What are some good half marathons in Virginia? I have run the
Charlottesville Half, which runs in March, which is a great course, but
challenging (i.e. hilly). I also ran the Patrick Henry Half in Ashland last year, which I
thought was a good course and well run, but it was very hot (it's in August).
I am thinking about the Danville Half
in September which apparently is flat and fast. Anybody here ever run
it? Or know of any other good half marathons in Virginia?
The Shamrock Half in Virginia Beach during St Patricks Day weekend is a good one.
Also, the Rock and Roll Half Marathon at VA Beach at the end of summer.
Did you know that the Richmond Marathon is also going to include a half this year? I don't know what the course is going to be, but the marathon course is lovely, so if it's any part of that, it'll be nice! The Richmond Marathon is beautifully run, so I'm assuming the half will be as well! They are the same day.
Yes, I heard about it. I am sure that will be a great race. II am also guessing it is going to be very popular. I ran the Richmond full marathon last November and loved it. This year I am running the Marshal University Marathon in the begininng of November, so the Richmond Half may be too soon afterwards.

I'll echo these. Shamrock was a blast this year and the course is super fast and flat. I haven't done Rock & Roll yet but I'll be down there Labor Day weekend this year.
One note about VA Beach: It's EXPENSIVE! The R&R race has hotel costs were approach $400 a night with a 3 night minimum! I'm staying in Chesapeake for $70/night with no 3 night minimum. I think I paid close to $200/night in March.
My favorite Virginia half marathon is the Colonial Half Marathon which is held the last Sunday in February in Williamsburg at the College of William and Mary. It's hilly and scenic -- alot of it on a small untraveled road through woods. One nice thing is that is starts at 1:00 p.m. allowing runners from Northern Virginia to drive down and back in the same day.
The Parks Half Marathon in Rockville (alright Maryland) is also nice. It's a one way route through Rock Creek Park and ends in downtown Bethesda. The organizers give you a metro card at the end so you can get back to your car in Rockville. That is in mid-September.
Haven't run the Danville Half Marathon but I was just in Danville last week. If the course is along the paved bike path by the Dan River, it will be very flat.
I'm still trying to figure out why I did so much better at the Charlottesville Half Marathon last month than I did at this one.
There is also the Fleet Week Half Marathon on Naval Base Norfolk. Here are some other ones listed by halfmarathons.net.

A huge second on the Fleet Week (which this year will be called the Naval Station Norfolk Half Marathon). This is an incredibly well organized race.
Also agree on the Shamrock Half. There's also the Dismal Swamp Half, and not VA but close, the OBX Half.
I'm a VB native, I ran the RnR Half last year, and unless I lose a bet or something there's no amount of money you could pay me to run the RnR Half again. It was a miserable humid day, lots of people dropped out (and dropped). Also the race course support, for what you pay for this event, is lacking.
HTH
I heard rumor that they might not have the Naval Station Norfolk Half Marathon this year.

I liked that HM so much that a couple weeks ago I e-mailed the race directors to find out when it would be. They e-mailed back with the name change and a confirmation it would be on October 4th this year. So unless something changed in the last couple of week's it's on!
Great! See you there.

The Rock N Roll Half Marathon in Virginia Beach is the best! Can be a bit warm since it's in September but not hilly. A great run event from start to finish!
I agree with X_39. Shamrock half in March is a great Spring run. I found a beachfront hotel for under $100/night. The dining was $$$, but maybe it was all the Magic Hat IPA! Flat fast and fun, Great after race beach party. A PR for me.
Runhrd1: Gonna be there in Sept for my first RnR half. Spending the week. It should be another blast.
