Welcome to the ride JSM

Just 2 weeks to go for the first Fall runners. Hope you are enjoying your tapers!

As for me well I'm officially calling myself a Marathon trainer now. Just ran my longest ever week (56 miles) including my longest ever run (2 hours 5 minutes)

Other runs included 6*800 with 90 seconds recovery in 2:27 average, a 3.75m tempo run in 20:50 and a 12 mile run into work at 6.50 pace. Rest was very easy running

This coming week is a cutback week for me as I have a big 5k race next Saturday. Turns out it was a good week to pick as an easy week as my wife is being induced tomorrow and baby number two will arrive. How this will impact on my training in the coming weeks will be interesting!

Keep up the good work everybody!

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
Thanks for stepping up mainers. Also congrats on becoming an official "marathon trainer" .

My week was great 100 exactly. Plus a tempo/race on Tuesday. My training partner and I did a CC workout on that night. 2 mile tempo then raced a 3.3 mile CC race.

We ran the course then threw on flats and ran a 2 mile tempo (5:10/5:18). We jogged to the start line threw on our spikes and jumped in the race. We agreed to take the first mile steady, but my training partner has a strange idea of steady (4:48 through the mile). I was just behind him and he said, "Oops, sorry dude, we'll cruise the next mile." We both felt powerful though and kind of laughed about it. He hit the 2 mile in 10:11 and I was just behind him in 10:18. I felt great.

He jammed at that point. It was weird, all of a sudden I realized I had become a spectator and was more in awe of his performance than focusing on my own workout. He finished in 16:14 and I finished in 17:17. I'm getting there and I can't wait to race on 9/2.

I hope everyone had a great week and has a great week coming up.

Yeah! I felt so good this week. 9/2 is a 15K that I ran as a prep for Chicago. It is my first real fitness test since doing all the big mileage so I'm psyched.

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
Hey Mainers, could you also put me down for these additional marathons?:

September 17: Adirondack Marathon, 3:45.
October 8: Mohawk Hudson River Marathon, 3:34.

Adirondack will be a good hilly training run and Hudson Mohawk will either be a trainer or a BQ attempt depending on the weather and how I feel.

Thanks!

I'm doing my first 20 miler of the season today (staring out the window hoping the rain will slow down) and will have a total of five in my quiver (including 'Dack and Mohawk) by the time Philly comes around.

Miracle Miles? I'll be there too, with a training partner or two from this side of the state.

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
My week could have gone better:

Su: 22mi (8:23), hottest ever, running from waterstop to waterstop by the end of it
M: 8mi (9:52)
T: 12mi incl 5x1200 on the road w/~.36mi jogging recoveries. 4:37 avg for the repeats
W: 8.65mi (9:25)
R: 10.35mi incl 10x100m strides
F: 10.15mi (9:40)
Sa: 17.1mi (7:44), planned last 13 @mp but didn't quite turn out that way

total: 88.2 miles

All very very slow except for the workouts.

Saturday's workout included 5 wu, 8 a little slower than mp, one last attempt at a decent mile, then 3 miles of hard/easy slop. It was truly the worst workout in quite a while. Then this morning I was somehow able to put together 3 mp miles in what was supposed to be an easy 13-miler, go figure.

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
Thanks mainers. Congrats on the good training and on baby number 2 on the way! What a wonderful time!!

Sounds like a great race TD - glad you are back in full force!

I am continuing my comeback and had a great week.

M - Rest
T - 4.25 (9:20 pace)
W - 8.3 miles, incorporated fartleks at 5K pace in the middle
R - 4.25 (8:41 pace - the rain sped me up some
F- Rest
Sa - 9.3 (8:51 pace - went out slow and finished with a strong 4 miles)
Su - 18 (first 9 at 8:19; last 9 at 8:41).

Total: 44.1

I am getting a little worried about my marathon though - it is all on a trail and I'm afraid it will be painfully boring!! Have any of you done small trail runs?

Edited because my math skills stink!

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
If this is where to check in, put me down for NYC, 2:50.

Did my first 20 miler in over 20 years yesterday, multiple loops of a trail course. Although I was dead for the last loop, I actually picked it up and the final 1.7 loop around a lake was at 6:40 pace, although it felt like I was crawlilng. Paid the price today, when, in higher humidity than I expected (I'm in suburban NYC), legs felt dead and stopped about a mile short, and it was a miracle to get that far.

