Wow! That sounds intriguing. I'm amazed you stayed on course while sleeping! I used to sleep-walk as a kid. Thanks for adding your perspective! What are you currently training for?
Sara
It was an odd experience. I was probably saved by the well marked, fairly straight trail.
I'm currently training for a 1/2 Ironman in Sept in Clermont, FL. I've got of sprints planned for the summer but that will be my big race for the year.
How about you? Training for anything special?
Don
Hey,
Thanks for asking - my big focus this year is writing & taking the USA Triathlon Coaching Certification (day 3 is tomorrow a.m. & it's been fabulous.)
Later this fall I'm doing 2 sprint races. My big plan is to "become friends" with my bike & learn how to use it make it work for me. I'm intriqued by exterra/offroad & am thinking of attending my first dirt camp next summer - kindof scared though!
I hope your training goes well! Let us know how race day goes!

Fell asleep in a McDonalds parking lot along side the interstate at 2PM one day (during a long drive). My office called, the HR director asked 'what are you going', to which I answered "sleeping, till you woke me up". At that point I realized I was in the car not in my bed and it was the middle of the day.
When I get solid in my training and the distances start to creep up I cut out all recreational caffeine (pop, some tea, etc...) and restrict myself to caffeine only for long training sessions as a boost.
This leads, always, to falling asleep; in meetings, at my desk in the middle of conversations with co-workers, on the couch before my kids, while reading a story to my daughter, while talking on the phone at home, in the car while in the parking lot.
In prepping for my next race I've cut out caffeine this past week, so far I've been lucky and only crashed out on the couch in the evening and spent the days yawning.

Within the past few years I've started to fall asleep so easily.. and anywhere!
Once at a stop sign (luckily, my foot was heavy enough to hold the break down until the car behind me honked) & I always fall asleep at the movie theatre, even in loud action films! Sometimes my body will jump... SUPER EMBARASSING!
Thanks guys for sharing your stories of exhuastion!! Weird things happen...
Sean, let us know how your race goes.
& HaveMercy, in our family we call that the Twitch. It happens to me the second before I fall asleep & I jerk myself out of sleep with a huge twitch. Then I start laughing & if it really is bedtime I have to try to sleep again!
Sara
Ahh yes ! The 'TWITCH' hah, I always try to play it off like it didnt happen, and I always get caught! I wonder what its caused by, does anyone know?
Yes, it's called the myoclonic jerk. It's the involuntary sudden contractions of the big body muscles while falling asleep. Some say it's because your heart rate and breathing slow down rapidly, and your brain may interpret this as your body dying, so it sends an electrical pulse to your muscles to wake them up again.
One of the many things I learned from watching House.

Went right into the men's room instead of the ladies' after a tough brick session on Friday.
Fortunately discovered my mistake when I found myself staring at a wall full of unfamiliar...urinals.
Terry
Haha! I've done that before, and wasn't I even tired, just on my cell phone and not paying attention. I walked into the men's restroom and all I hear is "wrong bathroom sweetheart!" .. (luckily he seemed intoxicated enough not to really care... & hopefully not remember my face)
I can picture that clearly! Hah!!!
Here's the recent problem I've run into: I'm done with a workout at the club, rushing to pick up kids in the childcare, gathering up all my stuff in the lockerroom and as I rush out, I have to actually look down to be 100% that I'm fully dressed!!!
I think in all the hurry I'm getting a little paranoid... it all started when I found out I'd been swimming with a see-through swimsuit. Full story @ http://ironmakeover.blogspot.com/2009/03/my-swimsuit-was-see-through-things-i.html
