... grabbed a bag of frozen meatballs, opened it & took some out to put in the coffee grinder.
While training for an event of any distance, what's the strangest thing you've done while low on sleep?
Sara
updated: OK active.com triathletes, are you all getting too much sleep? No ideas, stories for me? Please share.
I fell asleep on the treadmill and went off the back!
Fell asleep on the couch at 7:00 one night, woke up at 7:10 and thought I had been out all night, and was running late for work the next morning. I didn't realize it was 7:10 pm until after I had showered and shaved.
It is a little bit scary when you read about CFS, but the truth is I usually fall asleep before my 5 year old.
I would fall asleep at traffic lights (dangerous). And during meetings at work (just plain embarassing). I mean, that's what OLD people do.

I think the most weird thing happened with me is that i wanted to run my normal 12 miles and after the 4th mile, my mind and legs shut down, got mad at my self and went home angry... but after shower I thought about the advice i left on the side. I took 2 days off to recuperate as much as i can, and retake my training 100% again.
I read and talked with other triahtletes about this subject, and all of
them agreed about SLEEPING & RECOVERY is super important during
training.

Once, when I was a medical student, I woke up at 1:00 am. I was so fried and exhausted that I assumed that all the clocks in the house were wrong, and I had to get up and go into the hospital (which I had to do at 7 am every day, rush hour traffic). I got dressed, jumped in my car, started to drive to work, realized that it was pitch black and there was no traffic, plus the clock in the car also said that it was 1 am. At which moment I realized that it probably was 1 am after all.
During my harder years I was working retail as a cashier at a grocery store. I was so tired that I fell Asleep standing up while checking a customer out. I don't know how long I was out (maybe less than ten seconds) but what woke me up was when she said "I would like paper bags, please". I woke up startled not realizing where I was at and replied "paper bags to do what?"
I've been on the road for 12 days (my hubby was racing in Idaho & we hit Yellowstone on the way back).
I'm so happy to read all your responses, thanks for adding to the conversation.
We had several funny tired stories on our roadtrip. The morning after Ironman Coeur d'Alene we drove back downtown to the Ironman village. My husband was driving. I had to shout "stop that's a red light!" He was remembering being on his bike on that street & while in that memory he thought he was still riding his bike shooting downtown with right-away & traffic support etc. No accidents fortunately.
I used our car keys to try to open the hotel room. I was beeping the keyless entry thing at our hotel room card-key slot, waiting for the room to open... yep tired.
Thanks everyone!

While training I also teach second grade... Up at 5am and home by 4:30pm. Then off to train. After coming home from the grocery store and putting away the groceries I later found the fresh spinach in the freezer and the soda in the hall cupboard. That's my really tired story. ![]()
Between training, work, and getting a new house ready to move into I have had a few moments. The worst one was when I was wanting a snack and decided on some microwave popcorn. I took the package out of the box and put it into the microwave. I was standing there thinking that it was strange that you didn't have to take the plastic wrapper off before putting it in. You can imagine the mess and the fumes.
Ooops! Stinky spinach, that's too bad. Our toddler likes to move stuff around from the fridge to pantry, that can get interesting.
Thanks for sharing,
Sara
Oh my! Well, you don't sound like an OLD person at all. Get some sleep though!
Sara
Yes, that qualifies as a sleepy story... and too bad about the melted popcorn! Yikes.

Three weeks into a rigorous training course in the Army with limited sleep I fell asleep walking during the final 24 mile ruck march. The march was done in the middle of the night. I have no idea how long I was out for but the terrain was significantly different when I finally woke up. Thankfully I had stayed on course on the trail and finished the march within the deadline.
