first marathon

Thinking about doing a marathon next year. I like the idea of doing a trail marathon since I have less pain in my hip after trail running and really enjoy the scenery better. My friends think that my first marathon should be a large road race since it's more motivating to have all the spectators and pace teams to help you along. Having never done a marathon before (only halfs) does this really make a difference?

Re: first marathon

I think the answer to this question will vary person-to-person and will probably come down to personal preference every time. Some people get energized by the huge crowds of runners and spectators, while I think others could possibly be overwhelmed and distracted. I think they are both to be experienced during a runner's career, but for the first event, do what feels right for you so you have a positive experience and want to return and do another one. Does that help?

Re: first marathon

Toby is right, this is a personal decision. The large road races are generally flatter, and will have lots of support like more water, medical and the ability to probably bail on the run if you get hurt or can't finish. On the trails, you will have less people, probably better secrenary, but less water stops (take your own), less porta-potties (use the local tree) and less medical care and you will probably have to finish as there is no taxi along the way to pick you up. I have done both several times over and like each type for its uniqueness. Enjoy your first marathon. you will love it.
