Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Aug 2nd

Wednesday is DAY OFF.  I enjoy the fact that I can sleep in (have to run early in the summer months) and I appreciate the fact that I will run better tomorrow after a rest day.  But I am already a little antsy for "long run day" tomorrow.

Someone just posted this question on another thread:  "Is marathon training really that different from 5K training?"  This is coming from someone who is doing C25K and wants to jump ahead and get on with the marathon.  Geez, I'll let her know when I finish HALF marathon training!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Aug 2nd

    Howdy!

This morning I DROVE (mercy!) to the Nature Conservancy Beaver River Preserve Trailhead rather than bike.  I know, I know.  But I am mountain biking tomorrow night so should have all my miles in for the week on that by Saturday.

Anyhow, it was AWESOME. I am totally hooked on trail running.  It was overcast, 85% very very humid, buggy, spiderwebby, muddy, slippery, and technically challenging.  I only got around the 1 mile trail twice but DANG I got a good workout.  It was really gratifying.  And beautiful.  And rocky rutty ankle twisty.  I did have to walk to climb the boulders section and I walked over the little wooden bridgelets.  When I do the Springmaid Splash in 2 weeks they have you run right through the water.  Well, I didn't do that yet and so be it.  My new trail running shoes have yet to get (too) wet.

So that is 2.25 miles on trail for me today.  Tomorrow I'll do weights in the a.m., mountain bike with the local trail riders' group in the p.m., ride on the road on Friday, run Saturday afternoon.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Aug 2nd

Hello all.  6 miles again this am but the humidity is back. Plan has a 7 mile run for tomorrow which will be my longest weekday run.  I'll need to get out of the house by 4:30 to be able to finish and do adequate stretches (which I will do no matter what..my hammy thanks me every time I do).  I'm a little anxious about that 7 miles..don't know why since I've run longer than that distance before...this preparation is really very psychologically as well as physically challenging.

Joe - Hope you're feeling better soon...I hopefully will take a lesson from you next time and will listen to my body before I'm out for 3 weeks.

Spice - hate to admit it but Sunday was actually kind of fun once you got past the being wet part...although the wetness made my feet slip in my shoes for some reason and now I've got a toenail that's going to come off (after it just finally grew back in).  That will be my momento of the great monsoon!

Miss Wendy - I hear you on the school thing.  I usually love the kids being home in July and in August I'm like get out of my way...they get bored and call me all day long from home to my job...even though they are 16 and 12.

3hungryelks- what do you think caused your feet being sore?  Hope they feel better.

    Meg - 9 Coasters? Wow...I'd be puking for sure....sounds like a blast.

Navbtcret - I hear you on the diffuculty with the run.  Humidity really takes a lot out of me.  I drink G2 though instead of water when the humidity is high and it seems to help.

Anj - welcome and wow on your multiple training....you rock!

Sheila - funny list...I bet we all could add a few to that.

Marykb - hows the training going....did you sign up officially yet?

xcmom - hear you about the darkness.  It was dark at 4:45 today and found myself with a few deer to deal with.  a few months ago (in the spring) when it was also dark at the same time I found myself face to face with what I thought was a cat...well guess what...it wasn't.  I was able to make a very wide circle around the fella and no harm was done...I think I surprised him as much as he surprised me.

    AHHHHH.....the wonders of notepad.....hope I caught myself up a little now....until tomorrow!

    Cyndi

Quick update:  I lied!  It was NOT dry out at all -- but very humid.  And, the trail run was a mistake...swarms of flies (I forget which "fly of the month" is in season at the moment...) -- nasty!  I guess compared to Anj, I'm a wimp...  But, we did get our run in!

Joe:  funny you should mention "hungry" as an excuse.  I often find that I'm hungry and I don't want to go running on a full stomach...guess I could just have a little snack to hold me over, or a protein shake...

    OK, back to work,

You're not a wimp!  The bugs bug me, too, but since there is nothing I can do about them, I just let them climb aboard for the run and try not to think about it.  I bet if my husband had been with me, I would have been screeching and whining.

Why is it that when I ride with him, I whine more? Thankfully, he doesn't run, so I must run alone.  And then I can't whine.

