Cross-Training Ideas

Anyone else get bored with just running all the time? I love to get out and do other things--especially in the summer. What kinds of cross-training activities do you like to do on your days off from running?
My favorite thing to do in the summer is attend ocean front yoga classes. From May to September, my studio does 2x/week classes at the beach in the mornings. Then I like to cool down by jumping in the ocean. Great way to start the day.
Not sure if you are familiar with Beachbody DVD's. I'm currently doing Chalean Extreme. Best of all, its indoors and any day of the year.

Spicegeek - Kettlebells are awesome!
If you're looking for a way to increase aerobic fitness while doing something different, try cycling or pool running. If you've never ridden a road bike with cycling shoes that clip-in, I highly recommend it. The speed is incredible. Pool running can get boring, but if you're in an outdoor pool it's not too bad. Just make sure your form is correct.
My other favorites: hiking, ocean swimming, bikram yoga (heat yoga).
Cheers, - Jason.
Well, I can't say I get bored running. I wish I could do it more but I've been using the p90X videos as cross training sometimes. There's plenty of variety in them.
Ocean front yoga classes - you're killing me! That sounds so awesome! I live in the Central Valley of California and it's been in the 100's the whole past week! UGH.
My problem is that I don't want to cross train, all I want to do is run even though I know I SHOULD be cross training. I do lift light weights and do ab crunches five mornings a week (alternating arms and chest every other day), so I get a little cross training in. And on Sundays we do four mile walks with our dog, sometimes just a tiny bit of really easy running mixed in. I don't belong to a gym and it's not in our budget right now. I do have a pool but it's not big enough for lap swimming. I have some Pilates DVDs that I enjoy but get bored with. I guess I could try pool running or if anyone knows any other pool exercises that can be done in a backyard-sized pool that would be something to try out.
aj01 - thinking about doing P90x someday, but as of now, I'm intimidated by it, it looks so intense. So I stepped down to CE.
I started doing race walking in February. Now I've joined a Mountain Bike Club & I'm riding mountain bike trails with this group.
I am absolutely NOT bored with running but am injured so I've been biking as my cross training. I'm biking about 12 to 15 miles a day but bike very intensely since it's not bothering my injured hamstring. I did try just to walk yesterday and walked 6 1/2 miles but still didn't feel "worked out" after that so hopped on the bike for another 5 miles and felt better. I think after the injury heals that I will keep up the biking at least once a week. maybe I'll even do it twice....I miss running so much honestly and can't wait to be able to run again...hopefully next saturday (it will be 2 weeks post injury then).

TRUST THE TRAINING!
Thanks for the great ideas everyone. I LOVE the thought of ocean-side yoga! Ocean swimming on the other hand scares me. I've been intrigued by the P90X videos but I'm turned off at the thought of working out in front of the tv. My sister just got the videos though so I will see what she has to say about them.
I went canoeing this weekend which turned out to be such a fun way to spend the day outdoors. It's not exactly a cross-training workout as I probably didn't burn enough calories to offset the beer consumed but it was a something different and super fun!
I have added biking into my summer workouts. I am running 16-20 miles per week and a 20 mile ride on Saturday. It is interesting how your legs work out differently on a bike.

From my Day 1 experience, I highly recommend for runners.
Right now, I am doing P90X. I start Insanity in 3 weeks.
I would love to hear what you think about the two. Keep us posted on which one you like better and why!