Weekly mileage of about 50. I'm also doing Reach-the-Beach in a few weeks. My quality workouts are long runs and tempo runs (and sometimes long runs with tempo runs).

That's the one! Have you run it before? I think we'll have 10-12 running it.

We'll have to introduce ourselves to each other! I'll be wearing a red nike singlet with a running conquistador on it (see www.ancientcityrr.org[/URL" target="_blank"> for the logo). I also have a picture in my profile.

Never run it before, and I've heard it's beastly hot. I'll be way way way behind you. Hope you're still hanging out at the finish by the time I get in :-)

I'm not sure what I'll be wearing, but I'll be one of the girls with shorts on. I'll look for you and say hi.

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
Pretty good week here, a little light on the work but made up for it today:
M - AM, 6 easy 6:50. PM, 10 easy 6:46; sore from hard weekend.
T - 11.5 easy 6:34.
W - AM, 10 easy 6:38 avg. PM 2 warmup then ~3500m CC "race" 19:46. Did first mile pretty hard then idled back as my legs were still sore on the hills. 1.5 mile cooldown.
R - 8 easy 6:28; lazy and skipped 2nd run.
F - AM, 8 easy 6:32. PM, 12 easy 6:34.
Sa - 12.5 easy 6:26; again lazy and skipped 2nd run.
Su - 22-miler. 4 mile warmup, then 5 miles (5:40), 3min jog, 4 miles (5:30), 3min jog, 3 miles (5:33), 3min jog, 2 miles (5:27), 3min jog, 1 mile (5:32), 1.5 cooldown 6:34. 6:01 overall avg for 2:12:24.
Total for week: 107 miles.

Sunday long run was supposed to be "marathon effort" repeats, would have liked them a touch faster but was pretty happy with my endurance on them. I'm still a few weeks behind on fitness but have committed to Steamtown, so I will have to train through the Crim 10-miler next weekend instead of strongly tapering as planned.

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
This was a cut-back week for me - the last one until the taper in 6 weeks. The early part of the week, even the easy runs, I did at the track to take a bit of a break from the hills on the roads. Wednesday's VO2 max workout felt good, and I was pretty close to my target pace. Today's medium long run suffered - maybe because it was the third day in a row of relatively difficult runs - quads really tightened up on the second half of the run. 9 weeks to go until Mystic!

Mo - AM - 6mi (9:05) PM - 4mi (8:03)
Tu - AM - 6mi (9:17) PM - 4mi (8:05)
We - 5mi w/u, 7x600m intervals (6:02 pace), 1mi c/d
Th - AM - 6mi (9:28) PM - 4mi (8:06)
Fr - 11.2mi (8:45)
Sa - 9mi, inc. 6.7mi race @ 6:29 pace, 10x100m strides
Su - 16mi (9:19 - D'oh!)

Edited To Add:
Total Mileage: 75.7
Avg. Weight: 187 - down 1 lb from last week - it looks like I won't get down to 180 by race day, but I can accept 185.

Re: Fall Marathon Trainers Thread 8/20/06
A very good week for me. The old tibial stress fracture (R) didn't tweak, the bad knee was OK (L), the bad big toe (L) didn't interfere w/stride mechanics, the as-yet-undiagnosed but definitely happening sports hernia (sorta R) continues to fade after the first half-mile of every run, and the hamstrings continue to respond to one Aleve after each of my three longer runs. You youngsters better enjoy your pristine bodies before they force this sort of daily inventory on you. (I'm 48).

Flew home from quick Maine/Boston vacation on Tuesday PM. Ran 50 miles in the next five days, including:

Wed: 18 w/9 @8:15 (HR 169/ 84%)
Fri: 10 w/5 @ 7:43 (HR 174 / 88%)
Sun: 15 w/10 @ 8:02 (HR 171 / 86%)

Since I'm shooting for a 3:30 marathon (8:00 pace), and since it was at least 80 degrees and 70+% humidity for all those faster miles (the HRs are for those miles only), and since my mileage total this week (58) was the highest of the year, I'm feeling pretty good about my marathon, two weeks from today.

I ran 24 miles at marathon pace, more or less, in the last five days.

If the weather gives me any kind of break at all--and it was 61 degrees at the 5 AM start last year and 65 the year before--8:00 pace should feel pretty easy. The taper begins now.

I didn't think the heat was that bad last year. However, some of the people I went with had some rough races because of it.

I'll definitely be chillin at the finish for a while afterwards cuz the group I'm comin down with will be finishing for a bit.
