Choosing a BQ marathon in New England

Hi, I'm hoping to qualify for Boston this fall, but I'll need a flat fast race to do it. I live in Massachusetts, and am thinking of Hartford or Baystate. Any advice on these or others nearby? I have 2 small kids, and can't travel far. Thanks much.

Out of the two, I would choose Baystate marathon. Hartford has a tough last 10k with tired legs. I PR'd at Baystate. It is a smaller race as well. Good luck!

I've done both and can't think of a reason to go with Hartford over Baystate. The one amenity I can think of is the showers that are available after Hartford, but that's not enough to go there, especially if Lowell is closer to you. Crowd support and other benefits typical of a big marathon aren't really there at Hartford, and Baystate is a faster course.

Farther afield but decent course and an excellent event is the Philadelphia marathon

I can not atest to the flatness or ease of the others but I can agree with the comment about the hills for hte final 10K of Hartford.

They have done me in 2X

Clarence DeMar if you will be ready by end of September and do not mind smaller(no) crowds. I will second the Philly suggestion too.

Re: Choosing a BQ marathon in New England
A couple of years ago, I ran my fastest ever marathon (at the time) at the Around The Lake marathon in Wakefield, the last weekend in July. It starts at 7:00 PM so it's kind of different. Actually it consists of a 8 laps around Lake Quanapowitt. It is held as part of a larger event - a 24-hour relay/ultramarathon. So once you finish, the other runners continue on for the next 20 hours or so.

The course is USATF Certified and there are mile markers

Now I would not call this my first choice for qualifying -- after all many people would not like doing laps in a marathon. Also even though it starts at 7:00 PM, it's not exactly held in the coolest time of year. But the whole larger event around it gives it a weird, cool kind of energy. The fact that there are relay and ultra runners there means that there are always runners to pass

Also I should say that this event is put on by my club so I'm not an impartial observer.

However you did say you can't travel far. If you decide the time-frame fits, it's an option

Re: Choosing a BQ marathon in New England
Hi
I ran Baystate three years ago. It is a very flat course. There are a lot a long stretches where there are no people to cheer you on but on the other hand plenty of space for your family to get a front row view to see you! It is a double loop course and the finish is in the the Lelacheur Park ( the minor baseball league) so that is neat. They have announcers that will announce names as the runners come in. Your famile can sit in the stands as well to watch you finish. The year I ran it there were some organization problems like there was only one port-o-potty on the course and some of the water stops ran out of gatorade but I think the race has improved as it is now been taken over by someone else. I think it is the guy who owns Marx running store in downtown Lowell but don't quote me on that. If so you could go in to the store and talk with him. Good luck with your BQ! I am running Boston this year on an invitational number. I don't think I would ever be fast enough to run a BQ.

Re: Choosing a BQ marathon in New England
I ran Baystate as my first marathon last year. It's certainly as flat as everyone says, but the terrain itself is quite variable- the suburban parts are nice, but the more urban places with lots of cars (not to mention a bridge with ripped-up pavement where everyone essentially had to run single-file into traffic) were very distracting. Fast? Probably. Aesthetically pleasing? Certainly not. I'm probably going to run the Cape Cod marathon this year instead.

What about "Mystic Places" in CT? I've never run it, but I think a few others here have. It's in the middle (?) of October.

Another option would be Vermont City - there is a hill at about the 15 mile mark, but is otherwise relatively flat.

Re: Choosing a BQ marathon in New England
As a member of the Greater Lowell Road Runners, I suppose it falls on me to do the obligatory pro-BayState plug. I'll try to sound as unbiased as possible....

BayState was my first marathon. If you've never done a marathon before, I think this is a good first one. The course is very flat so you can get into a rhythm and not after to worry about what happens when you go uphill or downhill late in the race...as there are no hills. If you're looking for a quirky or exciting course, this probably isn't it. If you are looking for predictable and flat...this is where you should go. Predictable and flat can be good in certain cases. Having done a few marathons now, I actually find I prefer a few hills on a marathon course just to allow myself the chance to use different muscles during the race. However, I'm glad I did BayState as my first marathon since it was easier to train for just one type of terrain without hills.

While not much to write home about, the BayState course does have its scenic moments. I do enjoy running along the river near the Tyngsboro bridge. You have to run this section twice as there is a double loop. I kind of like running over bridges....and you cross three bridges four times during this marathon.

The ballpark finish is kind of neat. It allows a nice place for spectators to congregate and it is kind of fun running around the park during the last couple of tenths of a mile seeing "home" come closer and closer.

We try to organize the race better each year. Port-a-potties have been added to more spots than a couple of years ago. There are ample water and gatorade stops. We are pretty responsive to feedback from runners. We also care about putting on a good race. In fact, as an ex-member of the board of directors for GLRR...I can say we've definitely had some spirited discussions about how to improve it.

BayState is a good race. There a lot of other good races in New England too though. Lowell certainly isn't as scenic as Cape Cod but it does have a flatter and probably faster course. I don't consider the Lowell course ugly though. Sure you run by a couple of mini malls, but miles 5 to 10 of the Boston Marathon is even less of a postcard backdrop in my opinion...but that doesn't stop me from doing Boston.
