best pre-race warmup for marathon?

Temperatures are expected to be in the moderate range (50'sF).

I don't want to overdo it. What is the minimum amount of warmup necessary to be ready to start right off at pace (or a few seconds slower)?

Probably there is a wide spectrum of opinion on this question...

A 20-30 minute walk to the start line.

My best race was with a three minute walk from the hotel to the start line, nothing more. Most mortals have a very simple choice: give up seconds in the first mile, or minutes in each of the last few miles.

I got my BQ after doing a light warmup: About 5 minutes light jogging, some stretching, then 5 minutes more jogging, working up to about race pace at the end. I was ready to hit my pace at the gun.

I think the size of the race and the start time are a factor. If it's small and you're getting up early and going, either a brisk walk with stretch or very light jog with stretch.

If it's big and you have a lot of pre race waiting around, I would really skip it. You'll already be moving around the different parts of the start area and the shuffle at the start will be enough.

jogged to the bathrooms at the end of the road and back. touch my toes once. If I don't run the day before due to flying, then I'll walk and jog a little.

Re: best pre-race warmup for marathon?
The day I ran my best marathon time my warmup was running to the bathroom a couple times to vomit. I had some nasty stomach virus that prevented me from eating anything that day or the next, but hey, I PRed in the race. On more normal days I don't do any real warmup before the race. I fear that I would go out too fast if I did a warmup so I use the first mile as a warmup and hope that it will be my slowest mile of the day.
