TD Runner

you are aiming at a similar time to myself so would be good to keep up to date with your training/progress

my aim is probably far too ambitious btw. I average 40-45 miles a week and have never raced further than one half marathon I did, but I'm going to go for it!

Age: 32
Marathon: Philadelphia, Richmond, or Rocket City
Goal: 2:30, give or take a couple minutes
Running since: 1992
Previous Marathons: None
Recent Race: 5k in 15:51
Recent mileage: 85-100 mpw
Training Plan: I have a coach, so I just do what I'm told, but I basically work off a multi-pace system.

Everything is pending my ability to get healthy and have a good summer and fall of training. Goal might be a little ambitious for a debut, but I've run in the 52's for ten miles and have a lot more endurance than speed, so I'm just gonna try to run 5:45's as long as I can. I hope to run an early fall half (probably Philadelphia Distance Run), and after that I should have a better idea of what my goal pace should be.

Mainers - cool!

What are your other PRs like? I think I'm more suited to the shorter stuff cause all the calculators say I should have run a heck of a lot faster by now in the marathon but who knows. Maybe you'll see the reverse coorelation, but I will say the marathon has been a different beast for me.

Here's my log if you're interested.

Re: Fall Marathon Training 5-27-06
TD runner. my 5k is 15.45 (road)/15.37 (track) 10k is 32.30 15k 51.24, half (only done one!) 74.29

so i'm definitely more of a speed than endurance guy. am gradually ramping the mileage up and reducing the number of speed workouts though and am hoping this will pay off later in the year!

my training log is offline although i have started posting my weekly training summary in the 'competitive wire' section. i'll keep up to date with yours with interest!

Re: Fall Marathon Training 5-27-06
To keep this thread going, I'd be interested to know what many you of you are doing now (if anything) to train for the fall marathon. Most marathon training schedules cover the 12 to 24 weeks prior to the race, so what are you doing at this point?

I am building mileage and increasing my long weekend runs to 18 miles prior to jumping into my specific marathon training. Since this upcoming marathon is only my second, I am still new at this. However, I already feel a lot more prepared this time around and am no longer intimidated by the distance.

Will be running Marine Corps Marathon on October 29, 2006 and the New Las Vegas Marathon on December 10, 2006

Re: Fall Marathon Training 5-27-06
my marathon isn't actually until December. I am doing a 'grand prix' series of races over the summer with my target race being a 5k at the end of August.

However, I will build mileage gradually over the summer such as building my current long run from 13 ish to 16 ish so that I can transition to the schedules more easily.

I figure once that 5k is out of the way I will start my marathon specific training. That will be sixteen weeks out from the marathon. Coincidentally that is when our baby is due so not the best timing! Plus all this depends whether I can stay injury free too of course!

I can see my weekly mileage topping out at a max of 60. Definitely will be a 'minimalist' approach to my first marathon but we'll see how it goes!

Goal races: 9/06 Fox Cities (WI) 12/06 Las Vegas
Fall Goal - 2:39 - See weight goal
Weight 205 - Goal weight 180 (6'3)
Upcoming race - Grandmas (Goal break 2:45???)
Marathons 6 - last one 2:47
Running since 2003
Real goal - Get as fast as I can by 40
Recent Mileage 90-120 last 9 months

Plan - I steal ideas from everyone and call them my own - Mainly modeled after Daniels, Pfitzinger and Laird - love those 100 mile weeks on one a days.

Its been a weird spring training - So it will be a big ???? at Grandmas - Its all about peaking at the right time!!

Good luck.

Thanks for the encouraging news!
I have to work on the endurance, and the high mileage should help me there.

Re: Fall Marathon Training 5-27-06
In week 1 of Pfitz's plan (18/55). Had a nice 9 mile run at aerobic pace. So far so good. It was raining cats and dogs out today, and I didn't even think about pushing the run back until tomorrow....just enjoyed the rain drops. This is a good sign that I am really eager to train this time around.

Re: Fall Marathon Training 5-27-06
I'm trying to run more days per week in preparation to starting my training program. I have three weeks, end June/beginning July, when I will be hiking in the mountains, and while I imagine this will be good for my cardio system (7-10 hours hiking per day, 1000m+ vertical gains & losses, 30lb pack, etc) I won't be running and expect to have to build up again, quickly, in the three weeks between the end of hiking and the beginning of my program.
So now I try to run a few times a week 7 miles, aerobically, and before the training starts I'll build a "long run" to about 14-15 miles, while keeping 7 miles a couple times a week also. It's going to be a quick milage build, but I hope to be in good shape and be very watchful for shin splints and knee pain.

We have to remember to dig up this thread with our goals after the race, so we can compare and either make excuses why we didn't hit the goal or explain how our effective training helped us meet it!

Goal races: 10/29 Detroit Marathon
Fall Goal: sub 2:35 marathon
Marathons: 2 - last one 2:37
Running since: 1996 (off and on)
Recent Mileage: after running 2:37 at the Glass City Marathon I have been slacking quite a bit, so something like 45-60 mpw.
Plan - I am working on getting my mileage back up to around 70-80 this summer and i will run some shorter races. Then I will work my way up to 90 mpw before the marathon, and hope to average around 75-80 for the training cycle. I will use something similiar to Pfitz's 70 and over training plan.
