Is there some other way to replenish electrolytes besides gatorade/powerade? I was looking on the ingredients the other day and saw high fructose corn syrup...and I'm thinking what's the point of working out if you're just gonna drink junk right afterwards?
Currently training for:
Electric City Gobbler 5k 11/25/20
Kiawah Island Half-Marathon 12/11/10
Shamrock Marathon 3/20/11
Hammer Nutrition makes HEED which will replenish and doesn't have "bad" aka refined sugars. I'm sure there are other's out there but Hammer sponsors lots of the ultra marathons I've done and I've used it when my body was under lots of stress and I could feel it work. It's nice and light tasting and it is still ok when it turns warm
While refined sugars are generally to be avoided, they do have tremendous benefits for athletes. Refined sugars are quickly digested and replenish energy stores used during exercise. Refined sugars(carbohydrates) are converted to glucose by the liver, the same as complex carbohydrates.Refined sugars are just digested/converted faster. Glucose is carried by the blood to the muscles and stored as glycogen. After exercise and depletion of glycogen in the muscles, quickly replenishing it speeds recovery.
Drinks like Gatorade have been formulated to quickly replenish energy, hydration levels, and electrolytes. They work, and there is no harm in an athlete consuming high fructose corn syrup this way.

Hi there - I'd suggest Shaklee's Performance Sports Mix Drink. It's tasty and you don't have to worry about the added junk. My fav' is lemon lime - I add it to my water bottle, give it a shake and call it good. See attached to read label. see: www.shaklee.net/baker-vandyken if you're interested in ordering. Hope this helps!
Refined sugars are way off base. This is oversimplistic answer is ridiculous, you need complex carbs just you would intake before a run.
Personally I like Powergels as ok, I especially like Carbboom too. But really like Hammer products as well as Carbboom.
Hammer Gels and HEED do well for most. Hammer guys are exceptional, ultra distance athletes as well as cutting edge formulators.
