Hip Pain

Very frustrated.....I was up to 12 miles in my marathon training, and I had to back off because of a nagging pain in my left hip. It seems like it keeps getting worse. I backed off from training and took 1 week off, started back up, pain still there. Then I took 2 weeks off, pain is still bothering me. The marathon that I plan to run is June 17th.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Laura

Re: Hip Pain
The conclusion I jump to is the dreaded IT band. If so, this is a tough injury. My experience with this was cured by a very agressive regimen of ice and prescription anti-inflammatory medication.

Re: Hip Pain
IT Band - Along with a lot of stretching and self massage - Massage the Quads the Hams and the IT band area inbetween with a tennis ball or rolling pin.

But we really need more info as it could be a few other things. Where is the pain specifically? How does it manifest itself.

Re: Hip Pain
Piriformis is a possibility as is a problem with your tensor fascia latae (TFL). The TFL is the "meaty" area you can feel that is between your hip bone and the top of your femur. I've had problems with mine and it can be rough. Best solution I've found is to massage the area by lying on a tennis ball and rolling around on it. I actually graduated from a tennis ball to a lacrosse ball and now to a baseball. The massage works great for the TFL and piriformis (which can actually be related). However, stretching and massage can help you heal, but you probably want to see if you can find the root of the problem. You may need to stretch and strengthen your glutes and hips. If you haven't in the past, I'd also go to a running store or somewhere that can watch you walk/run and do a gait analysis. The Asics 2110 is a fairly supportive shoe and you may need a shoe that allows a little more pronation. From experience, I know for a fact that if I get in too supportive of a shoe I'll start to have hip problems. Good luck!

Re: Hip Pain
I've had the same problem alot over the years. I would blame it on some combination of hips, pelvis, lower back. I spent thousands of dollars at the chiropractor which kind of treated the symptom rather than the problem. I have been going to a Rolfer for the last year and a half, and I am healthier now than I have ever been. My body is aligned properly, and I am able to do more and better mileage at 44 than I did in my twenties.I would highly recommend that you look into finding a rolfer in your area, it has worked like a miracle for me.

Re: Hip Pain
Concrete and flat?

My hip issues have been on the mend since I added stretching, Ibuprofin, self massage and soft surfaces 2x a week and treadmill with minimum 2% incline 2x a week (2-6%) But the source was my IT band. For 3+ months it was always there, but sometimes it would ne shooting pain for 3-4 strides that I would have to stop and stretch for it was bringing tears to my eyes.

Best advice - Get it correctly diagnosed by a sports medicine professional and start treating it.

Good luck.

Thanks for your advise. I'm going to check back with the running store & find out what shoe I need. One store said I needed a neutral shoe & the other one said a stability shoe. What shoes are you currently wearing? How are they working out for you?
Thanks again for your help.....

I currently rotate between the Adidas Supernova Cushion, the Asics Landreth, and the Saucony Trigon Ride. All three are neutral, cushion shoes. However, this doesn't mean any of them would be right for you. It all depends on your foot type and your biomechanics, and only someone who knows what they're doing and can watch you can make a good recommendation.

Re: Hip Pain
Good luck.

Mentioned above but I want to emphasize this; do core stregnth for thighs and hips (stregnth training should always be balanced). Also abs and hami/quads. Be surprised what 2x to 3x per week for a few minutes will do.

Plenty to choose from on the internet

PS May want to rethink the 17-Jun date if your longest run to date is a 12'er
