1st marathon and a question

I originally submitted this in the 'Newbie' forum. Maybe this isn't the correct bin either?

-----------------------------

Hi there. I'm planning on running my first ever marathon in Philadelphia on November 19.

I noticed the following on the web site http://www.philadelphiamarathon.com/exec/philly/home/default.asp :

"The course is sanctioned by USA Track & Field. No bicycles, skateboards, scooters, baby joggers, strollers, headphones, roller skates or blades are permitted on the race course during the marathon, 8K or half marathon. "

Now I've been putting in my long slow distance runs while using an MP3 player. How stringent are these marathon folks about some 9 or 10 minute guy using an MP3 player? Do you think the marathon officials will make me remove it?

I did both the Philadelphia Broad Street Run 10 miles and the Philadelphia Distance run 1/2 marathon and noticed a TON of people using thses devices. Does anyone think I'll have any problems?

Thanks!

It won't be an issue unless you cause an accident or you're in the top 3. Just be careful of other runners.

Re: 1st marathon and a question
You probably could get away with it, but that's really not the point.

You sign the waiver and agree to abide by the race rules, not abide by the rules except for the rules that you don't like.

It's not just the concern that people with headphones don't listen to race instructions and may not hear traffic or announcements on the course, runners with headphones also can and do bother other runners in the race, perhaps without even realizing that they are doing so. That's why headphones are banned in so many large races.

Leave the headphones at home. You don't need the distraction - especially if you are not used to running in the middle of a huge crowd, the other runners don't deserve distracted runners on the course, and you'll be able to enjoy more of the race atmosphere without them, anyway. Enjoy the whole race; take in the whole race atmosphere with all your senses; and leave the headphones for your solo training runs!

Re: 1st marathon and a question
gunkie,

I don't mind you asking this, since it's your first marathon - but please do heed the advice offered here to leave them at home.

That's the rules of "sitting at the big table"
