Pet Peeves while running?

Personally I have two: one is drivers not yielding to people (specifically me while running) in the crosswalk, the other is people out mowing their lawns (not really their fault, but temporarily annoying, especially if you are hitting a point in your run where breathing is more laboured).

Re: Pet Peeves while running?

I have to agree on the drivers.

When I worked at Fort Rucker, AL...running on post was great. The speed limit is strictly enforced there on base and most people there are runners themselves so I never had to worry about getting run over. When I ran off base, it was a completely different story. Enterprise, AL is where I actually lived and it is a pretty rural area. No one is a runner out there. The majority of people there are very overweight and their workout for the day is walking to and from their vehicle. I lost count of how many times I almost got slammed by a car or truck!

Another pet peeve of mine is people smoking near me...especially when I'm running. The good thing is that I'm, well, running. It's just annoying, even more so if you're at a park or something.

Re: Pet Peeves while running?

I'm within my first year of running. I prefer to run without gadgets to take in all that I can. Especially, being cautious and careful of drivers. I have found that the vast majority of drivers are extremely courteous and also encouraging of my running efforts. However, it's the people on cell phones that are less attentive to their task at hand (driving). I'm sad to say that female drivers are less willing to yield to me running. Possibly, women in general, may be less likely to go "out of the box", in not hugging the curb... I don't know... but these are my personal observations. I acknowledge when a driver is courteous with a friendly hand-wave. Additionally, when I approach from the rear of another runner, biker, walker - I verbally say, "coming up on the right" (or similar). I do this so I don't startle them. However, most runners are plugged in... I wish more runners, etc. would announce their approaching as well, should I need to move over for their passing as the sidewalks are only so big...~SandyZI

Re: Pet Peeves while running?

1. Idiots with mullets that shout "Run, Faarrrr-ust, Run!" or ask "Hey buddy, whar's the far?" - I live in a small town in rural Alabama and this is way too common.

2. Smoking course workers - I am very tolerant of other runners, especially at large, crowded races, as I remember it wasn't very long ago that I was the newbie out there unknowingly breaking all the rules of running etiquette. However, I absolutely hate it when you are approaching an intersection and have to run through a cloud of smoke because the policeman or city worker that is directing traffic felt the need to light one up.

3. The competitive runners that finish the race and then turn and run back up the course in reverse to let everyone else know how far ahead of you they finished and that they are now 2 miles into their training run because the race wasn't long/intense enough for them. I may just be ignorant and this is something that elite/competitive runners are supposed to do or something, but it drives me nuts. It probably bothers me so much because I am just jealous. ;-p

4. Dead things in the road.

Re: Pet Peeves while running?

People walking side-by-side (or right down the middle if alone) taking up the entire path/sidewalk who are oblivious to others around them that might be using the path as well. These people typically also have a dog on one of those retractable leashes that is wandering 10 yards away and never fails to run at me after I have veered into the grass to pass the owners.

Re: Pet Peeves while running?

It has to be those people who are blocking the sidewalk coming towards you (walking) who are clearly not working hard at all. They are gossiping about who knows what and CLEARLY see you coming towards them but for some reason feel that they do not need to go single file and continue to block the path forcing you to run on the grass/gravel/road etc! I definitely do my best to stay as far over on my side as possible while passing someone, but when they do that I sometimes getting a little stiff in the shoulder area and refuse to run off the path since they have no consideration for others. If they get a little nudge that's too bad, maybe they'll move for the next runner.

Dogs in general but especially dogs not on leashes!!! I hate when I'm running by a house and a dog comes out and starts barking like he's gonna tear me up.

People who walk on the wrong side of the path/sidewalk and then won't get out of my way.

Re: Pet Peeves while running?

Totally agree with the observations, here are mine:

 1. Drivers not yielding, generally they are courteous but the ones who are in some sort of rush or talking on the cell phone are the worse.Almost got hit few times

 2. Leashed dogs wandering multiple feet away from the owner. There is this unleashed dog inside a fence in my running route, always runs & barks at me along the fence. How I hate that. Once there was a unleashed dog wandering in the running way and when I asked the lady to leash him, she shouted back at hime .... crazy oldie!

 3. Sometimes multiple walkers chatting/walking and not willing to yield the way.

 4. In marathons, water station staff almost bumping into you as if they will stuff the water/gatorade into you.

Re: Pet Peeves while running?

ALL of he drunk, retarded rednecks who feel the need to screech like little girls who have wet their pants, honk their horns and even swerve. Just as much the cops who are hanging out, in bunches, at the local conveinace store instead of getting the aforementioned idiots off the road. Beaufort/Port Royal, SC can be a horrible place to run.

You would think a town with two USMC bases would be runner-friendly yet many of the fools-on-stools that harass runners are Marines (My wife and myself are former Marines). It's sad really...
