I always hear about how good yoga is for runners--but I'm never sure which moves to do. I just found out! Check out this cool story:
Yoga Poses for Gym Gains: Treadmill
My gym offers a pilates for runners also, havent tried it, but looks interesting.
I've done a couple sessions at home watching a DVD and dang near feel asleep on the floor.
goals for 2011:
break 19minutes for 5k
break 2:42 for olympic triathlon probably Anthracite olympic
break 3:16 for marathon ( a long shot but it's fun putting yourself out there)
I took a 6 week yoga class and people fell asleep all the time. It should have been called "Intro to Sominex". It didn't benefit me as a runner, though.
I think it all depends on the type of yoga you do. I have practiced ashtanga yoga for several years -- a very active form, no way you can fall asleep during the practice! -- and I think it would be great for runners to develop overall strength and flexibility. I am very new to running but have been doing the first part of the ashtanga series (sun salutations and some standing poses) after running and have found that I don't get any soreness from running, and my hamstrings/hips stay loose. My husband doesn't do this after running and he gets sore! Okay, I know that's not a huge data set...
You might look for ashtanga, vinyasa, or "flow" classes for a practice that complements running.
I bought a WII for my kids and the WII Fit program a liitle later. I love their yoga routines and I don't know how you could fall asleep doing them. They seem to have really helped my ankle strength. I ran a 7:30 mile the other day. I haven't broke 8:00 since the 80's.
My running club is lucky enough to have a yogini as a member. She holds regular classes for runners. A lot of core work and hip openers. (Sorry, don't know the names) You're sore afterwards, but it really helps with IT band problems and achilles issues.
I thought Yoga Journal had an article a month or so back about "cross training." I'll see if I can find a link.

I've alternating yoga with my running has really helped my endurance and I've strained muscles a lot less as well which has been great. I try to do yoga twice a week at least- either at home or sometimes I catch a class which is nice. Also in case anyone is interested- I stumbled across this great line of work out gear (http://expertbrand.com). They have great quality stuff for running, yoga, whatever your exercise of choice is!
