I would like information on how most leagues pick the allstar teams. In my town the coaches each recomended their players and the coach that was given the alstar coach position dismissed their players and took most of the members from his team . Is there any rules on this?
You need to obtain a copy of the Bylaws and rules of your league where your son plays. Most leagues have a voting system of some sort whether it be the coaches or the players or a combination of. In many leagues the all star coach is usually given two to four spots to complete the team. Again you need to read your league rules.
I tried that our league president says he doesnt have any
Which league does your son play in? Little League? Pony? Cal Ripken /Babe Ruth? If he is in any of these leagues they are required to have bylaws, rules and procedures. It looks like someone is lying to you. You will need to go over the head of your league to get to the bottom of it.
If your son is in one of those leagues the president is going to have some 'splaining to do.
Little League Bylaws, Local Rules & Ground Rules or http://www.littleleague.org/leagueofficers/Bylaws__Local_Rules___Ground_Rules.htm
For Little League:
Each local Little League Board of directors should adopt its own bylaws, local rules or ground rules (the terms are interchangeable.) This document or documents expire annually at the end of the fiscal year and must be renewed annually. They normally include the local board's procedures for selection of Tournament Teams (All Stars), specific ground rules for various divisions (such as whether or not the 10-run rule will be used), etc.
Because each local Little League board of directors should have authority to change these types of procedures, they require only board consent, without the general membership's approval. No part of the bylaws, local rules or ground rules can conflict with or supercede any Little League rule, regulation or policy.
it is for little league 9 and 10 year olds What happened there are 3 teams two teams sent their 4 best players the coach involved took all the members of his team to fill 10 spots and took 2 of the 4 from the other teams for the rest . I have been involved in little leagues for many year my sons range from 26 to 9 and the players were always nominated from the coaches on each team i never heard of tryouts where the whole of one team were invited and 4 players from the remaining teams. My son is 9 he is considered the best catcher in the league he can also play bases and pitch and was nominated by his coach and the coach of the alstar team didnt even tell him he wasnt on the team he found out in practice by the other kids which i find unaccepyable. I talked to the president he is new and says he doesnt know how they are supposede to be picked. I feel if they were doing tryouts instead of the nominations all three teams should have been able to attend in full force instead of only being able to nominate 4 players. The two teams had a total 0f 4 players from their teams and the remaining were from the allstar coach team
I am also questioning how they pick for the travel teams. My son "tried out" last year for the 8 year olds, but they never took anyone's name down. The whole process seems fixed, it should be based just on tryouts. Every kids should get a chance to tryout, not just get on a team because you happen to be friends with the coach.
Please read my first reply. You need to ask your board members for the rules of your league. They are the only ones that can answer your question.
yes i did our town has no local bylaws and rules i spoke to the district manager and he said they dont have to.He said it ws entirely up to the coach who he wants on the team. he doesnt have to accept the nominated players if he doesnt want to.That is probably why our town doesnt do well in the alstar games because most towns around here take the best 12 players in the league. My son learned a life lesson how things in life arent always fair or right and politics come into play . It is a shame he had to learn this from baseball.Thankyou for your replies.I definitly will start attending the meetings .
That seems to be the way it is they should call it the friends of the coach team. Some towns have rules on picking allstars while others dont. This coach asked for my son to be on the team i work a lot he even told me he would pick my son up if i couldnt get him there. Two days before the tryouts he tried to get me not to put him in saying it would be too hard on me etc i had already arranged my shifts to only work 11 to 7 so i could make it. I can only assume he had some people he needed to impress and needed the spot .My son is considered to be in the top 5 players in the league. He never told my son he wasnt on the team he was going to the practices each day and found out by the other boys on the team he is 9 how do you think he felt that day. That is why i am angry that any child should be treated that way. This coach personally asked my son and my sons coach to have him on the team and told me and my husband he wanted him on the team and them ditched him. I think this is wrong and since the district managers didnt care that children are treated this way they are at fault to for not having standards. They say they are teaching good sportsmanship.I dont agree .
Perhaps you should look at other options when it comes to leagues. Sometimes the best choice is to pull your kid from the league or find him a club team for the summer. In my area I can have have my son in Little League or at one of 5 different Pony Leagues. There is also plenty of year round club ball. Personally I don't care about all stars because I have an older son that went through all the political junk. He is now a starter on the varsity team and most of the kids that had the benefit of daddy ball now sit on the bench.
do you know of any other leagues i tryed the babe ruth they dont have any in our area
Little League has a "recommended" method for choosing the Tournament Team but it is only a recommendation. LL leaves it up to the Local Leaague Board of Directors to decide how to select the players. LL says that leagues should include how they select their Tournament Teams in their Local Rules. Seems like your league did not do that so I "assume" your BOD just said "let the manager decide" who he/she wants on the team.
As for the District Administrator (DA) getting involved, the DA has "no authority" to tell the league how to select the players, as I said above this is totally a Local League decision.
The horse has left the barn for this year so I would suggest that for next year you "make sure" that the Local Rules include the method for selecting you Tournament Team players (and I would NOT suggest it be left totally up to the manager).
I plan on getting more involved next year and attend the meetings. This way i can find out and try to get rules set up so there is fairness evan though my son has been told he will be on the team next year. Baseball is important to him so it is to me. It should be made fair for all kids .If the coach is picking who he wants then they should not go through the sham of nominating players if they are having tryouts then it should be open to all boys who want to tryout.