After driving home, there was an inchworm climbing up my leg! Ew!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Aug 2nd

I guess the unifying thread on the board is the difficulty running in the heat.  I don't feel that badly now.  Yesterday I was scheduled for a 3.5 mile run...I ended up running 3.32 at 11 mm.  I walked some of it.  Weather reports had the humiture (which is how it actually feels) at 106 yesterday and today.  Today I ran 2 miles at 9:23 mm which is a good bit faster than I have been running in this heat.  I was scheduled for a 35 min tempo run, that was about as tempo as I was getting today.  I walked the last mile and 1/2 to the park where my husband and daughter were playing tennis.  My back and leg are doing better.  I only have a dull ache.  I saw the chirpractor again today.

I plan to just keep plugging along in this heat...I am sure it wil pay off.  I have to run 7 miles on Saturday, I guess I will have to start around 6.  I so do not like running in the mornings:)

    Have fun out there

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Aug 2nd

    Hi all,

Thanks for all the awesome advice! I've put together a decent plan to fit my schedule using all the recommended training schedules. I'm going to be running about 3-4 days a week starting with 13 miles a week and working my way up in the 16 weeks I have until the Philadelphia HM on Nov. 22nd.

I tried out my new Asics Gel Cumulus 11's yesterday for a 3 mile morning run at 5 a.m. and all I can say is WOW. I mean, it was like running on air! Now I see why the perfect shoe really does make a difference.

    My new shoes

I also tried an amphipod handheld water bottle and I really like it. I probably will only use it for longer runs, but taking into consideration the recent heat and humidity, I may just bring it all the time to be safe. I don't want to be passing out on any trail runs! It's pretty nice because I used to always carry my iPod and now that I don't use that anymore I don't mind carrying a bottle and switching hands every once and awhile. Plus it has a sweet zipper case thing to hold a key and money.

I think I'm going out now for a 4 miler (though in this heat I may cut it to 3). I have a long run of 6 planned for Friday morning as well.

Thanks again and good luck in the heat!

    -Danielle

Hi everybody! Sorry I've been awol for the past couple of weeks - have been having a bad time of it of late (not running - life).

Ran my half marathon this past Sunday and did much, much better than I'd anticipated - I actually finished at a pretty good pace and time. It was a lot of fun, too - now I really regret not signing up for the full marathon here in October, because I know I could do it. I guess there's always next year, right?

Hope everyone is well. I'll try and come back sometime soon - you guys have been a great support network and are all terrific people. Thank you for everything.

Good afternoon all. I went for a 4.5 mile faster paced run this afternoon. It went pretty good. I also worked out my back, biceps and abs today. I think I will sign up for the half  in Pittsburgh also. If I am feeling a little off I can always run a little slower. I'll wait to see how my long run goes this Saturday though, I am planning on 13 miles if that goes well then I will sign uo for sure.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of Aug 2nd

tough workout today - 14 x  1/4 mile sprints I`ve been running them at 8.5 mph but today I backed it off to 8 mph - just wasn`t feeling it - I`m entering a step down week and I really feel I need it - 10 mile long run - moving it to Friday so I can go to the beach with my eye candy Sunday and play kettlebells - back off to 6 repeats and the NYC half is next sunday so the back off week was well timed.

tomorrow I have a training session and x training - I`ll bike and row I think - maybe I`ll do abs - see how energized I am !!

navbtcret - I don`t see much of a problem with your 3 halfs - - make sure to take a good recovery week after each as you are racing so soon after  the third might be hard but I think it would a good experience - someone else signed up for Pittsburgh too I think !

Megan I`m not sure roller coaster riding counts as cross training !! your local tri sounds fun !

elks spice abs .. lol !!thats too funny !! I have to say I`m feeling some positive effects of my twice a week ab days not to mention I really think my 6 pack is beginning to show tho !

Sue enjoy your visit to NYC ! I`m on the east side from where you are - 90th street - but if you want to get together for a kettlebell workout let me know ;0)

Joe I did put some kettlebell videos up on youtube ! good workout today !

Anj I`m such a city chick - trail make my legs sore !! -

cyndi I have weirdness about 7 miles too - it seems so much further than 6 - I agree Sunday was kinda fun once I got over being a drowned rat ! it was nice and quiet which I enjoyed !! it was also fun seeing the other odd really dedicated runners out there -it made me feel good

Lorie my guess it`s the combination of the heat and the training piling up making the 5 seem tough

Jill Rock it out this weekend !!

The results from the Adventure race are finally available. I managed to run the half in 2 hours and 1 minute. lol Not quite under the two hours I was hoping for but considering the hilly course I very pleased with the time. Plus it was my first ever half marathon. Our team finished everything in 9 hours and 42 minutes. We came in 32nd place out of the 40 teams that were in the division we were in. The were 107 teams overall some were just in different divisions.
