Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06

Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06

Well, here we go again. The wounded are licking their wounds, picking their next battle.

I'll run this just like Southern Man did for the fall. Post your goal race, location, date, and goal time; I'll compile these into the list. PLEASE POST CHANGES/UPDATES IN ALL CAPS SO I CAN EASILY SEE TO MAKE CHANGES.
_____________________________
I have not yet picked a goal race for spring. I'm looking for a flat, fast course, but for some reason it seems most of them are held in the fall. It appears I must pick a race in the March/April timeframe.

Training will go something like this:
Oct- Recover, rejuvinate. I've been pretty flat lately so I think the endocrine system needs a recharge.
Nov- Get back into training, base mileage ramp-up.
Dec- Back to full volume, VO2max training by mid-month.
Jan- 100-120mpw, VO2max and fast work transitioning to more MP-specific work towards the end.
Feb- MP-specific work at full volume; indoor track, sub-15 5K?
Mar- Fast long runs, long tempos, then taper
late Mar-Apr - race

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06
Thanks for getting this started, Andy. I have 2 spring marathons planned:

Disney 1/7/07 - not sure about goal, mainly running this because my training partners asked me to. This could be a long training run or an attempt at a PR, but I'm not sure yet.

Bank of America (Tampa) 2/?/07 - haven't registered for this yet, and it depends on what happens at Disney. It's in my hometown, so the convenience factor can't be beat.

Sorry to be so vague, but I'll update when I get hold of my goals.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06
Haven't really confirmed my race yet but tentatively,

Vancouver Int'l marathon- May 6 2007
Vancouver, BC
Goal time: 2:50-2:55

This will be my 2nd marathon to date...though I'm still debating whether or not continue to work on bringing down my 10k time some more (I'm planning for a 10k 2 weeks out). Of course it would be absurd to peak optimally for both...
Currently in base training mode and for the next few months till January; mileage buildup to 85-90 mpw before transitioning in to race-specific work sometime in late January.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06
Hi all . I'll join in if I may.

My race is Connemara International on 1 April.
It will be my second marathon, my first was Dublin in 3.21.
I am building base for the last couple of months and will start the 5 month CR inter programme shortly. I did my first using Hal Hig Beg and there wasn't enough mileage I think.

Connemara is supposed to be really (REALLY) hilly - even worse than Boston, so my target is just to beat my Dublin time with a stretch goal of 3.10.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06
While I am a triathlete most of the year I always like to run a late winter early spring marathon. This coming year there will be 2. (And if you count IM's - 4).
I am going to try to pace my wife to a BQ at Myrtle Beach in Feb. and I am running Boston (qualified at MB last year). But first I have to finish IM Florida in 3 weeks. I quess that counts as a fall marathon and we just finished IM Germany in July, thats a summer marathon. So I guess I will have run a marathon in all four seasons. Can't wait for Boston, I love to run.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06
I believe that I am going to join Timruns at Vancouver on May 6th, 2007.

I will be trying for a BQ: 3:30.

Training will go something like this:

Now to November 12th, training for a HM, 60+ mpw. Not sure if I will be able to run that race as I have a conflicting gig.

November - December, maintain intensity, focus on a race December 30th (New Years Resolution).
Jan 1- May 6th... Pfitzinger/Daniels under 70 mpw plan augmented by some additional miles here and there and an occasional hill repeat workout.

And I'm scared sh!tless. Not afraid to say it.

Hey Griz, that 1:37 half marathon you just ran is a good predictor for a 3:30 marathon. Did you know that in October 2002 I ran a 1:37:26 half and then followed up with a 3:30:15 marathon in Philly for my first BQ? So if this old **** can do it then I know you can do it too. One question fer ya: Are you planning on maintaining 60+MPW all winter? I would think a little bit of down time would be more beneficial rather than trying to maintain that level for over seven months.

Oh yeah, did you notice that I said "my first BQ"? I'm not sure if you knew but I just had a 3 minute PR at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon last Sunday, running 3:27:10. You probably didn't see it because it was in your favorite forum, Boomers and Beyond. This summer and fall my marathon training consisted of several consecutive weeks of 50-55MPW, alternating five days per week on long run weeks and six days per week on non-LR weeks. Speedwork consisted of weekly 4 X 1600's except on weeks when I had a race. Basically, I scaled back from the 60 - 75 MPW range by cutting out junk miles. This gave me the strength to do the intervals fast and run faster long runs progression style. Here's a link to my Mohawk Hudson RR:

As for my spring marathon plans... First, I'll still be going to Philadelphia for the marathon on November 19. After a recovery week this week, it will be back to more of what got me here and I dunno, maybe another PR in Philly! I will definitely do Boston next April and probably complete "the New England double", running the Vermont City Marathon on Memorial Day weekend. I don't want to miss VCM since it's my local race and I have a streak of seven in a row.

Lincoln Marathon (5/07)...2nd marathon
Goal time sub 2:45?

Last week was only 5 miles a day with 1 day on 5min repeats. Long run is 9 miles in the last month. So it's time to get up and go.

Hi all,
Mind if I join? It looks like Boston for me. Crashed and burned last year - 3:55. Goal this year 3:25
July thru Nov 15 - base building mileage
Break for Thanksgiving Holidays
Dec - Pfitz 70 mpw 18 wk program

Steve

ps: brooktrout, I ran the half at Sarasota last year and it was flat except for the causeway.

Thanks for the info - did you like the race? I like Sarasota (esp. the beach area) - so I'm hoping I picked a good'n.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06
brook trout,
I throughly enjoyed the race. Not too large, well organized, the start was a little narrow but just move up towards the front , it opens up. Use the Ringling Museum ( the start ) as a search for a hotel. I found one within walking distance that was reasonable.

Re: Spring Marathon Trainers Thread -- 10/8/06
Hey Grizz,

I'm gonna disagree with Doctor Wu and suggest that you will benefit tremendously from keeping your mileage up throughout the entire winter. Once you've adapted to it, it really isn't bad at all - just be aware of where you are physically throughout the process and know when toisten to your body and know when you need a down week back off the intensity.

As for me, I'm running Boston in April, 2007. It's tough to put a tangible goal time down, because I don't have as much a bead on my fitness as usual. But tentatively, I'll say 2:28. No marathon this fall, as I don't want to take time to taper and recover from it, but a fair number of shorter, speedier races to get comfortable at faster paces.
