Marathon pace and Maximum heart rate

I just calculated my Max heart rate as 184 bpm.

60% =132 bpm
75%=152 bpm
80%=158 bpm
85%=164 bpm
90%=171 bpm

I have done about 5 weeks of training of 38-45 mi/week with two 20 milers, and about 5-7 15-18 mile long runs. So I am well prepared to cross the finish line.

I hope to run the second half of the marathon 5 seconds faster that the first half and be totally exhausted. With that in mind, at what rate should I run at during the race, where I am just on the (safe) edge of oxygen debt (do we still call it that?)

I tend to run by heart rate rather than speed as a 10 miler at noon in summer is slower than 10 miles on a fall morning, yet I will expend the same amount of energy.

Any help is appreciated.

I have had very little success trying to race marathons with a heart rate monitor so I'll leave the answer to your question to someone else.

However I can say that it's not very useful to "calculate" your maximum heart rate. Rule of thumb calculations are frequently way off. My calculated max is as much 14 beats per minute off from my actual max, depending on the formula I use.

The way to find it is to test it. To try to actually reach it. There are several ways to do this: Hill repeats and such. You of course need to be healthy enough to do this so if you need to ask a doctor for clearance, do so. Some people get a medically administered stress test.
