons that would work. I like the National Capital in Ottawa. However there are merits of qualifying in a fall marathon--better weather for training and a 2 year qualification for Boston. There is another thread where people list the courses where they PR'ed--that would give you an idea of good runs.

3 minutes off a BQ on your first marathon is great--you won't have a problem finding 3 minutes the next time.

Cleveland is a nice race. Flat and well organized, lots of people but not TOO big...

I think Nashville on 4/29 is a good race depending on the weather. A few hills though.

Re: Spring or early Summer race as a BQ
Is there a reason you want to race so soon? You could qualify in the fall and still run Boston next year after you qualify.

It seems to me that since this is your first marathon, you don't know yet how fast your body recovers from this distance. I can recover from a goal HM in 1-2 weeks, but for the full it takes me 3-4 weeks before I feel like I could do some quality work again (I've run 6 marathons so far).

What is your running history ... are you new to running or just new to running the full marathon. Are you younger or older and therefore need less/more time to recover.

I agree that there are plans out there to do back to back marathons and many do them successfully but you also run the risk of injury and then instead of running the second marathon you end up not being able to run at all and then you'll be back at having to build your base again.

IOW ... listen to your body and don't force it, there's lots of marathons out there.

NJ and Burlington (VT City) have marathons in April and May, which could potentially get you qualified for next year. I believe they're changing the NJ course this year into a double-loop course. As for VT, I just hear it's an awesome race and I'm excited to be running it this May!
