Great week! 103 for the week.

I ran my first 20 miler of this season yesterday and it went great! I posted about it in the Run Report section but I'm really pleased with the effort so I'll post again.

My training buddy and I headed out at 6AM to get 13 in before our club's 7:30 group run. We shouldn't have had any problem getting back in time but just before the 7 mile mark is a draw bridge which went up. This cost us about 5 minutes. We hit picked it up a little after standing at the bridge and hit the 8 mile in 6:03. The only problem was that it was 7:01AM at that point so we had under 30 minutes to go 5 miles!

I said, "Should we go for it?" He said (he's Scottish), "Bloody **** of course we should!"

We threw down a 27:32 for the next 5 miles and I wasn't even taxed! All the miles are showing up now, I love it. The last 7 were easy and I felt strong at the end.

105 days til NYC!

I hope everyone else is having a good training cycle as well!

A good week for me as well, as I started to throw in a bit of tempo work.

I usually get in a 3 mile easy jog every morning, and do the main workout of the day in the evening, but this week it was too hot, so I did all my runs early in the morning, before work.

M 9 Aer. w/ a few at 6:35
Tu 13 (7:00)
W 9 with 4.5 tempo (2.5 at 5:45, 1.5 at 5:50, 800m in 2:50)
Th 14 Aer. (6:50) (was going to go 16, but the treadmill malfunctioned)
Fr 9 with 4.5 tempo (4 at 6:00 - 800m in 2:47)
Sa 20 (7:05)
Su 10 easy

For 84 total miles, all in singles.

The reason I'm running Chicago is that I live within a 10 minute jog of the starting line! I also hear the crowds are supposed to be pretty awesome.

31 miles this week. Still building steady slow mileage. HR avg 145 with avg pace of 8:31. Did a Maffetone test on Sat and averaged 8:14 for 5 miles. Southern Man you can take me out of the Richmond. I am going to run the Marine Corps with a Charity Partner (operation second chance). My goal is 3:30 now but I just want to complete it and enjoy it not only for it being my first marathon but also for the guys who are going to benefit from the charity. I have seen some guys over here hurt and I think they will benefit from this charity. By the way, I come home this week. I may run Charlotte if everything works out. Thanks a bunch. LINK

TD Runner I have a Maffetone HR (180-age) of 150. The test is 3-5 miles not exceeding 150. Times always increase. My mile times were 8:04 8:03 813 8:23 and 8:25. AVG 8:14. Should be done on a track but I do not have one. Helps me stay injury free and I enjoy the low HR stuff. I am new to running (mid May) and I was way too aggressive during the first month. I am convinced this Maffetone training is right for me. LINK

Thanks! I was actually debating running NYC this year, since I qualified for guaranteed entree with a HM earlier this year. I think I'll put it off until later though.

By the way, I'm wondering if anybody has done any running in Santa Fe, NM, and can point me towards a good place to do some hill work/long runs What I'm looking for in hills is basically a 200m incline which flattens out at the bottom (hopefully all grass, but I know this is a bit scarce in NM).

I'm traveling there for next week for work related stuff.

What's the theory behind this? Just a way to say keep your HR under 75% of max on most runs?

Will 8:14 dictate pace in other runs or in races?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn.

11th week of 24

This week, I continued my vacation in Maine, but I was back home by Thursday night. I chose to run Mystic Country Marathon (just signed up yesterday) for a few reasons. It's fairly close to home, it's mostly flat, and the timing's right for qualifying for Boston in 2007 and 2008. It's also a smaller race in a scenic area. Finally, it's part of the CT Distance Challenge - age group awards for the combined times in the Fairfield Half Marathon (6/25/06), New Haven Road Race (20K) (9/4/06), and Mystic Country Marathon (10/22/06).

Mo - I'm taking "credit" for 11 miles, even though it was hiking rather than running. In Baxter State Park, Maine, I hiked up to Baxter Peak and back down (about 5000 feet elevation change and 5.5 miles each way)

Tu - Threshold (Houlton, ME) - 10 miles including 5 miles warmup and 5 miles at half marathon pace (planned to go 6:50 for the fast miles but ended up much slower) m6 - 7:21, m7 - 7:58, m8 - 7:24, m9 - 7:05, m10 - 7:21. I guessed I may have been quite tired out by Monday's hike.

We - Med Long (Frye Island, ME) - 14 miles @ 8:24

Th - Recovery AM (Frye Island, ME) 7 miles @ 9:50
PM (home) 3 miles @ 8:41

Fr - Med Long (home) 13.2 miles @ 8:38

Sa - Gen Aer + Speed
AM - 5.6 miles including 4.8 mile race @ 6:31
PM - 3 miles including 10x100m strides

Su - Long Run 20 miles @ 8:40 (hilly, perfect weather - not humid, not hot)

total mileage - 86.8 miles
avg weight - 188 lbs

I chose Akron because I wanted a small-to-medium-sized, early-fall race.

training: not such a great week this time. Started doing more strength stuff (hills/MP), and my legs are feeling it.

Su: 18mi (8:30), solo, tried for MP every 6th mile, almost made it
M: 8mi (9:43)
T: 13mi (9:04) 1st 9 avg 9:xx, last 4 avg 8:15
W: 8.45mi incl 8x400m hill repeats, 400m jog recovery, 6min(?) pace
R: 9.55mi (9:20)
F: 6mi (9:29), legs felt the hills from 2 days before
Sa: 14 mi incl 5@6:56 avg, which would be great but I was supposed to do 10, not 5. went out too fast, tired after 5 miles, did the last 4 easy/hard.

total: 77 miles

here's to next week.

TD Runner. I am new to all this: running and posting. I don't know how to copy what you wrote or post a link but below is the link I used. To answer your question, your pace should be an estimate for what you will run in races. There is a lengthy thread I believe in Basic Training I have looked at and a FAQ from some guy who is an ultra guy. Sorry, I don't know the theory but I have seen improvement. Any advise?

Thanks for the link. Basically, it is base building phase of training. I'm a huge believer in volume and I think that is what is giving you your results.

My only advice is to be very cautious of taking the advice of ultra runners. They tend to be evangelics who try to suck you into their cult I'm biased though - LOL.
